Completely Unrelated / THE OLYMPIC LOGO IS RACIST!
« on: 2011-03-04 00:59:52 »
Iran has complained that the logo for the 2012 Olympic Games in London is racist. What looks like the number "2012" on acid is in fact, according to some fuckhead, the word "ZION". Clearly, this was a deliberate attack on the entire Islamic word; the vague abstract logo that hardly looks like anything at all obviously says "Zion", and we know that saying "Zion" is racist.

The BBC reporting on the matter. What's disturbing is that they are taking it seriously instead of bursting out laughing.

The offending logo:

This can only be taken to spell Zion, a vicious racist attack.

I'm currently watching Watson play Jeopardy; he's doing well. This is a pretty big event in the history of AI.

EDIT:

He's currently tied with one of the greatest players around; he started off very strongly but lost his lead in the second half.

So, in my recent attempt to use a /sci/ meme that I doubt anyone will recognise, I noticed that what I did could be used by people who need to post spoilers.

The two web colours that are used in threads are

color="#e7eaef" (for the dark grey post backgrounds)

and

color="#f0f4f7" (for the light grey ones)

If you use the "change color" function, you can change the colour of the text to whichever of these colours is appropriate, making the spoiler invisible to anyone who doesn't highlight the text. Therefore, when your post is going to have the light background, you'd need

Code: [Select]
[color=#f0f4f7]This is a spoiler[/color]
And when your post is going to have the dark background

Code: [Select]
[color=#e7eaef]This is a spoiler[/color]
Note that you must use the # before the colour code.

The results will look like this:

This is a spoiler: Aeris dies and Bridget is a dude. Highlight the text to read it.

I loved /r9k/ and /new/ was always lulzy. True, /r9k/ had gone stale since the golden age of tripfags (oh, to see ad majorem arguing with athens and investment banker again!), but I still feel sad to see the loss of the place where I spent most of 2009.

Also

Finally, moot-kun is taking suggestions for new boards. I demand that everyone request a board dealing with philosophy or religion so we can finally get rid of the troll threads relating to these topics, especially the ones that infest /sci/.

The oft repeated urban myth that beautiful people are stupid appeals to our jealousy and insecurity, but anyone who really pays attention can see that this is not true. In fact, smart people are better looking than stupid people. The media would have us believe otherwise, but if one compares, for example, those at elite universities to people flipping burgers in McDonald's, one can clearly see that intelligence and attractiveness are positively correlated. What's interesting about this study is that it shows that the correlation holds even when controlling for things like wealth and social class.

It looks like scientists have finally found an explanation for my incredible handsomeness. The sheer magnitude of it was a mystery up until now, but it looks like it has been explained.

Now we must wonder what's next. Will science discover a correlation between intelligence and penis size? As long as I'm included in the survey, I think it will

The worrying thing is that the attention towards her suggests that some people who were /b/tards when she first became famous are still on /b/ now. How can anyone stay there for more than a month or so without going crazy? What are the psychological effects of staying there for so long?

Either that, or they're all newfags. That wouldn't actually be very surprising.

Last year, the political opponent of Arizona senatorcongresswoman Gabrielle Giffords said:

Apparently, one of her supporters seems to have taken the exhortation a little too literally.

Or maybe he was angry with her poor grammar?

This is very encouraging. We don't know whether spam will stay at this low level, but it's a good sign. Perhaps spam is seen as less profitable nowadays? After all, people are more savvy than they used to be and filters are more effective. Or maybe spammers are moving to facebook in order to target the stupid. In any case, it's some good news to start the year with.

Completely Unrelated / I JUST HAD A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE!
« on: 2010-12-05 19:17:47 »
So, I turn on my PC and what do I see after the BIOS screen?

"Missing operating system"

Sh*t! What's worse, I'm a tinfoil hat wearer and everything I have is encrypted. This isn't just a case of slamming the Widows 7 disc in there and fixing everything in a few minutes. No, the system drive is encrypted and Windows wouldn't recognise anything. So I frantically searched the myriad optical disks in my room for the Truecrypt rescue disc for my desktop. I found it, but that wasn't the end of the story.

