I'm not really into AC style characters, but I'm still eager to see how it turns out. :)

General Discussion / Re: FF7 Remake Gameplay Reveal

The characters look okay, from a technical standpoint... I hate the style though. They should have made them more anime-like. Instead they opted for that awkward pseudo-realistic style which I started to hate ever since Advent Children came out.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that you just can't try to be 'realistic' but at the same time give these characters stupid anime haircuts and boyish faces. It just doesn't work together. You either go in fully realistic direction or make them look more anime-ish, there is no inbetween, it looks stupid especially on male characters. I can't take any male character seriously because of this. Barret is the only one that looks acceptable, but he was always meant to look very masculine in the first place.

Catalogs / Re: 7th Heaven Mod Requests - To Do List

Can we expect a release of the new catalog before the end of the year? That would be awesome.

These look incredible, I can't wait to see them ingame eventually. :)

The soundtrack is cast in stone anyway, so I don't mind if he doesn't return. I just hope they don't deviate too much from the original music and maybe orchestrate everything just for the sake of orchestrating... They need to keep the electronic/rock/etc. touches where it's appropriate.

That is actually the good 'ol Cloud, not the emo Cloud I was expecting. All gud!  :)

Never played any  of those games though...

I was just going to say the same... I'm really surprised they chose the good old 3D "anime" look for him.

Graphical / Re: Using Waifu2x to upscale FMVs?
« on: 2015-09-27 01:16:57 »
@Jahiliyyah
Compared to any previous effort to enhance the opening video, that's probably the best result I've seen so far.

Now if you combine it with the previous version from Youtube, just for the complete beginning, the "Original DVD..." text and the white fade at the end, it would be PERFECT.

You realize that the YouTube account Daniel Burke and DLPB are the same person, right?
Damn, you're right. xD

Not bad, I guess you used the original PSX video as a source?

You could take DLPB's opening.avi from his "Goblin's Bar" project (which uses parts of the infamous 1997 FFVII-Toshiba DVD) to get even better results. He uploaded the whole intro once but the file seems file is no longer available and will only be re-upped until the whole project is finished.

Someone uploaded it to Youtube though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyReFAfNRKM

You could try using the waifu filter on that. :)

In case this was overlooked:

One suggestion for the 2.0 release: Right now the Team Avalanche "Sweeper" model is only replacing the ones outside of Midgar, which are separate models from the ones appearing at the beginning of the game. I could fix this by renaming the "cv" files from the Team Avalanche Sweeper model to "av" files, as the "custom Sweepers" that appear outside of Midgar are really just a color variations of the normal Sweepers (as seen here). There's also the "Death Machine" variation (je) which should use Team Avalanche Model as well.

88
Thanks for the Midgar Zolom glitch report. I think I will take out that option completely in the next update since the projects on them have come to a halt. The game can't completely be run in 60 FPS because the modders have determined that the amount of worked needed to finish the animations is too large a scope for us.

If they have to do all that MANUALLY I can understand that of course, but I wonder why there isn't a way to just batch interpolate every single game animation to 60fps.

89
A way to import custom models would be nice, as the characters are pretty blocky.

90
I really hope this will be financially successful. It might change their mind on the direction they have planned for FF VII Remake...

91
Right now
Version 2.0 of the Catalog will be releasing soonish (don't ask when), and will feature some new mods. Once you download them, you have to Activate them and then click the Configure button to see all its options to choose from. The Catalog just displays the categories of mods, so you're not going to see them from there. I haven't counted them exact, but once Version 2.0 is out, I'd say there will be over 100 mod options to select.

That's great to hear. :)

That's funny, because when I switched to Windows 10 from 8.1 I just copied my old FF VII installation over, set the disk drive manually via regedit, mounted the dummy iso and I could play my previously modded installation without problems. xD

93
Golden Sun hands down, such an underrated series. I would argue if it had Gamecube/Wii graphics it could even compete with FF VII.

I has everything a great J-RPG needs: interesting story, very good graphics (for GBA standards), great soundtrack (by Motoi Sakuraba), lot's of side quests and side stories and much more.

Sticky?

Why? Mod development isn't stopping so there is no need to sticky a thread called "That's it guys"...

95
Why don't you use Reshade with the modded PC version? That's what I do and it looks awesome.

I hope one day Aali will add real time lighting and shadows to his renderer. Or maybe it will be possible in Q-Gears.

Absolutely agree with you guys, I simply loved the anime-style of the original. I've always imagined that in a remake, the field models of the characters would look just like this:

Just the characters from the original's FMVs, but only polished in HD (and with no further changes). Sadly, that isn't going to happen. That's especially irritating when considering that Nomura himself designed the characters of the original in the first place! By choosing a vastly different graphics style now, he is more or less betraying his own work. The realistic approach just doesn't seem to "fit" with the world of FF7, at least not for me.
A agree, but I wouldn't go as far as directly adapting those models since they, although they are CG models which were for the time quite detailed, still are not up to modern quality 3D standards (I'm obviously not talking about the art style) as you can see with Sephiroths neck, visible polygons everywhere which will be even more noticable in HD, visible bone joints, overall lack of detail, but maybe that's what you meant by polishing them in HD.

If they used those models (how they appeared in the ending sequence) as a basis, and then got them to look closer to the original character concept art maybe using a cel-shaded approach, THAT would be the perfect art style for me.

98
I'll guarantee you that even if the game is an abomination it will get 9 or 10 from most big review companies.  It's the fanbase that will render the ultimate judgement.

If that's the case Square Enix can kiss my butt forever...

99
C'mon, it's obvious. They cater to the trends.

But that's not the reason why FF VII has gotten so popular in the first place.

If they have to make it all trendy and hip I don't really mind, except for the fact that they would have wasted a great opportunity to make the true-to-the-original remake fans have been waiting (and asking) for. Wasn't that the main reason why they even considered a remake in the first place?? Why don't they just make the game for the fans then...

Making everything 'hip' and 'cinematic' and adapting 'modern game standards' wouldn't ruin the original for me personally, just as Advent Children doesn't ruin FF VII for me. I haven't watched it to this day, neither do I care about it in the slightest. I can just play the original version with lot's of mods installed, and it's as awesome as ever.

BUT it would for sure get ripped apart by critics and fans alike, which as we know can have huge implications on the financial success of a game. I guess in the end the financial success and critical reception of FFXV will decide, whether they keep that cinematic approach, the fagotty emo characters, sh1tty acting, 'modern' gameplay idiosyncrasies, etc. or if they go a little more back to their roots...

100
I didn't want an FF7 remake to fall victim to that - but because of Nomura stylistic choices, and his obsession with making the graphics (of an anime styled game...) more realistic, that's probably what's going to happen.

This is exactly the reason why I hate the way the characters look in FF XV. I mean look at this:

Gay Emo smoothly seamless skin Cloud

Badass Anime Cloud

Why they simply can't just adapt the style of the original artworks and apply that to 3D models is beyond me...
