Title: [Tutorial] The newbie's tutorial for The Reunion Patch
Post by: Veclord on 2005-08-09 09:49:59
After reading the entire thread concerning Reunion's patch, I decided that I should post up a tutorial on how to get it installed. It seems like rocket science but it isn't, and you will find yourself wondering why it was so hard once you get it right. I got it to work, and you can too.

Note: This will only work with a maximum install of FF7 onto your hard drive. The data files needed to modify in order for this patch to operate correctly are normally located on the CD, and must be present on the hard drive in order to continue. I would recommend a full install anyway, since it's only 1 GB and boosts performance even without the patch.

Step 1 - Update your game

The first thing you want to do before starting any of this is to make absolute sure your version of FF7 has been updated to the final release. The patch I'm talking about is the final and official 1.02 patch released by Eidos. People have reported several strange issues and errors after trying to install the Reunion patch, and I believe this has to be one of the main causes. The update fixes several problems with the game and should be downloaded. If you have not updated since purchasing your copy of FF7, do yourself a favor and click here (http://elentor.com/Projetos/FF7-Tools/Patches/riva_TNT.exe). Simply navigate to the directory in which you installed FF7 and replace the files "FF7" and "FF7Config" with the new files you downloaded in the update. After this you're ready to move on to the next step.

Step 2 - "Hacking" the char.lgp file

What we are doing here is replacing blocky images Squaresoft (now referred to as Square-Enix, obviously) inserted into the game with the battle textures you see while in a random battle. To do this, we are going to have to reach the images. If you (hopefully) comprehend how .ZIP files work, then this really shouldn't be all that difficult to understand. The images for this game are not in the formats ".GIF", or ".JPEG" like the average computer operator might assume. In fact, this game reads these images in completely different formats. What Square did with these special types of images after creating them was "compress" them into one large file. This file being called the "char.lgp".

You may notice other "lgp" files by doing some exploring in your FF7 directory. Ignore them for now, what we want is the "char.lgp" that the game uses to store it's images.

Now there may be a question everyone is thinking right now, "BUT VECLORD, HOW DO WE GET 2 TEH IMAGES WITH WINDOZE?". Well very simple: You can't. But is there another way? Why yes. Yes, there is my friend! What do we use to get into the .lgp file then to unpack the images stored within? We do it using this nifty little gadget appropiately named "LGP Tools". This magical tool is designed specifically for ripping open the mysterious char.lgp file and extracting it's images right in front of our naked innocent eyes. We will now proceed to click here (http://elentor.com/Projetos/FF7-Tools/Extracting/lgptools160.zip) in order to download this beautiful, beautiful tool. You should take note that LGP Tools 1.6.0 is the version you're going to want to use for this and is also the very version I have linked to, as people have reported several errors trying to do this with earlier versions.

Step 3 - Retrieving images from the char.lgp file

Now with this tool we'll be able to open that stubborn little .lgp file and rip those files right outta there! For those who are inevitably thinking "what in the hell is the point in doing this?". For one because I said to. Actually, Reunion's patch needs access to the images stored within the .lgp file in order to actually change anything. This is one of the main things that throw people off and cause them to mess up. All the patch installer really does is modify several of the in-game images. It doesn't just spawn them out of nowhere, and you can't send the Reunion installation program hunting all over the char.lgp file. So if we're going to get anywhere, we'll need to do this before we actually install reunions patch.

What you want to do is extract the files to reveal the tool you just downloaded (TGP Tools, that is). Now you want to click on the main executable. The blue comet that someone decided to write the black letters "Fice Dula" on. We double click to find this.

Well, this looks intimidating doesn't it? Well, not really. At least not if you've been married for 12 years. But anyways, what we're going to do now is click on the "Open" button. Another window pops up demanding to know what .lgp file we want to dig into. Inside this white box, you should see 2 files named "char.lgp" and "flevel.lgp". If you do not see these files, you will need to navigate to them. Head on down to your FF7 directory (through THIS little window) and open a folder called "data". Now open one called "field". And thare she blows.

Which one of these two files do we click? We'll double click the char.lgp file, since we could open flevel.lgp if we felt like it, but it would be pretty pointless. And if you don't know why, then you need to start paying attention because this next part must be peformed perfectly. I'm talking spitshine and crum cakes. If not, your char.lgp file may become corrupted at which point we'll need to find our FF7 CD (assuming we didn't download this game off Kazaa, which most of us probably did). Just to be safe, let's back up a couple of files before continuing on. Right click your char.lgp file in Windows and click "Copy". Now in a blank space, click "Paste". There's your backup!