I stuck the rescue disk in there and still couldn't do anything. It kept telling me that my password was wrong so I pressed F8 and restored the key. Was that the end of the problem? Nein! It tells me the boot partition is missing. At this point I am no longer shitting bricks; I'm shitting houses. I try to get truecrypt to permanently decrypt the disk to see if that could help anything (would that make it easier to fix the problem with disc checking software or the Windows disc? Probably not, but I was willing to try everything). Then it tells me that it can't read the disc. What's worse, it told me that I had to press esc to safely abort the decryption; turning of the power would permanently f*ck up everything. But pressing esc didn't do anything! It kept beeping and telling me that it couldn't read the disk and I eventually had to press the reset button to get it out of this loop.

By this point, I had conceded that the data on my seven month old Spinpoint F3 was probably gone; I hadn't backed up for three months. By this point, I was no longer sh*tting bricks or sh*tting houses. I was shitting the motherf*ucking Palace of Versailles!

I trawled the internet for people with similar errors and found several conversations about disc checking software but nothing concrete. I'm downloading bootable disc checkers (because I couldn't boot Windows, see?) and meanwhile I'm putting an old Linux live CD in my drive and downloading a Linux version of TC because I'd heard that the rescue CDs often saw problems that weren't there. Would this be more successful? I didn't have a fucking clue what I was doing because I was tired and desperate.

So, I take the USB stick with the Linux version of TC I'd downloaded and was about to stick it in the slot when I noticed something

There was another USB stick in there that I'd completely forgotten about. A while ago, I had set the boot priority for USB sticks higher than the priority for the internal HDD. I remember not being able to boot at other times when I still had a USB stick in there, but every other time I'd remembered that I'd left a stick in, so there wasn't a problem. Could this be the reason why it didn't boot? Had I not put the boot priority back?

I took the stick out, pressed the reset button and prayed to Richard Dawkins that it would work. I entered my TC password and, for a second, the screen went black instead of telling me there was no bootable partition. Then I saw Windows starting up.

I haven't been so relieved and embarrassed for a long time! ;D

Completely Unrelated / The leaked documents
« on: 2010-11-29 19:53:41 »
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past few days

So, what do people think of the leaked documents and the effects they might have on international politics.

TBH, it looks like none of them said anything that wasn't fairly well known already: The Americans hate European leaders and the UN, the Arabs hate the Iranians (geez, what's next? Protestants hate Catholics?) and the Israelis want to bomb the Iranians. The only really interesting thing to come out of this, AFAIK, is the revelation that the Saudis asked the Americans to bomb Iran. Interesting.

What's going to be more entertaining is watching everyone apologise to each other and seeing all the awkward moments. When world leaders meet, it will be like it is when someone catches you saying something bad about them. No doubt there'll be some red faces at the UN over the next few weeks. I can't wait the see what happens between King Abdullah and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Completely Unrelated / A thought about quoting images
« on: 2010-10-29 23:48:57 »
Would it be possible for the forum software to simply take out image tags whenever they are in between quote tags, leaving only the image's url in the piece of quoted text? I imagine this is a little more complicated than wordfiltering, but if it could be done it would get rid of the quoting images problem very nicely indeed.

It-it-it's beautiful!

For those who haven't noticed, Windows has shitty font rendering. It's one of the few areas where OSX is definitely superior, and I suspect that it contributes to the perception of OSX being the better operating system. Fonts are everywhere, adn if one OS is better at rendering them, it will give the impression of being superior overall. What's worst is that Windows makes an especially good job of f*cking up one of the greatest fonts in existence:

I just got gdipp from here and it really makes things look amazing.

Apologies if I sound like a spambot, but I had to evangelise. ;D

I wonder whether that's the kind of music he listens to? :3

I've also found out that our little friend got banned from the Blender Artists forums. I haven't found the offending posts, but I noticed that someone called "Namssil" also got banned, and that person hated American "Barbie dolls" and thought that he would be the most successful man in the world, seeing other humans as ants.
