I was talking of patching the orchestral DLS to make it ready to be inserted into my DLS. It means, that last step remains to be done, where you need to download "Awave Studio", open my DLS, merge with the orch. DLS, save as DLS Level 1. That's in fact pretty easy anyway. Just a link to the "Awave" site with a "see instructions within the zip" note would be needed on FFSF's orchestral DLS section.

and btw, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE!!!

2
Of course! (and I didn't think of that at first :) )
and it would probably weight only some Kb's because no new samples are added.

3
If Aaron have enough space for an aditionnal 20Mb or something, . . . probably yes. And that would make an alternate download for people who want to merge it with the DLS (or any other sf). But I think it would be a good idea to give a break to Aaron for now, at least until next year.

Aaron: Everything is uploaded. :) I splitted the full package with winrar for the same reason as previously. But now you'll need at least winrar 3.0 to extract the big zip, because it uses a new compression engine (it's now 2.9 instead of 2.0). So after everything is uploaded to FFSF, you can announce that the full zip package with the updated previews are uploaded (and remove the "(1.29)" after "SGT package" since everything will be for v1.29 then). Do it when you can, you don't have to urge.    .And thank you again for your help to keep alive FFSF.

Smurgen: Yeah, that DLS can also be useful for people who don't have FF8 for PC. You don't have it, right, or you don't play anymore? just curious . . .  and sorry for my english ignorance but, what means "spiffy"?

KojiroTakenashi: Are you talking about "The Extreme"'s electric guitar? And what is the title of the song you heard the "similar to FF8" one?
I'll try to find a mp3 of that song at least so I can hear it. But I dunno if I can find the CD or someone with the CD at first and dunno if it is correct to borrow samples from a copyrighted game to another one from a different company in addition. Anyway let's hear it first.  :P  (do you know a site where I can get a mp3 of that song?)

Goku7: Yeah, the boss theme now has the wah-wah effect and the new guitar assignment you sent me, except for the last part of the song, because the guitar needs to fade out which I didn't have the time to finish in time for v1.39. Anyway, should I do it for v1.40 or it's ok right now?

Sure you can, but first you'll need to edit the orchestral dls and the included sgt's with DirectMusic Producer.
I can explain:

- First, insert the orchestral dls + every sgt's except "024s-march1.sgt"  since this one isn't orchestral (makes 5 sgts). (right-click "Project1", insert)
- Create a new DLS Collection. (right-click "Project1", new..., choose "DLS Collection")
- Copy and paste into that new DLS, from the orchestral DLS, the following instruments: "Don't Be Afraid: 0,1,0", "Man With the Machine Gun: 0,1,2", "Helicopter: 0,0,125". (Helicopter contains "Balamb Garden" and "Blue Fields" orchestral tracks)
- From the new DLS, change the bank and preset assignment to something else since they're conflicting with instruments from my DLS. Let say 100,100,0 for "Don't Be Afraid", 100,100,1 for "Man With the Machine Gun" and 100,100,2 for "Helicopter" to make sure they will never interfere. Double-click on each and change those three numbers situated just below the piano roll that appears on the right (named MSB, LSB, Patch).
- Since the instrument's position has changed, you'll need to reassign the instruments from the SGTs. Double-click on the sgt to reveal the title. Double-click on that title. To the right on the last row, double-click "Band1" ("Band2 for "012s-kani.sgt"). Double-click on each instrument, choosing the right one.
- You can also take the opportunity to fix the volume instability if you know DM Producer well enough.
- Save every SGTs and the new clean and compatible DLS somewhere on your hard drive (right-click, save as).
- Delete everything from DirectMusic Producer, since those are only copies of what you inserted at first and close it. But make sure you saved them somewhere else ("save as") not over ("save"). They will enter the recycle bin.
- Browse to the directory you saved the files and rename the ".sgp" files to ".sgt" and ".dlp" to ".dls".
- AT THAT POINT YOU CAN MAKE A BACKUP OF THOSE FILES READY TO BE MERGED WITH MY DLS (except "024s-march1.sgt" which isn't needed).
- To merge both DLS's, open my DLS with Awave. In the "File" menu, click "Merge files...", browse to the new compatible orchestral DLS and save the new merged DLS as "FF8.DLS" directly to the "dmusic" folder. Don't forget to save it as a DLS Level 1.
- Also copy the modified SGTs (or only those you want orchestrated) into the "dmusic" folder.

Then everything should work perfectly as I just tried it. :)
I hope I explained it well... let me know if something's wrong or doesn't work.

