If you're using WinXP, try Compatibility Mode.  Believe it or not, you usually don't need any fix patches for this; all you need to do is set it to Win98 Compatibility Mode.  Worked on both of my computers.

Go to your FF7 directory and find the file ff7.exe

Right click on that file... and click on the "Properties" option.

Once in Properties, click the "Compatibility" tab... then tick the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and in the drop down box select "Windows 98 / Windows ME".

Click Apply and OK. Then double click ff7.exe to load up the game and hopefully your problem should be solved.

i've set both ff7 and ff7config to win95 compatibility mode, but i won't know if it worked until i get up to the submarine mini game.

how do i get this game to recognize my ati radeon 9500 ? ; i am unable to set the game on direct 3d hardware acceleration.

....what your not satisified with the problems you already have, and you want to add more?

Does the 8bit test say Pass or Fail?

If it says pass, and if ATI's 8 bit pallet is 100% correct, you can use the FF7config.exe from the TNT patch (don't check the Riva option), and give that a go.

If you get grid lines, or missing backgrounds....then your going to have to figure a way to disable the 8 bit pallet from the ATI driver, and that I don't know how to do.....if it was a Geforce, I would tell you to use Rivatuner, but Rivatuner isn't going to work with ATI. You'll have to find a third party ATI video driver tweaker on your own, if one even exists.

If you ever do find a way to disable the 8 bit pallet, then you use the FF7.exe and FF7config.exe from the TNT patch and "check the Riva option". The FF7.exe from the TNT patch will only work when the 8 bit pallet says, FAIL; and you can only use the FF7.exe from the TNT patch with the RIVA options checked.

8-bit paletted textures fails on both ff 7 and ff 8.

you're really confusing me.

how come ff 8 can be set on direct 3d hardware acceleration but ff 7 can't?

i have an ati card not a nvidia card, how do i fix the setting?

If you use ATI video card, it's necessary for use the patch for the nvidia TNT card (I have an Radeon 9500Pro an WinXP, it's work correctly with the nvidia patch and a modified qhimm's windows xp patch (it's modified patch don't work with FF7 french version))

...Because FF7 is older, and rely's more on older technology...such as the 8 bit thing. FF8 didn't rely on the 8 bit pallet in working.

And since you test says fail.
You need both files from the tnt patch.
Configure the FF7confg.exe. Select Direct 3d and check the Riva options....choose either TNT or the other one, it shouldn't matter. And then copy over the FF7.exe. With luck it'll work.