Repeat this for two more .lgp files in your FF7 installation, these two files are named "menu_us.lgp" and "world_us.lgp" The reason why we do this is because the Reunion patch is going to modify these files, and if something goes wrong you won't be able to replace the files the patch modified with the originals. In other words, you'll be f00kt. And for the record, menu_us.lgp is located in the "menu" folder while world_us.lgp is in a folder called "wm".

Now if you're done with that, let's go back to what we were doing. In your "field" folder (the one containing the files char.lgp and flevel.lgp). Create a folder here called "char".

This is going to be the folder we extract the images to. click the "Open" button in the LGP Tools program and open up "char.lgp" (NOT your backup file). Lots of files huh? Click the "Extr. All" button on the right. Now guess where we're going to extract all this cra-I mean stuff. You got it! The "char" folder we made a second ago. Now we'll need to wait a second because this can take a minute.

Step 4 - Installing the Reunion patch

Done extracting? Good! Now we're going to download the latest version of Reunion's field patch by clicking here (http://venus.walagata.com/w/reunion/The_Reunion_Patch.rar). We will now unzip the files inside, and run the installer. Getting excited? Well don't go into detail! Now this patch we've ran is going to....DELETE OUR COMPUTER. Actually, it's going to update the files we dug from the char.lgp file. No, really.

We don't need to do anything fancy with the Reunion installer. As long as it's pointing to the "data" folder in your FF7 directory it doesn't matter. After you do this, go back and delete your "char.lpg" file. MAKE SURE you have backed it up before doing so. If possible, I'd like not to be wrestled to the ground and have my family's life threatened because someone thought it was a good idea to delete their game's textures without backing them up.

Step 5 - Repacking the updated files into a new .lgp file

Now here comes the hard part. We're going to use the program that's stuck with us all the way to the end, LGP Tools, to take all the work we've done in the "char" folder and recompile it all into our very own .lgp file. Yes, we can do it! Take a deep breath, kiss your mother goodbye, and click the "New" button inside LGP Tools. LGP Tools will doubt our campaign by throwing us a pop up warning. But tell it to fear not! Between you, me, and "it", victory is ours! In the next window navigate to your "char" folder a time once more. Click "Ok" to command LGP Tools to strike with all it's might and soul into this folder. Another window comes up. We boldly type in "char.lgp", confirming our attempt to overthrow the old char.lgp with our new char.lgp (if that even makes sense).

Just click save and get it over with. Now for some reason, after clicking the button to save, LGP Tools just kind of stares at you for a little bit like as if it's in utter disbelief as to what you're doing. Keep your mouse scrolled over it until the timer turns back into an arrow. After this, we have succeeded!

Step 6 - The Clean-Up

Not much to do for this one. Now that we have a new .lgp file, you can go ahead and delete the "char" folder that the uncompressed files were in. Why? Because we can!

Now run the game. You do not need to start a new game now that these textures have been installed but you can if you feel like it. To avoid watching the introduction we all know we've watched a million times, go ahead and load a saved file if you have one. If Cloud's texture has been replaced with a taller, higher detailed figure the likes of which we have never seen (except during the last battle), you have successfully completed this tutorial and I congratulate you. If not, just know that persistance pays. From this point on, the detail of the main characters of the game are going to be, as my Uncle Nelson used to say: A bucket full o' whoop ass. And better yet, it proves a great story to tell your grandkids one day.

Good tutorial. But you should mention that you need version 1.6 of ficedula's lgp tools in order for the process to work (this is mainly where everyone got stuck because they had v1.5).

Thank you for the compliment and feedback. The link leads to a copy of 1.6, but I added a line concerning the older programs in case several people decide not to follow the link.

That was great man! I've finally got the patch to work! Apparently my problem was that the LGPTools wasn't version 1.60. If only someone told be about that sooner...

This tutorial is good, and quite easy to understand. But I don't still understanding how to overwrite read-only files with new LGP-files in CDROM? I did exactly as Veclord's tutorial, and it wasn't some problem. The only problem is when I try to overwrite read-only files with new LGP-files in CDROM. Original LGP-files are in CDROMS, and they must be overwrited with new LGP-files, it's right? Very grateful if some could repond at my question!

Yep, that's correct.

