Having dealt with Sony when it comes to reversing things. I think that it's pretty safe to tear open the FF7 engine and spill it's guts. It's been done with 6 and the square engine has evolved to something extreamly different when seen in the PSX2. There are two things to remeber when reversing.

1) Tearing apart and publishing is perfectly within the rights of copyright law (at least in america) even with the DMCA in place. The 9th appelette court upheld the right to reverse engeneer. One of the lawyers who had briefed that circut cout was also involved with sony vs. connectix, which I was involved with. You cannot use the original source code to reverse with however. But I don't see Square giving this to us, no matter how outdated the engine is.

2) When creating a dervitive work from the reversing. It's safest not to be involved in the ripping apart process. It's not nessasary, but it saves headaches. The people working on the derivitive work can work on engine specs puiblished from the revering process. The FF7 linux engine will be dirived from taking apart the win32 version. I'll try and not deal with the original win32 verson, but I'm already "tainted". I'm kind of breaking my own safeguard here, but you have to break a few eggs...

I hope this clears up some things.

Sure little bridges for your hotwheels cars. I wouldn't take my 1999 Kia Sephia over a bridge made of the stuff.

Ok, lemme get this stright... FF8 remake in VB. Lemme give you some pointers about goofy projects, as I am the master.

1) Before announcing to the world your goofy project, make absolutly sure that the only thing standing in your way is your own modivation. For example, *my* FF8 project (creating a two-hour 3D fan movie of FF8) is currently holded because I'm too lazy to look though the data for the battle scenes to decipher thier meaning. Right now most everyone on the forum here is too busy with the FF7 breakthroughs to tear up FF8.

2) The "Field of Dreams" 'If you make it, they will come' type ideas are very hard to have any progress on. Often they don't.

3) For the love of God man, learn a real language. Not that I'm dumping on VB, well OK I am, but that particular "language" is nothing more than a leggo system for win32 apps. Leggos are great to play with, but you are not going to be making any bridges out of them anytime soon. Learn C or C++. It's free to download and run I'll even give you some pointers.

First get a POSIX C/C++ compiler. That MS VC++ is garbage. A good one is  http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/" TARGET=_blank>DJGPP

After you have that installed, grab Allegro, a free game programming lib. It's  http://alleg.sourceforge.net/allegro/" TARGET=_blank>here.

Even though Aleegro has OpenGl in it, you can get a free do-all 3d engine called  http://crystal.linuxgames.com/" TARGET=_blank>Crystalspace  take a look at that.

Then, after that, can you tear apart the battle scenes and tell me what thier structure is. I'm stuck ^_^

I suggest the pink Garbage CD with the black G on it. The one with "I'm just a girl" should work.

how to clean a CD with toothpaste:

1) put a small amount of water on the scratch, being very careful not to get the water near the edge, as water tends to wick between the plastic and ruin the foil.

2) taking a tiny dab of toothpaste on your finger scrub gently in circles where the scratch is. After a while the toothpaste will start to dry and flake. Add a tiny bit more water/paste when this starts to happen.

3) The idea behind it is that toothpaste is a fine abrasive. (Take some and rub it between your fingers, you'll feel the "grit" to it.) It smoothes out the scratch's edges and makes it easier for the laser to pass, as opposed to a jaggy gouge that reflects the light at odd angles.

4) *WARNING* the wrong type of toothpase can stain the plastic or be to "gritty" and will make the CD worse. Please try on a garbage CD before you get the technique right

It's later.

ATB

The ATB is on the upper right hand corner. I will call this the ATB list. It shows when everyone will be having thier turn. For example, Yuna, Lulu, and Tida are fighting a monster The list on the right hand side shows Yuna with her ATB bar, then lulu under her with her ATB, and Tida with his ATB. Then there is a monster icon (a B) and his ATB. There is a white line along the left side of the ATB list that shows who in line is in the cuurent rounbd.  The order for the next round is also shown under that with a black line to the left. Pressing the R2 button will show the turn order beyond the next two rounds. Pretty cool. If there is a character below the one who is "up" who also has ATB you can press the triangle key to use them, but you can't do as much. (longer spells are disabled, you don't have the time to cast them). After that character's attack is done, the next in line pops up and the ATB list ir re-ordered.

During summons, the characters no longer battle. All of them leave and you just control the summoned monster. The ATB list is now not used and is gone. No idea how long the summon battles last.

Along the top there is a semi-trasperent "help" bar that tells you what does what. You can turn it off using "select"

I feel better about the battle system now.

Upon closer inspection I stand corrected, the magic is not one-shot, the numbers to the right is how many MP is consumed. Also, it seems that there are the same old-fasoned *woosh* field battles. when the scene goes from field to battle the curent frame cracks up and shatters like glass. Boss fights however move from field to battle seamlessly.

More on the new ATB and switching out characters. Switchouts are not on the menu, most likely you push the R1 or L1 button to pull up the switch menu. The switch menu appears in the upper left corner. You highlight the reserve character to switch in. and then stitch happens. you can switch back and forth until the character you want is selected, but that once that character is "set" the ATB goes back to 0 again.

more later

You walk out of the inn and into the street. A bad looking soldier is there. You Say "hey wassup" and he gets grumpy. "I'm going to kill you"

The Camera pans to behind the main character, the scene down't change.  a little water ripple and the menus come up. No whoosh. oh and after you summon a beast, he is a member of your party. You contol him for the duration of the battle.

