7th Heaven doesn't recognize ISO
« on: 2019-11-19 21:38:50 »
Back in July I installed 7th Heaven and was able to get FF7 running with no problems, I was even able to record gameplay of it for a youtube video I made around that time. Just recently I wanted to actually start playing the game, but for some reason 7th Heaven does not recognize that the FF7DISC1.ISO has been mounted to the F drive and asks me to insert the game disc. I'd rather not go through the trouble of uninstalling and re-installing everything again, especially since I got it working before, is there a step I am missing or forgetting?

7H isn't what looks for the disc, the game itself does.  What likely happened between then and now is that the letters changed (e.g. when you installed over summer, it was mounted at E, but now it's F).  You can look at FF7_GC.log to see where the game thinks the CD lives, or you can re-run the converter to just overwrite what was, and tell it what now is.

I looked it up and it turns out it was looking for the G drive, so I changed F to G. I thought that would've been it, but now when I try to launch the game, it still doesn't do anything. There's a black screen for a second like it's about the open the game, but nothing happens.

Re-run the game converter, and select the Overwrite option. Usually works most of the time.

Indeed... Windows has almost certainly patched since your last run, and Windows Updates are 99% of the time going to break the registry keys needed to make FF7 and 7H function.  Your new symptoms are dead-on for that, and conversion+overwrite is the cure.

How do I use the game converter again? When I tried to use the .exe file, it just said "access denied" and I had to close it Do I need to open it in a specific folder? Sorry, I am not super tech savvy and it was months ago when I did the process so I forgot most of the steps.

The converter must be run as admin, and FF7 itself should not be installed in any variant of the \Program Files\ folder.

Alright, so I used the gameconverter and the game works!.... sort of. So I noticed right away that the font didnt look right for some reason. Then I noticed there were sound effects, but no music and whenever the game tried to open a dialogue box. the game crashes.

Post your your 7H profile (click the 'Profile Details' button, then ctrl-a to select all, ctrl-c to copy to clipboard, then ctrl-v in a reply window here to paste), and a screen shot of your general settings page.  I'm suspecting either a bad file path, or conflicting mods.

Oy there's a lot going on there... so here's what sticks out to me:

Remako_HD_Graphics_Mod_BETA_0.1 - This is both outdated and in the wrong place with respect to load order.  If you're dead set on Remako, get the current builds from CaptRobau's blog.  The new files are also split up and named in a way that makes their proper load slot clearer.  Alternatively, add Strife's "Mods of the Round" catalog to get easy loading of newer (and IMHO better) options.

Animations - Can break things, especially when combined with New Threat or Reunion (which DLPB just released a massive update for earlier today, but is incompatible with the 7H ecosystem)

Gameplay - I personally don't use anything here, but since it affects things at the EXE level, can never be ruled out as being part of the reason for crashes.

Reunion - The extant catalog has a VERY old version of this (R03).  If you want to keep it, you must change the exe file in 7H's "General Settings' window to ff7_bc.exe.  Otherwise instability and graphics glitches will rule the day.  As noted, since this requires an alternative exe file, pairing it with the 'Animations' and 'Gameplay' mods can result in instability and crashes.

Are you using the correct version of the game converter specifically for 7H? There's 2 versions out there. One doesn't work for 7H. Get it from step 1 in this link: https://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15520.0

Iam not deadset on Remako specifically, I simply want to clean up the backgrounds so they don't have that pixelated/blurry look to them.

Alright I'll remove animations.

I'll remove this too

I'd rather have the most up to date version of Reunion so I'll try and fix this. In fact this is the reason why I wanted to mod FF7 in the first place, because I dislike the original translation and I wanted to play the game with a translation that was more true to the original intent of the Japanese version, rather than the rushed one we got.

I am at work atm so I'll update when I get home and see what I was able to fix.

Ok, then you'll want to uninstall and wipe everything you've done so far, perhaps run the reg key cleaning tool linked to in this thread to be sure, then re-install from scratch and download the new hotness from here instead.  Note that I although I'm actively seeding, I haven't actually had the chance to try it out yet, so I don't know what DLPB has included in the base install, or if any of the up-scale authors (satsuki being my favorite) have converted their stuff from IRO format to make it compatible with R06 yet.

It's disheartening to have to do it from scratch, but I might aswell I guess. Do I install Reunion first before 7th Heaven?

You don't install 7H at all if you're going to use the current version of Reunion.  The frameworks are incompatible.

You've joined us in a period of transition ;)  Reunion version R05c does work (after some massaging) with 7H, provided only graphics and sound mods are used.  Anything that touches the exe file would still break.  DLPB has completely reworked a ton of things in R06, including the entire modding framework, and there are going to be teething pains.  I personally think it's a very elegant solution for mod authors, but in its current form is limiting for an end user.  Meanwhile on the 7H side, the current catalog (v2.3) is really long in the tooth.  EQ2Alyza is working furiously to finish v3, but it's an incredibly painful thing making sure all the pieces fit together reasonably well (and those that don't are made clear in the tutorial), that mods aren't stomping on each others' toes, load orders are sorted through, that sort of stuff.  That's why strife98 came up with Mods of the Round... a quick supplemental catalog so people could easily apply some of the new stuff and get their fix while the more polished v3 is completed.

Hm, okay so it sounds like I should either use R05c and try to get it working as best as I can, or I should wait a bit for ver.3 to finish before I start replaying the game.

Up to you... DLPB took down his link to R05c, but this being the internet and all, I'm sure there are copies floating around.  Catalog v3 isn't going to have anything Reunion-related in it, again because of the framework incompatibility.

By the way, when I download a background mod, where exactly should that mod be placed on the list as to not conflict with other mods?

7H mod load order is covered in the tutorial.  Note that if you do find R05c, that you should NOT also install the catalog version of Reunion, or use the _bc.exe file (the R05c installer will modify the standard ff7.exe for you).

Is there a guide I can look up that explains  how to use RO5c in conjunction with 7th Heaven?