AFAIK (never tested that patch though...) you have to overwrite the file on your HDD (default: C:\Program Files\Final Fantasy VII\data\field), and that's it... Try it.

dziugo: Thank you much for respond. Yes I overwrited files in HDD (Final Fantasy VII\data\field), exatcly as Veclord's tutorial. But when I try to run ff7.exe so I have to run FF7 cdrom too, and i think it crashes because FF7 reads "data\fields" in CD-R too?

Do you really play FF7 with CD-R? Or this tutorial is only for No-CD crack?

If you don't understand me, so take a look here:
as you see the original file in CD-R is smaller than the new file in HDD

It's what i think that FF7 can't read two different but "same" files in both CD-R and HDD, who causes crash?

Just tried that patch... and it worked for me.

Also, if that world_us.lgp file hadn't changed (it'd been just repacked - same size here btw...) then why even bother messing around with it?

I meant that all .lgp files hadn't changed in CD-R, not only world_us.lgp .. Ok... But my question is simple: How to play FF7, when LGP files in CD-R and HD are differents? HD have updated LGP files, while CD-r have original.

Do you run FF7 cd, or no-cd crack? Maybe I did something wrong or my computer is stupid. But I will not give up, till I get it working ;) If you run FF7 cd, then you can please tell me if there are orginal LGP-files in CD (ff7\data\field). Or they have been overwrited?

But it's guarantee that I followed Veclord's tutorial very exactly. But it don't work still... It's because I thinked the error could be CD-R, but now I wonder what the problem could be...?

Anyway I can tell how I installed the Reunion patch:
- Downloaded 1.02 uppgrade + LGP tools 1.6 + Reunion patch
- Backup copies of char.lgp, menu_us.lgp and world_us.lgp
- Unpacked char.lgp, and put all in a new folder (char) in (data\field)
- Installed the Reunion, who uppdated a lot of files in the new folder I created in (data\field)
- Removed the char.lgp
- After this I run the LGP tools and repacked all files in char folder into a new char.lgp
- Opened FF7, the start menu with the Reunion logo working great. But when select New Game or load a game..... CRASH!

I wonder when i removed the original char.lgp... should I have to remove menu_us.lgp and world_us.lgp too before I install the Reunion patch?

And oh yes.. WHY they have LGP files in all FF7 cds, if there are already in HDD?

You should add to your tutorial that this only works with a max install. Otherwise, the files are only on the CD, and they can't be updated on the HD.

Thank you for the advice. After reading your message I added a line at the very beginning of the guide. I was assuming that everyone ran the game with a full installation, and that's a big no no.

cloudis, The fact that the char.lgp file on your CD and hard drive are different sizes is very strange to me. If I were you I would back up my save files and completely uninstall the current FF7 installation, and start this process off a completely fresh install. Be sure to select a maximum install during the setup.

Something I also noticed; Are you using Linux? Your taskbar and etc. look different but it could just be a skin you're using. If you are on Linux, then unfortunately you're likely to have to be jumping through quite a few hoops to get FF7 working alone. Much less a modified version of it.

Linux has a tough time skinning emulated Windows. Nope, that's straight up explorer with WindowBlinds or something. I can also tell because I used to have that particular skin :)

Yarr, I'm back.  8)

So, I did it exactly as said in that magnificent tutorial, but a crash occurs when trying to start the game. And I mean when I click the exe., it won't even go to the main menu.

Maybe it's the LPG Tools...
Does it matter if the Ficedule.dll file is version 1.51? At least I couldn't find a 1.6 version at the site.

And yes, I do have the bought version of the game, updated to 1.2, maximum install and all that...
But I do have the high resolution-patch installed, and the JENOVA-program too.
 :-?

Re-install, anyone?

Edit:
The re-install didn't work. The game just won't start.
Pfft, I cannot be arsed anymore. :z
G'day.

OK, I`m in need of help here.

I apply the patch excactly as the guide says I should do, and it works perfectly until  I get off the train in sector 7 and move to the next screen where I get a crash and "Fail to load daad.a" every-time. If I replace the char.lgp with my original one, it works perfectly. I used the files linked in the guide (and ficedula.dll version 1.51a from ficedulas homepage). I PM`d Reunion about this, and he didn`t quite know what was causing it either. He did tinker around some and changed the level map in mds7plr1 of flevel.lgp which is what loads daad.a (or somesuch technical stuff I didn`t quite understand), and it fixed the specific error, but it returned later in the form of daaa.tor.

The funny thing is; I gave this a new try today. I don`t quite remember the procedure I used, but I think it was identical to the guide and all. And this time it worked. But then I uninstalled the game to get it clean and to re-install the high-res patch and some other stuff. And to my knowledge I did the same procedure, but alas the error creeped up again.

