ORIGINAL FF7 MENU OVERHAUL !!
« on: 2014-03-18 08:51:15 »
Hi all,

First of all, I'd like to thank all people here for the great job they are doing.
Keep doing amazing mods !

Now, let's talk about what brings me here :

To make life easier, a picture is worth a thousand words.

As you can see in the pictures, it's the original FF7 menu which has been overhauled and I really appreciate it !
Actually I installed many mods (Reunion, Menu Overhaul, Avalanche GUI 2.0.8, Avalanche High Res,...) but can't remember how I got that exactly.

When I first time saw Menu Overhaul, I enjoyed FF9 and FF10 menu but I was like "So bad there isnt original FF7 menu overhauled..."
And yesterday, by manipulating files (really cant remember what I did exactly), I had it !! I was so happy ! :D :D :D
You'll notice that main menu was old style but battle menu was overhauled.
In field, it was the Menu Overhaul dialogue boxes.
However, some bugs appeared as you can see in battle menu (bad position HP/MP logo, sign + instead of red arrow in magic menu,no slash between current HP and MaxHP, but the limit bar ATB bar and barrier bar were filling corectly)

I dont know how I can have it properly.
What should I do ?

Thanks all for your help !

You need to hex edit the exe... either using a hex editor, or using DLPB Tools using plain text files.  Either way, you will need to know how to hex edit.

Are you using Bootleg to install your mods? I believe you can get those menus by leaving the Avalanche and  MO options unchecked, and only using the New Battle Interface, Transparent Dialogs, and Fancy Transparency optoins in Bootloader Configure. Don't quote me on that though. Try testing that out yourself.

Damn hex editing.... :'(

I just learned how to save a file in Word haha   :-D

A few months ago, I wanted to modify a text in ff7.exe but Touphscript wasn't working on my ff7.exe so I was told to learn hex editing.
I spent hours trying to understand how hex editors were working...
I was and I'm still completely lost :s

I gave it a try once again, but as I expected, I failed...

Here are some screenshots representing the changes I want to bring.

http://www.heberger-image.fr/images/56088_s1.png.html
http://www.heberger-image.fr/images/43096_s2.png.html
http://www.heberger-image.fr/images/67927_s3.png.html
and of course the FF7 overhauled battle menu ^^

The only real important change is in 1st screenshot : I need enough space to put french words (Objets, Situation, Equipement, Limit Break,...)

I'll try again after dinner.

Any help is welcomed.

Thanks for your answers.

@EQ2Alyza: No I didn't use Bootleg. However, I may have used two mods included in Bootleg : Avalache GUI 2.0.8 and Avalanche HighRes.
As I said, I installed and uninstalled many mods and I got confused.
I'll try what you advised me. Thanks for the help. :)

@sunz: Man, it was amazing during battles ! Menu overhauled with pure FF7 spirit !! :-D

EDIT 18 March 2014 20h25 : WTf hex editing is so a pain in the a.. :D

EDIT 18 March 2014 22h05 : I succeeded to have it back but it's still not proper.
How did I do ?
Well, I installed FF7 2012 release in D:\Games\Final Fantasy VII and used GameConverter.
Then, I copyed/pasted my FF7 folder next to the original so I had two FF7 folders :
Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII - Copy.
Eventually, I installed MO.exe targetting the original folder but launched ff7.exe from the clone folder.
Now, with that, you'll have basically the same results I had : old main menu but battle menu overhauled.
I want so badly that menu :D

It's not as difficult as it first seems...  esp just moving the menu parts.  If you install the documentation from Reunion, 95% of the values and addresses are there.

Hi foubou

To my knowledge, the Avalanche High Res manipulates the files 'battle.lgp', 'magic.lgp', 'menu_us.lgp' and 'world_us.lgp'.
After you've used my Game Converter 'menu_us.lgp' and 'world_us.lgp' are already in '[gamedir]\BackupGC\data\...\' folders included.
You can 'battle.lgp' and 'magic.lgp' also copy there, then you have backed up the original files.
You can also save a copy of the unmodified ff7.exe there.
Similarly Avalanche High Res creates a subfolder in the folder 'mods', which is also entered in the 'ff7_opengl.cgf'.

