That is what he means.  Same as what has happened with the boom in noobs recently when the mods and this forum got reviewed.

You know, a surprising amount of my traffic comes from people searching for FF7 mods.

(Not that I think it's my reviews you're talking about.  My audience numbers in the dozens.  On a busy day.)

Anyway...yay, I guess?  At least it looks like they cleaned up the video files, and it'll probably take less tweaking to get it to run.  That's...pretty much bare minimum, and "bare minimum" is about what I'm expecting here.

Checking in; bit late to the party and could be that I'm once again correcting things you've already caught.  But just in case:

{RED XIII}
“The Promised Land?
   That's just a legend?”
------------------------------
President Shinra
“But an enthralling legend.
   So enticing that it must be persued.”{NEW}

"That's just a legend" isn't a question; I'd say put either a period or an exclamation point there, or even an ellipsis depending on how you read Red's mood there.

And "pursued", not "persued".

I really cannot fathom why anyone would go into a retranslation mod and want to keep inaccurate things from the earlier release, but then I also cannot understand why Square saw fit to build its canon around mistakes made by 1 lone localiser.

Part of it's probably force of habit -- I've got sense memory associated with "Megalixir" and if I'm frantically scrolling through a menu I won't be looking for "Last Elixir".  (Same problem when a game with Xbox controller layout tells me to press X -- I keep thinking X is either on top, as on the SNES, or bottom, as on PS.)  Course, I didn't like the -ra/-aga suffixes when they started using them in FF8 but I got used to them.

Part of it, too, is that some things don't quite work as translations.  Just what IS a Last Elixir, exactly?  What makes it the "last" one?  Best guess is it's intended as something like "Ultimate".  "Ultimate" and "Last" are technically synonymous, but "ultimate" has a different connotation.  (Which I assume is why the series is called "Final" Fantasy in the first place -- if it were called Ultimate Fantasy we would have been spared 20 years of stupid "How can it be FINAL when there are sequels?" jokes.)

And what's a Phoenix Tail?  I'm guessing it's not supposed to be a complete tail, just a tailfeather.  And while "down" is obviously not the same thing as a tailfeather, "tailfeather" or even just "feather" sure is a lot of characters, so I can see why Woolsey went for a shorter word.

Anyhow, moot point; you're the guy in charge and I'm not trying to change your mind or anything.  But those are the things that pop into my head as reasons I'd keep Square's existing canon.

And this is a month old so you've probably fixed it by now, but in case you missed it:

   (Oh and did you hear?
    About the his wife
    finding out about all this?)”

{CHOICE}You're a slum drunk

I think the original "the" works better than "a".  "Slum drunk" is like "town drunk", right?  As in, one specific and notorious person.

Also see multiple commas without spaces after them; assume that'll be changed in the final?

Other'n that not noticing anything I'd change.  So far so good.

And that is the point...  he is educated.

Where was he educated?

Are we really saying that if you are black you automatically have to be dumb?

No.  But he grew up a poor coal miner, regardless of his race.  I'd expect him and Dyne to have a similar manner of speaking.

I don't understand it...  I know Mr T is a great guy (and he is educated too btw), I love him...  but Baskett made Barrett into Mr T and that isn't just wrong, it is unprofessional.

I'm not crazy about the way he talks in Baskett's translation either, but I hardly think HE'S the one who made him into Mr. T.  I mean, LOOK at the guy.

And aside from his physical appearance, he is most certainly an Angry Black Man.  That's got unfortunate connotations too -- of course, the difference between an Angry Black Man and a black man who happens to be angry is open to considerable interpretation.

I have said from the beginning 1 of the MAJOR differences this localisation will have is that Barrett is not a stupid dumb black guy.

I'm all for not having him talk like Mr. T or any other kind of stereotype, and he certainly shouldn't be stupid.  But "educated" might take it a bit too far.  Self-educated, maybe?  He strikes me as the sort of guy who's probably cracked a few philosophy books, studied a bit of history.  I imagine him throwing down Loveless after the first two pages, though.

Dunno.  Food for thought.

The link appears to be dead and I don't see a newer one in your later posts (or in the OP).  Is there a current release for testing?  (Hope I haven't just missed something in an old post again; don't want to waste your time or anything.)

It also bears noting that the GBA translation really does include a hell of a lot of the Woolsey text -- it just essentially doubles each of his lines to add more detail and nuance.

Its one real drawback was that the additional text (and obnoxious text crawl, a "feature" which did not need to be added) threw off the audio synch of the ending.  Shadow's apparent suicide loses a lot of its effect when the background music has already changed to Strago's theme.

But I really do find the GBA translation the best I've seen, and would love to see it retrofitted into the technically superior SNES version of the game.  Add me in as another guy looking forward to this.

So really, her existence isn't a retcon, but it's more of how they brought her in.

Right, that's it in a nutshell: Bugenhagen alludes to the existence of a mate somewhere out there, but it's clearly implied that Red hasn't met her yet.

Me, I still prefer to think the entire human race was wiped out and Red was the only survivor.

Well, and his mate.  Whoever she was.

ERROR: unhandled exception

Something happened when I installed the Avalanche GUI (2.0.8); FF7 had been working fine until then -- but I'm finding that it's not just the mod causing the issue, as even when I set "mod_path = none" the error persists.

I noticed in the old 0.7.9 thread that pyrozen made reference to an old Avalanche installer looking for an old registry setting that doesn't exist with the new version of the driver, but I'm not sure if that's pertinent as I'm running the latest version of both the driver and the GUI mod.  (And in any case I'm not sure which registry setting I'd need to tweak to fix it even if this were the problem; the post makes reference to a .reg file included with older versions of the driver, but I don't know how far back I need to go to find it; there's no .reg file with 0.7.8.)

I've got FF7 running on 2 different computers and the other one had no trouble at all with the latest GUI mod -- obviously my solution for the time being is just to use the other computer, but I'd like to work out a fix on this one too.

Both computers are running the same set of mods, with one exception: the working machine is using the Avalanche Graphical Overhaul hi-res version, and the problem machine is using the lo-res.  I installed the lo-res overhaul mod before installing the GUI mod, and it worked fine until I added the GUI mod.

I also notice, as I pick through that log, that the thing that probably stands out is my weird resolution.  The problem machine is hooked up to a TV; there's overscan, and so the resolution is set to 1260x688 instead of 1280x720.  The nonstandard resolution doesn't appear to be causing the problem, however, as it occurs at standard resolutions like 1280x720 and 640x480.

Anyhow, I suppose that's all the pertinent info short of the .dmp file; would it help if I included that too?  Hope somebody can help; thanks.

Team Avalanche / Re: GUI v2.0

Hi guys, thanks for all your great work and hope this is the right thread to post in.

I installed 2.0.8 and couldn't get it to work; I eventually realized that the installer had added a new "mod_path" line at the top of the file but hadn't removed the existing line, which created a conflict.  No biggie and an easy fix but figured I'd share in case anybody else runs across the same issue.

Also, the installer appears to change permissions on the ff7_opengl.cfg file so that only admins have read privileges.  Again, a minor thing but it might be worth looking at (or not, since the game doesn't really run without admin privileges in the first place).

(EDIT: Tried installing 2.0.8 on another computer and neither of these problems occurred.  Not sure why they happened on the first computer but the perms change, at least, happened with both 2.0.5 and 2.0.8 on that first one.  So I've been able to duplicate the problem on the same computer but not on a second one.)

Also, the sticky thread still links 2.0.5 and I didn't initially notice this thread had a newer version.

Thanks again for the mod and hope I've been some help to somebody.
