Luminous Studio engine
« on: 2012-06-06 19:44:13 »
Anybody else catch the new tech demo of Square's new engine? I'm pretty impressed to say the least, let's hope they do something good with it now.

For those who haven't seen it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVX0OUO9ptU

It certainly looks good, but it's also worth noting that this isn't a PS3 or XBOX 360. The YouTube tags say DirectX 11, so it's probably running on Windows, and I'd be willing to bet a beast of a machine (dual GTX 690s in SLI, perhaps?). At least for a while, anything they make with this engine is likely not to take full advantage of it, unless they don't want people to be able to play their games.

It's been said that that footage was from a next gen console so possibly ps4, xbox4, wiiu and more consoles like that wow even for a tech demo and all that in real-time just shocking

Yeah, could be a next gen console. I would hope the next-gen would step into DX11...

If it's a next-gen console, then it's a new XBOX (where did you get 4 from? There's only been two so far). PS4 and WiiU are pretty much guaranteed not to use DirectX at all, considering it's a proprietary Microsoft technology.

WiiU is current gen, it's running 3 or 4 year old hardware or something like that.

I'm impressed, although if it really is just a tech demo then whatever they make with it is bound to be Nomurafied;  I would never have guessed this was Square at all, at least not contemporary Square.

It seemed to be more of a western-based project by the art style.

Wow, nice toolset they've got... Creation on DX11, export to xbox,ps3,etc

Also Bishamon seems to be a nice tool, could probably be used for FFVII particle effects...
 8-)

I summarized on this engine here.

Basically, some of your excitement from the action in the demo itself spills over into your judgement on the quality of the engine.  Unfortunately, as someone on the inside, I can say that there is really nothing new at all in terms of technology anywhere in the engine.  It is nothing but the combination of a lot of existing research papers oriented towards modern architectures with high-quality art thrown in.

I'd be willing to bet a beast of a machine (dual GTX 690s in SLI, perhaps?).
Not at all.  While I can’t say exactly what hardware was used in that specific demo, the engine runs in DirectX 11 at that speed on fairly inexpensive—but recent—hardware.  Dual cards is nowhere near necessary.

I agree with your summary in certain aspects. I respect your knowledge and experience in the field for sure. In my opinion, I wasn't really swayed by the 'action' I really didn't like it that much. I was way more impressed with the lighting overall, shadows, particle effects, and hair. Facial expressions were pretty awesome too but a lot of these things are attributed to DX11 as you said. I agree that it didn't show off too much that was 'new' but I don't really agree that my judgement was swayed by the action going on.
