Title: Need Emulator Info
Post by: Tony Cossio on 2001-04-21 13:36:00
TextTextTextI was wondering if anybody has had any luck emulating FFIX on the computer.  I have Connectix and Bleem and they do not work (I see Square Presents and a black screen) I contacted connectix and they told me that square has a gay block that they can't crack (okay so they did not say GAY).  I was wondering if anyone has any info/patch about an emulator for FFIX or if anybody thinking of developing one.

I'd recommend you to use ePSXe instead. It's so much better than bleem and CVGS.

When I tried ff9 in cvgs it didnt give me the battle menus, epsxe works fast and makes it look better than on the psx (if you have FSAA enabled anyway)

Joey:

Try changing the settings?  Use Knack's software GPU plug-in, set to 640x480, 21 inch and "normal speed" for the speed adjustment.  This gives you most speed if your 3D card is no good.

Ok dumb question time... I downloaded epsxe and uh the bios or a bios the video driver petes and i am just curious can you actually use your playstation games in your cd rom drive or do you have to download some type of roms... ( i just decided to delve into this new emulation crap yeah i got nesticle  :) ) psmplay is smooth i just watched some fmvz from FF9 but like i said probably a dumb question please forgive me...

Yes, you can read the PSX cd's from your CD-Rom drive. I don't think many people can afford to d/l roms of and PSX game that spans even 2 cd's or more.  :)

Yeah, I like ePSXe.  I use Pete's pluggins for the GPU (I have the D3D, OpenGL, and Software versions.  Amazingly, the Software one works better than the other two!!)

The only thing that isn't too good is the sound.  If only I could find a good SPU pluggin . . .

Sound? I use Null2's Audio Driver 1.35 and for me it works gr8 (reverb, tone cache, sound linear interpolation, vag stream) It just requires some time to configure it properly (buffer length and number of blocks, it's generally different for each sound card - cpu configuration)

I use nulls audio driver sounds good, although the software gpu is pretty crap petes gpu works good for me

ok after hacking around in it a bit i answered my own question... but i got another one.. i have a voodoo 3 and i got petes plugins when i use the more advanced plugins it runs slow as hell then i got that fixed but the menus come up all distorted and i dont get battle menus.. yes i checked the ff7 menu fix either way it doesnt matter... anyone got a clue?

Yeah you have to fiddle around with the plugins alot to get it to work correctly, try changing the box with the 3 options (two of which being extended and standard) to standard, that sorted problems with my battle menus out.

I have a voodoo 3 card too and ran into the same promblem. I lowered my desktop colors from 24 bit to 16 bit and know it runs twice as fast with little slow down. Many factors determine the speed and look of the game, not just the graphics card. This makes it hard to pinpoint a good universal driver. That is why we have drivers in the first place. My best advice is to run through all the drivers one at a time and mess with the settings. It took me 3 hours to run through all the video drivers to find a fast speed without sacraficeing graphics or sound. In closing I would like to say that I found epsxe the best emulator out of CVGS and Bleem. Bleem looks good but the sound is terrible. CVGS runs fine but has little options so you cannot enhance the graphics.

Simon: Bad luck mate but if you have the PAL version (like me!!!!! :-{  ) then you can't run it!!!

Some kinda super-smart protection on the cd or something!

Does anyone know if it is possible now (or will be possible in the future) to emulate PS2 games on the pc?
Title: Need Emulator Info

PS2 emulation would be hard because of the way it transfers information around, it uses buses with high bandwidths to minimise bottlenecks whereas a PC doesnt. The way to get around this is to create a virtual bus but I dont believe that current PC's are fast enough to do so yet. Also when people emulate things they dont know precisley what each chip does and they make guesses which is why some games do not work, the game calls a part of  the chip that is not emulated probably becauses they dont know it is there. This is why it has taken so long for PSX emulation to get to a good enough stage whereby you could just get by without a PSX and I don't believe that the next-gen consoles will be emulated to a level where you could play games properly for about 4-5years.
I hope that made sense in the jumbleed up way i wrote it.

Of course it will be possible in the future. I wouldn't want to try it on current PC's though.

Think about how much PC's have advanced in the last 5 years ... in 5 years time? We'll be approaching 10GHz. (Moores Law).

10Ghz? IN FIVE YEARS!?!?! hell nah just a while ago we reached 1.0 GHZ.. probably a few months... already we can reach .. (I'm talking retail here) but i can get 1.7 Ghz already... five years who knows where the hell technology will be...

Ever heard of Moore's Law? It states that every 18 months, CPU speeds double. It's proved pretty reliable over the past, oooh, 30 years or so. I guess you'd get above 10GHz in 5 years slightly applying it to 1.7 as the current speed.

I like Murphy's law better.  It states that for some odd reason, every month or two your computer will completely screw up any you'll be computerless for a week or more.  My life has proven it correct, except this seems to happen more often to me.