So now I`m trying to figure where the hell things go wrong. It would seem unlikely to be my install CD as it copies the files just fine and works perfectly without the Reunion patch. But it would also not seem to be the Reunion patch itself as others don`t have the problem. So the cause of the problem would seem likely to lie in the tools I`m using or method I`m using. But I`m stumped as to what it could be as I`m following the instructions to the letter and using the linked files.

So could anyone pretty please help a confused fellow?

(and no, I`m not using a pirated, cracked or otherwise funny version of FF7)

EDIT: Heck, I`ve even copied over char.lgp from my disc 1, which I even have a backup of, so I *know* it can`t be my char.lgp that`s corrupted. Even tried all of this on another machine alltogether.

Got the same thing, but figured out why.

In Step 5, after clicking Create (button) I only directed it to the FIELD directory, whereas you're suppose to direct to the CHAR directory.

That created a char.lgp file that was 170+MB. :o
The correct char.lgp file should be 51MB.

Hrm... I'm gonna go ahead and tell you this: I'm pretty sure that if you try installing The SaiNt's Hi-Res patch... after you already have Reunion's Battle Model patch... that the game isn't going to work. That's just what I've read from people.. is that you need to Install the game, then the 1.02 patch, then The SaiNt's patch, then you can install anything else.

Thanks a lot for the tutorial. It really helped. Also, I looked at the main Reunion thread to find out, but you might want to add how to install the NPC patch.

All you have to do is copy over the files from each of the folders into the char folder before you recompile it. There are a bunch of files that get overwritten in the process, but it worked fine for me.

Heya, first time poster...

Anyways, I tried installing this very nice patch using the tutorial..but got an error complaining about a file called BVJF.yos when I tried to start a new game. I have the original english version and not the Ultima ware version.

So, I went on trying about 10 different ways to apply the patch, all leading to the same error. Can anyone help me with this one, or willing to host their working char.lgp?

Finally, is there a new version of this patch incoming anytime soon? Seems like others are having trouble too getting this work.

if you are having trouble installing the reunion texture patch get this

http://www.demonoid.com/torrents/details/205924/

remember to read every thing in the install program as too not to install something you don't like (Hardcode Mode Patch in installerit makes the games harder) and this patch has the option to undo all is has changed but not the ff7.exe the original one is not the original one. ([The_SaiNt]_High_Res_FF7PC_Patcher.rar wont patch so it's not the original 1.02 .exe)

go here as well

http://forums.qhimm.com/viewtopic.php?t=3203

you can make final fantasy 7 pc go to 1280 * 1024

1. Don't revive old threads, especially when your post doesn't have anything to do with the thread (unless you are using this patch?  You should mention that).
2. No reason to post the same request more than once.

Yes, I am using this patch, sorry I didnt mention it. Was just wondering if anyone else had this problem, as I never did before installing the reunion patch and this was the Noobs installation guide. I figured it might possible be due to some clipping in the screen where shes on the ground.
Title: The newbie's tutorial for The Reunion Patch

Hrm...the readme file found in riva_TNT.exe patch linked in the tutorial says it's the readme for version 1.01 although the tutorials says to upgrade to 1.02

Nevertheless, I can't get my new char.lgp created with LGPtools (1.60 build 1, so it should be right version) to work with either original game exe, 1.01 linked in this thread, a 1.02 patch I found elsewhere or the animevamp 1.04 XP patch.  I've got no other patches, like high-res patch, applied either.

Game crashes whenever I try to leave worldmap in my saved game or trying to start a new game ("can't find file..." message like Kinseek and Carbone). The patched world map model works fine though.

I selected a maximum install when making a clean install (although it's only some ~600Mb, not 1Gb like the tutorial says) and I'm quite sure I created the new char.lgp correctly.

*extract original char.lgp to directory data/field/char/
*apply reunion patch (say's it's applied successfully)
*create a new char.lgp with LGPtools with the content of the patched directory
*replace original char.lgp with new char.lgp

Is there anything I've missed?

Maybe it's the LPG Tools...
Does it matter if the Ficedule.dll file is version 1.51? At least I couldn't find a 1.6 version at the site.

And yes, I do have the bought version of the game, updated to 1.2, maximum install and all that...
But I do have the high resolution-patch installed, and the JENOVA-program too.

Re-install, anyone?

Edit:

Well hello there my little friends.

Now, im truly upset. Why is that? For starters evrything our beloved forummember Veclord wrote is exactly what i was doing in the first place. First i want to thank you Veclord for at least make me see that i did the right things in the right order.