I was able to get the inside skinny on the technology and program flow on the newest Final Fantasy. There are some improvement as well as some setbacks to FF10. This is all hearsay and roumors but I was able to at least talk to the wife of a square devoper to see what was going on. Sneaky me ^_^

First and formost, Square's "even team" is working on this one. they were responsable for FF8 which I wan't a big fan of. You can visually tell it's the same dev team from the character designs to some of the aspects of the battle system, which I will be getting into later.

Let's talk about what's diffent.

The engine uses a extramly modded version of the bouncer engine. Kind of like when FF8 used a modded version of the parasite eve engine. The Anti-alising is done in software using the "fuzzy-blur" method. It's a shame that the hardware AA is sooo slooow. Oh well, every PSX must have a critical hardware bug in it. (The original PSX had a clipping bug in the GPU, that's why clipping looked so bad in many many many games)

The fields are not pre-rendered anymore. I have mixed feelings about this. Will square give up some detail in thier renders for 3d graphics again (I know, the renders were only 320x244, but they looked good on a TV screen) The backgrounds I've seen so far have been less then stellar. The game isn't done yet though.

The battle module and the field module have been merged so the system can go from drama to battle seamlessly. There is no "whooh" with a cool mosic and then a 3d battle stage.  I havn't seen if thw world map still enters battle the old way or not. When you run from a battle, the monster is still in the environment The battle menus are gon though.

The battle system has gotten cooler and dumber at the same time. Here's how it works.

The battle uses three characters like in 8, but you can swap in your other party members during battle. In the upper right hand corner there are icons of the three characters in battle with an ATB bar after them. below that you have the monsters icons and thier ATB bar (yes, you can see them now) and then the remaining characters that are "banked out" are placed under that with full ATB. I'm not too clear on how characters can be switched in.

Every character has a job class like in 9. Yuna is a summoner, lulu is a white mage. That is cool. There is also an antho-lion who is a dragoon (has the "jump command") But with sadness I must announce that the "one-shot" magic system from FF8 is back again.

There is no drawing from what I can tell. Also junctions appear to be absent. When you aqire spells from a yet-to-be-determined way. You will only have so much. The menus I saw had "blizard 8 firga 22 stop 12" selectable after the magic command was issued.
The commands are also swappable, you have three slots (as opposed to FF8 which had four) I beleave one of the battle commands can not be switched out (The "intresic" one if you will) but I've seen "item" switched for something else. The menus are semi-trasparent blue. They look pretty.

Mogs are there.

Speech! augh, square better get some good voice actors, Trust me, if we get some sort of Resident Evil voices, square would know.

That's it for my report now... comments ^_^

"bumming" huh?
In American english a "bum" is someone who is homeless. Bumming has differnt meanings here in america. Here it means 1) to borrow something because you don't have enough money (i.e. being bum) .2) to hang around town doing nothing. (bums with nowhere to go)  3) to be depressed emotonaly

eg 1) -borrow
"I bumming a cigeritte off of james"
"I need to bum a lighter from you"

eg 2) -go out
"Me and sally are going bumming downtown"

eg3) -depressed
"I don't feel good, I'm seriosly bumming"

I just thought is was funny. I remeber in high school the forgin exchange student from england (a girl) asked if she could have a "rubber"
I went to the bathroom, bought a condom and gave it to her. I guess she didn't quite get it. Heven forbid she would ask for me to "knock her up in the morning"

I use several unix systems at work (actully three Linux systems and a Sun station) And I can tell you that I have never once had a catastophic program failure that wan't because of my own stupidity. Even then it wasn't that terrible. My main mail client is pine so all I have to do is telnet in from school to see what's going on. I use mozilla as my browser of choice. Because pine manupulates the mail spools directly I have no problem importing/exporting the mail to ther clinets. (Mozilla can use the mail spools too)  I use procmail for my filters and can filter out spam with well written regex. (Regular expressions) I show down X every day (but not the system) to flush any open shared libs I happen to have open and so far haven't needed a reboot for a system crash. (I do dual boot one machiene into windows once in a while to write out my Japanese homework, I can't do it in linux because the higher ups won't allow me to bring in my japanese keyboard from home)   Linux is, and always will be, a text-based os. If you think that X11R6 is a GUI for linux, next time you have a chance, just type "X" on the command line (capital letter) and see what X really looks like, won't be much.

Nice of you to see you over here on the good side. If you want a little more proof, to a search for "secure audio path" which also comes with XP. Basicly it does a "secirity check" on your sound card drivers and the mp3 to make sure that the audio stream isn't getting piped off to somehing else like an mp3 encoder or hard drive. If the audio is tapped upstream, it would be encrypted and useless. The sound driver does the decryping and playing keeping you out of the loop.

A side shot is that things like winamp plugins, that use the raw sound streams to make the pretty fluff on the screen will no longer work, but Microsoft Windows media player will work great.
