What really concerns me in that article is the talk of nations using malware as weaponry. If governments decide that certain technical information could help 'cyber-terrorists', they might restrict access to it.

I worry that one day, researching this technical info for personal, benign interests will become a criminal offense.

There are plenty of ways around that.  Duckduckgo is a search engine that actually cares about privacy.

It's not about whether there are workarounds. It's about the principle that tinkerers and reverse engineers could get lumped in with criminals.