But holy smohly, im still upset. Now why is that, really? Well, the reunion patch still causes trouble in loads of pieces. Im kinda stuck really at the point where i should use the program, and well, look at this:

I have absolutley no clue what to do, and am really really tired, not to mention bored of trying to make this work. Therefore im just gonna go and take a nap, and hope that some nice human being knows what the problem is and care to help.

Thank you,,,  :wicked:

Well you are not going to get anyone to upload their files.  The forum does have strict rules against piracy.  You have the German version right?  Have you tried renaming those files to the English name before applying the patch?  This may solve your problem.
Title: The newbie's tutorial for The Reunion Patch

Doesnt work.
The patch checks if you have german or english version, so it wont install if you have the german lgps and their names are _us. It just installs if you have a german file name _gm or an english file named _us.

EDIT: Would it be possible to send me those english patched files per e-mail?

Well, frustrating as hell. This time i got the reunion patch to, well, patch and it all went well, tíl i was going to start a new game that is. Of course the game says "couldnt find bla bla,,," and then shortly after, what my friends? You got it. CRASH!

I´ve tried endlessly many different paths to make this work, i´ve reinstalled FF7 countless amounts of times and it still dosent work, which frustrates you as *ugly word*!

I see that a lot of people have wrote about this in this thread, like Cloudiz, and one that described my problem more correctly, Carbone, at the page 2. Well, i dont know what to do, so i hope this thread will become more active so that more people hopefully wants to write advises and solutions to this problem, cause now folks, i´m giving up  :z

Sorry Grisu, I'm trying to help you out.  Maybe if some one just sent you the patched model files you are missing and not the entire .lgp archive.  Then you could manually put it in your german .lgp files via LGP Tools.  I'm guessing that would be arlight, as it's just a user created/modified model sans installer.  If I'm wrong correct me.  I'm away from home right now so I can't help you with that at the moment. :-?   I'm sure someone can though.

I think you should all go download the NPC reconstruction project instead of reunion's .. 'cause reunion's patch is no longer developed the NPC reconstruction has more models and since my edit it do not need the reunion's patch so why bother trying to make it work ... just download it from here

in the first post click on the link and then click on
"download it now" (you can look at some pics too  )

Hey are there any other good updates for the PC FF7 besides the Reunion patch?

Like for example, has anyone tried using the high res patch WITH the Reunion patch to see what would happen?

And also, is there a sound/music patch to maybe make it higher quality???

Sorry I am new to this forum and trying to learn as much as I can in light of the fact that I just got my discs in the mail today.

Alright...got a problem.

It took me a while to figure out how to do this exactly right, before finding the tutorial of course.  Though, now that I have, I still have a teensy problem.

I've installed/uninstalled both the reunion patch, and bordes NPC reconstruction patch and got the same result.  A re-skinned cloud on the world map...but old blocky klunky cloud(and everyone else) in every other area(town, cave, etc..).  The only thing that has changed is cloud on the world map.

So, my question is this- have you heard of this before, do you know what the problem is?  If not, do you think I may have a eff'ed up char.lgp to begin with?  Thats what im leaning for, but I hope I dont have to go through lots of hassle to get the original bac so im asking here first.  Any ideas?

I know this topic is rather dead but my problem applies to it.

I'm able to follow the tutorial perfectly until I reach the step where the directory is being checked. While it's checking I get an error message saying "This program cannot update the installed version of Final Fantasy VII PC because of the following reason:

C:\Program Files\Square Soft, Inc\Final Fantasy VII\data\menu\menu_us.lpg unknown version."

Thing is, it should be known. I have a legit copy, so it's not like it's reading it wrong.

Do I have to reinstall and do all my other patches over again? Really not looking forward to that kind of work...

Hi, sorry if I shouldn't be posted here as I know it's a pretty dead thread, but...

I would really like to use both the Reunion Patch and the NPC patch together somehow.

Why? Because it would be nice to have the playable characters like Cloud and Barrett etc looking like the models from the FMV (which is apparent on the Reunion Patch) but I also want the other NPCs to look normal using the NPC pack but this cannot be achieved using just one of them. I've tried using a Repack folder that was posted here:

http://www.gzanime.net/index.php?gz=dl&name=ff7

and I tried extracting the repack folder into the char folder I made after doing all that .lgp stuff, using the Reunion patcher and then creating the new lgp file but for some reason the character models all go back to default when I do this.

What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks.
