Rule Change: Telling people you're ignoring them
« on: 2012-10-12 00:52:14 »
Summary

There is a new rule, effective immediately: Do not tell someone that you are ignoring them

Details

Naturally, this includes telling someone that you are about to ignore them.

An exception is when you tell other posters that ignore stopped you seeing a member's post, but only for the purpose of resolving confusion. Flaunting ignore status or taunting someone with it is prohibited.

Why the change?

The reason for this is that a few people around here use the "I'm sticking you on ignore" line as a parting shot in an argument, which generally escalates things.

If you want to put people on ignore, that's fine, but do it quietly and move on.

Since it's still possible to see the ignored users posts it's only confusing to the ignored if they're directly addressing the ignorer especially in the middle of an argument. This might make the ignored think they made such a brilliant infallible point of indisputable logic that it blew the ignorer's mind rendering him/her speechless. Since we know this is never the case of any Internet-related argument, the ignored would just gradually be ignored by more and more people until no one is paying attention to them anymore.

In light of the above extremist-case scenario, I'd almost advocate removing the option to ignore users (if such a thing were possible) and just use your own God-given mental filters to actively ignore someone as in the case of someone like Hermoor. Not that I ignore him, but I'm going to actively stay out of arguments where he's making the bulk of the statements.

These are my thoughts as well. I don't need a button to ignore people. I just stop associating with them whenever possible and move on.

You and I both know this will never happen.

It is a little too much to ask of everyone, isn't it? I can still hope for a better world...

That's like expecting that every new user reads the FAQ, the rules and uses the search function

I can only hope people at least search before asking. Many don't. I know how annoying it is, so whenever I register to a new forum, I always search and read the rules before. So that I'm not annoying (even if I still am).

I didn't need to read rules carefully to know how to behave in a forum anyway...
