Alright people, here is your chance to help out the administration staff of Qhimm in cleaning this place up. What do you think Tech related should be changed to to avoid posting confusion.

Maybe something like Scripting and Engineering?

Reverse Engineering sounds ok..ish, but also sounds a little too specific and might cause threads that should go there to be put in places like General.

Game Engine Investigations, while correct in describing the board, sounds very uninviting and more suited for QGears.. I honestly like Tech Related more.

Inner Workings isn't descriptive enough I don't think and would rely 100% on the board description for people to know what to post in it.

Game Mechanics isn't bad, but also reminds me of GameFAQs and doesn't really sound like a board for strictly serious inquisitive posting

Out of those, I'd say "Game Mechanics" is the best. "Reverse Engineering" sounds too illegal, "Game Engine Investigations" sounds too long-winded and "Inner Workings" sounds too unprofessional.

However, I'm not convinced that the board needs to be renamed, especially if we're not sure which name would be better. It should only be changed if we can absolutely agree that there is a name which is far more appropriate.

What about Scripting and File Formats? And then we can put in the details what types of things are to be put there.

Perhaps it could be split By GAME, would make it a bit ezer to keep it all neatly organized..

Im not so sure about this one, Technical Inquiry is to ambiguous.

The board is where we discuss the algorithms and file formats of a precompiled binary. By definition, it is a reverse engineering board.

It doesn't matter if that sounds a little furtive. We could call tech related 'bunnies and flowers' - that still wouldn't stop Square issuing a CND if we divulge the details of an exclusive technology or the like.

'Mechanics' is poorly defined, and users will find it hard to know what we mean. Does it mean the 'rules' of the game (as it would outside this board)? Does it exclude something like model parsing routines? Does it refer exclusively to the subjects covered in TFerguson's 'mechanics' documents? etc. etc.

'Engine investigations' sounds like we're tackling only the 3D engine; 'inner workings' seems vague to me. I still think 'reverse engineering'.

I think "Game Mechanics" will still draw in those people thinking that they can post their modded errors. You need something that bluntly states that the forum they are entering is hosting highly technological conversations about the game data and the compilation/engineering/using/dumping/changing of that data. That's why I voted for the one that may be a little big but it has an intimidation factor with it.

i say keep it as is no point in changing it as it suits what people tend to post in tech related plus none of the names pop out as being the right name for this type of forum plus with it being tech its easy for even most newbies to understand if they've read the rules in any way shape or form.

"Inner Workings" just doesn't sound right next to the other board titles.

"Game Mechanics" seems like the most generalized (especially when compared to "Reverse Engineering"). I think that's the best bet, personally.

I don't like "Scripting and Engineering". Somehow, it just seems… too serious.

Ah, but that is the beauty behind it. Any "newbie" who sees it will immediately know his thread doesn't belong there. Most threads I have to move come from Tech Related because people think the reason their graphic mod won't work is some technical problem.

I think "Game Mechanics" is no more likely to get misplaced threads than "Scripting and Engineering", because both names sound more specific than "Tech-related Discussion". I think the name only needs to be specific to a point, though. "Scripting and Engineering" strikes me as being needlessly specific. I'd imagine there's some threshold level of specificity, past which the name of the board will no longer affect how frequently wrong things get posted there. (I didn't know how else to phrase that…)

Just my opinion. I realize that you probably know a lot better than me. But no matter what it's renamed to, some of the less 'forum-savvy' people who come here will still post the wrong stuff in the wrong places.

I have to agree with Bosola on how "Game Mechanics" could refer only to the rules of the game.

"Game Mechanics" seems to be an actual term. I don't understand it too well, but it doesn't really cover internal workings. It seems to be more about gameplay.

Agree with Bosola on this one. Reverse Engineering. I'm not sure if there should be separate sub-boards for FF7, FF8, and FF9 - since I hate sub-boards - but three boards per game seems a bit much. Maybe every post in Projects, Mods, Tools, and Reverse Engineering (or whatever you call it) should be prefixed by FF7, FF8, or FF9?

And there needs to be some distinction between something which alters a game mechanic, or a part of a game, and a complete overhaul of the game which includes alterations to game mechanics and many parts of the game.

I like Obesebear's reasoning. If you've been here for awhile, it really doesn't matter what it is named because we all know what goes there. If it is renamed, the new name of the board means a lot more to new members.

As for comments about some names sounding uninviting, that's pretty much what I was going for. Tech Related is like the library of the boards. No messing around in there (messing with hot chicks between bookshelves is ok though)!

I would take Tools out of Projects, swap Mods and Projects, rename Projects to Work in Progress.

I think it definitely needs to contain the word Engineering, if only to serve as an obvious sign to new members that they probably have no business being in there.
