winmm.dll error Please Help :(
« on: 2006-06-02 19:01:23 »
Hey all

Im about 55 hours into the game, ive reached disc 3, im just messing around at the battle square at the mo to get w-summon.

ANYWAYS

Ive got a little problem, and its irritating the hell outta me, and i dunno how to fix it. I know people have posted about this before, but from searching these forums, im yet to find anyone who can solve it.

Basically, at the end of random battles, just as the fanfare music would begin, my screen cuts to black for a few seconds, and then goes to the desktop where i get an error in "winmm.dll"

It happens quite regularly now, alot more than it used to. It has happened once at the chocobo races, and its now beginning to happen in battle square, when it never used to.

Is there a cure for this little error, I want to make the most out of the game, but i cant if i keep having stupid random crashes after most battles.

My specs are:

Windows XP Home SP2
AMD Athlon XP3200+ Barton 2.2ghz
1024mb pc3200 ddr400 corsair
nVidia Geforce 6800LE 128mb
120gb HDD
MSI K7N2 nForce2 400mhz mobo

During disc 1 and the beginning of disc 2, i got the crashes, but not very often. Recently though, during the majority of disc 2 and now on disc 3, im getting them more frequently.

Its wierd because, I never used to get these crashes at battle square, I got 32000 and got omnislash by fighting about 15 to 20 battles and it didnt crash once. Now im after w-summon, its crashing almost everytime with this winmm.dll

I tried replacing the file, but everytime i tried it just said "file in use"

Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers all

roses and razors,

What exactly is the error message? Knowing what is wrong usually makes it easier to fix.  :-P

i dont know whether it will help anyone

but i run ff7 using my nvidia synthesiser as opposed to the microsoft one (i choose this setting in ff7config)

being an audio related issue (being winmm.dll) i figured this info might be of use to gaining a bug fix ?

This problem has been posted before, and I tracked down the possible bug, but I can't promise that I'll find a way to fix it (and yes, it's a problem with sound).

This is a common error when using FF7music though I'm not entirely sure it's related to that particular program as it could be an issue with FF7's MIDI implementation which is still processed even if FF7music is installed.  It only seems to happen when the music changes.  I've personally noticed it happening more often when switching from battle to fanfair or anything to battle.  This could be coincidence though since these are the two most commonly used songs in the game.

Hope this helps in tracking down the cause.

yeh thats when i get it mostly, end of battle to fanfare music

sucks, hopefully someone can get a fix for this, it would be alot nicer to be able to battle as often as possible without the worry of knowing the game will crash. Tthats why i dont battle as often as i did when i played the game on ps1 :(

Its not just on transition I think my ff7 just crashed in the middle of a battle and I immediatly googled the error and found this thread.

Last night I played all the way through midgar and then left ff7 running and turned my monitor off, it was at 18 hours game time no crashes whatsoever, today after I had quit it to do some work on the pc and reloaded the game after about an hour I got the crash, I am hoping I remembered to save after I went through the tifa and cloud history cutscenes :(

I believe this may be related to Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth which has a lot of hits in google in relation to crashing on various games so now I have just enabled my SB XIFI synth again in ff7config and will see if the game is better.  I did choose Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth as it enabled music volume control in the game and worked with eax affects.
