guys i got the game working on x64 windows 7 on a laptop.

to the other guy who got trouble with midi and this also applies to vista users and this will also fix the silent sound fmv problem, install the loopbe1 midi app free version.

Then mute it in the system tray.

Then run ff7config and select loopbe as the midi device.

when in the game midi volume will be unavailable this is fine.

this laptop has some crappy soundcard so midi sucked anyway I then installed ff7music app and using psx psf music files.

now I have the game running no crashes etc but the sound is a bit weird, eg. I loaded up a save so I can test safer sephiroth battle, I got the sweet choir one winged angel and sounds are very low in the battle, I can barely hear sound affects yet the music is very audible, in most battles the sound is quieter than when out of battle eg. the sound affects on menu outside of battle are louder than sound affects in battle so something is toggling the volume. with it going to almost mute on safer seph battle. is odd when you consider mp3 and game sounds should be on same volume control?

Problem same as listed here.

Some details.

opening movie plays with sound.
sound is ok in game fights etc. and music.
after escaping first reactor and movie plays when bomb explodes all sound dies.
there is no sound at all until I go to next screen where meet aeris when sound comes back, even sound in menu stops.
I am not using ff7 music patch.
I have no codecs installed other than truemotion and whatever codecs come with windows, no ffdshow etc.

any help is appreciated thanks, googling etc. has only found others with same problem but no solution.

nice, my main gripe with the game is bosses tend to be too easy with a few exceptions.

Its not just on transition I think my ff7 just crashed in the middle of a battle and I immediatly googled the error and found this thread.

Last night I played all the way through midgar and then left ff7 running and turned my monitor off, it was at 18 hours game time no crashes whatsoever, today after I had quit it to do some work on the pc and reloaded the game after about an hour I got the crash, I am hoping I remembered to save after I went through the tifa and cloud history cutscenes :(

I believe this may be related to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth which has a lot of hits in google in relation to crashing on various games so now I have just enabled my SB XIFI synth again in ff7config and will see if the game is better.  I did choose Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth as it enabled music volume control in the game and worked with eax affects.

here is what I have noticed (pc version)

Getting your chocobos higher class increases chance up to class A (100% chance of green/blue/black/gold chocobo)

On a S class chocobo I have 0% success rate and I put this down to chocobo exhaustion heh, you guys all play the psx version?

I found the demon wall easy also, its a real shame about the bosses I end up trying to make the fight last by delibateraly using weak moves but still win easily.

I wish they made their stats dependant on your party's hp level so if you had a powerful party then in turn the bosses become powerful.

I think under 20 hours is possible problem been is the normal bosses in the game are too weak, so there is no need to do any real levelling up to get through the game.  The only bosses that pose any challenge is the secret bosses and perhaps sephiroth at the end.

hmm I always have my strongest combination of materia equuiped to my currently selected characters so neither lost monster, carry armour or the demons gate got me, in fact demon gate is very weak in my book, but my 1st time playing the game I think dyne did get me as my party is strong as a whole but barret had weak points when on his own.

is it me or are the bosses too easy, I tend to do extra fighting which probably puts me at higher level then the average person but I expect bosses to pose a challenge, and going through the game I feel there is only a few that have a chance of killing me.

1 - There hps are way too low I think they should be at least 4x what they are

2 - More of them need to have confusion making it a lot tougher

3 - They should be stronger if character level is higher

Is it possible to make an editor that allows editing of monster stats, so I could make the game tougher for myself, I think the normal fights are ok because they cannot be too hard otherwise leveling up would be a bitch, but the bosses need to be tough enough so anyone not levelled up is a goner.

ok thanks for your reply it is confusing, I think I know how I managed a base damage of 9999, if you have a hp plus eqquiped during the earlier levels of the character then he benefits from increased growth eg.

level 30 character
hp 3000 + level 1 hp plus = hp 3300
gets to level 31 his hp lets say normally goes up 180 so now
hp 3180 but if hp plus equipped then rise is 198 taking base to 3198 then adds 10% still so 3498 but if the materia was removed the character still has higher hp then normal.  I am sure this is how I managed 9999 without hp plus.

I agree with you on the attack % etc. but not sure about the critical hit chance when above 100%, if I equip a 255% weapon then in theory every hit should be a critical hit but isn't, however it does make deathblow always hit critical.

sorry if info is wrong on the 1.02 exe but the sp4 info is correct, XP has built in compatibility fixes for older games and apps and these were introduced to windows 2000 when sp3 was released.

I still stick by my claim that anyone with a geforce type card will not need to use qfixapp if they either have windows xp or windows 2000 sp4.

Also you will find the faq needs updating as people are finding out as it is indeed for an old version that existed pre windows 2000 sp2 and users are getting confused.

Dont attack me, there is no 1 fix for all users, I was giving advice to people with similiar hardware to me I did state that owners of other gfx cards I dont know what their solution is but only for geforce owners.

you need to get a usb powered hub i guess,

I did some investigation and now know why people trying the qfixapp have no success, its because 2k sp3 and sp4 have act fixes built in thats why m$ removed the old act apps, so if anyone wants to use the old act then they must make sure not use sp3 or later.

I am going to post info to try and help others to get their ff7's working, really anyone asking for help needs to post graphics card, driver version installed, directx version and os version and wether or not using any patches.

geforce2 pro
45.24 detonators drivers
win xp sp1
directx 8
1.02 config for ff7 and chocobo patch

Ok well few things I dont get

"After two Hero Drinks, Barret has 408 Str and Spr. His base damage is thus 19338. Angermax does 1/2 of Base Damage (9669), and Emerald Weapon has 180 Def, so that drops the damage to 5877 to 6269 per hit of Angermax."

spr=spirit i think

so spirit affects attack damage? and where did this 19338 figure come from heh.

Now I know from earlier on in the game that +1 defense point deducts 1 damage cause I had 1 character with 5 more defense than cloud and he took 5 less damage so I assumed the most damage possible you can deduct from a attack is 255 and defense % was much more effective.  But looking at these figures its stating 180 defence is the equivalent to 5877 ???, also I dont know how the luck was worked out, because I know late game my characters especially with their ultimate weapons tend to get critical hit every 3 to 4 attacks at least even when in fury mode but have luck nowhere near 255, I always thought accuracy was down to the attack %.

I am probably wrong on all this but things I want to know are.

What does luck actually do
What does spirit do(defense v magic attacks?)
How do you work out attack damage
What does attack% do, I am fairly sure defense % cause enemy to miss % of times because with defense % of 50 enemy misses an awful lot.


Also like to add 9999 hp can be achieved without hp plus because barret had no magic materia on him so had no penalties on his hp bar.

could always dig up an old 3d grapics card voodoo or something and use that to play, not ideal I know but it seems new ati cards have trouble playing the game.

I think you got no chance of d3d with that card, I would try and getting it to work in software mode and that patch wont do it so use the normal files and try the compatibility kit that others suggest.

Hmm I have to disagree, it must depend on the hardware in the machine but I have a geforce 2 pro.

I do this

1 - Install ff7 full install
2 - use the fixed configuration exe rivatnt nvidia version
3 - dont tick the nvidia box and just select hardware graphics and save
4 - apply the chocobo patch
5 - play the game

issues doing this, only 2 so far, the bike scene in midgar is super fast and the snowboard scene crashes(had to use software graaphics) rest of game works fine.

so if anyone has simliar hardware to me i reccomend my method, I didnt use any qfixapp etc.

hmmm pc has the 1 pause on the kotr but I bet psx has many pauses when it has to load of the cd, whilst pc caches on hd(full installation)