The old Menu Overhaul (mo.exe) makes changes in many files, including the ff7.exe.
There is also a subfolder in the folder 'mods' created.
Aalis driver handles only one subfolder there.
You have all the subfolders in the folder 'mods' move together to one folder, so that the various modifications can be used.
What changes to the ff7.exe is responsible for what part of the menu, I can not say unfortunately.
The documentation is unfortunately only for people who can assembler, hex editing is not enough there.
When you start the ff7.exe from your copy, you make all the changes on ff7.exe useless, this one is the unmodified ff7.exe.

The Menu Overhaul from the Reunion package will probably be similar to the 'mo.exe'.

The use of one piece of the Menu Overhaul will probably not be possible without experienced expertise.

Hey all,

Ok so I tried again that hex editing thing.
I don't really know what I am doing, even with the documentation...
And now you are talking about assembling !

How much time do you think it would take to someone who knows what he is doing ?

@Kompass63 : Great job with the GameConverter ;)

Thanks all for the help.

What I forgot to mention.
The Reunion deletes during installation everything in the folder "HEXT_in", unfortunately also the file "FF7exe-french-translation.txt".
This file contains the French text for the English ff7.exe.

You should back up this file before Reunion somewhere and Paste after again, then the ff7.exe is again in French.

I installed (and will always install) the game in English, even after the conversion because when I once converted it into French, I wasn't able to use TouphScript anymore. And original french translation sucked as hell.

You are right, after conversion,  the french texts are in the file FF7exe-french-translation.txt.But it didn't work when I tried to modify them.
Apparently, I need to change the values to change the texts and I don't understand how it works.

That's why I installed in full engish and then translated with appropriate tools (touphscript, Teioh, remplacing the scene.bin by the french one....)

But maybe I did something wrong, in which case any help is welcomed :)

TouphScript_v1.3.0 works with English, French, German and Spanish files, only the ff7.exe must be the English version.
Also the additional patches only work with the English files, but you can change the "touphscript.ini" to disable this patches ( eg 'ealin_2 = 0' ).

With my Game Converter, the easiest way.
This also installs the French files as the English ff7.exe (or TS) wants them, assuming, your Steam version is the French.

Only the "0_ff7.exe.txt" is now available in English, and here it is tricky.
One can indeed translate line by line into French, but some lines may only have a certain length.
Even that is not fully coincide with the keyboard layout.

I'm just about to revise FF7exe-french-translation.txt when I'm done, you'll get it for testing.
The real point is actually the numbers there, all with a { in front is not used (it's a comment).

Actually the admin on ff7.fr is doing a "Beacause" patch in correct French : it is called Néo-Midgar. Many players are awaiting it, including me. :)
I'll probably use it when he releases it but it may take him 1 or 2 months to finish it.

Meanwhile, I'll have a look to french files of your next converter release. :)

We've had such a lack of translation support, so that's excellent news on the French translation. Hopefully it stays true enough to the script.

It would be better to have 2 or 3 persons for the project. One main translator for the story and the main characters and two translators for everything around, like NPCs, objects, weapons,... you know all this nasty stuff. There should be also some proof readers.
I would like to translate 'Beacause' in to German, too, but I'm currently busy with modeling and learning to create textures.

Very important! If you not already have done it, ask DLPB for Luksy's original translation. They contain some additional info's and my change some parts for the French translation.

@EQ2Alyza :

Original french translation was awful. I needed to check websites to understand some parts of main story.
If you guys need some help with the french game (for whatever you may need with it), I'll be glad to help :)

@Kaldarasha :

He wasn't alone every time of the translation, he had support.
Now he just has to check that everything is fine (syntax, orthograph, spelling,...).
Some of his friends will do all the testing part when he finishes the patch.
The patch for PC and PSX will be programmed by myst6re.

It's great news you decided to do a German translation, I wish you good luck. :)
Your Barret looks nice...but not finished ! ;)
Do you plan to rework his weapons too ?