Thanks!
So now, I've just uploaded the SGTs package for v1.39.
You should add "v1.39" in parentheses just after "SGTs package" just so everyone know it's not for v1.36, and that until the full package of v1.39 is uploaded of course. I don't think it needs to be added into the news, it will only when everything missing will be uploaded (should be december 26 or 27).

7
Ok, I've uploaded the patch, so you can add it to the site mentionning that the full package, the MP3 Previews and the FFAddon file will be uploaded a few days after Christmas (maybe the day after). You know, my upload speed is only 4kb/s.  :-?  But I can upload the FFAddon file tomorrow.

Do not transfer the currently uploaded FFAddon file (ff8dls_sgts.zip), it doesn't work with the configurator because winrar 3.00 uses a different compression not compatible with it. Fortunately, I've found a previous version of winrar and recompressed the ffaddon file. I could not upload it because you probably have turned off your computer now.

BTW, Happy Christmas everyone!  :)

Since Christmas is in a few days, I'm releasing a new version further more closer to the PSX and more accurate. That version will probably be the last one before the final version (1.40), unless I find more samples.

Aaron, do you think you will have some time to upload it to the site?
It should be uploaded to your ftp tomorrow. (at least the patch)

EDIT: In case someone is new here, you can get the files at FFSF.

Hmm, what was I thinking ... adding a delay will make the music finish later and it's already finishing a little too late (at least every time I checked the whole preopening). That means the preopening images are changing a little too fast (maybe the fades)... anyway. I was so tired.
But I remember there's already a little half second delay in the midi, if I remove that, it will finish a little earlier.

Yeah, maybe it's a little off (I did suspected this earlier but wasn't so sure because I never saw the preopening on the PSX). Adding a 2-3 seconds delay to the midi should fix that, but is there a delay before the preopening start on the PSX, right after the Squaresoft logo?

And I'll need to know when, in the song, exactly does the FF logo appear?
Is it supposed to start appearing when the first of the four last notes is playing?

BTW, what was making the chocobo midi not playing?

Hi there!
I'm currently searching for differences in midis structure and have found many that I hadn't noticed until then. Among them are tempo not changing at the right time (if it needs to). About the preopening clip, that problem does not occur. It last exactly the same amount of time than the OST (I even listened to both in perfect sync and they finished exactly at the same time). So it may be GRAPHICALLY too slow or too fast... maybe... at least on your computer... What version of directx is installed on your comp? (I can only confirm it works as on my computer with directx 8.0 at least because I modified every midis with DirectX 8.0 release of DirectMusic Producer and cannot try it with directx 7.0.) About the chocobo, does it play in Dag's configurator? (file is "064s-choco.sgt")

BTW, I'll soon release a new version of the DLS (before Christmas for sure). Most songs have been improved and have tempo or notes corrected!

BTW, me and Goku7 aren't the same person. I just had that impression from some of your latest posts below. Maybe you didn't checked our username from our posts... anyway I was just wondering.  Just to prevent misunderstanding in the future (everything went perfect as of now).

I uploaded the improved tracks v2.1 with the other files, it's called "ff8fixes_original.zip". I can reupload it just in case...

Yeah, I only fixed the links and clean html a little (only internally and nothing big, mostly broken lines like those for the patches and previews which can be easily repaired anyway, so it's not worth the trouble of merging, finally).

Oh, and about Goku7's files, He told me he would like if you can wait for his rev2 patch before releasing his improved tracks v2.1 to release both at the same time. But they can also be released separately if v2.1 is already uploaded.

Aaron: I've just uploaded the updated download page to the upload folder.

Aaron: I have uploaded everything I mentioned in my earlier post. They're in the upload directory so you can know exactly what are the files I uploaded, instead of merging them directly into the ffsf folder. I also have edited the download page but haven't been able to upload it cause your computer is off right now. I'll upload it tomorrow as soon as I can.

So the last missing file I can provide, which is in fact an update, is Joel's Revision 2 of the original DLS. He may have to send you the file directly because I can't receive it (it's a little too big for hotmail).

And finally, the main page will need to be updated with news about Joel's updated "improved tracks v2.1" and Joel's new "Revision 2 patch for the original DLS" (he may want to tell you what to mention about that new patch).

I have the original untouched download page and have access to every other files from prohosting so you can check how they were. I though it may help you. And maybe you'll want to try the counters with the '.pl' files and the '.cnt' files which contain the counter's value for each download (though they've all been reset). Those '.pl' and '.cnt' files need to have permission set to 'chmod 755'. If perl is supported, it should work, though maybe you'll need to edit the first line of those '.pl' files...

I can start with emailing you the html's and anything related to the counters, and if you need anything else from prohosting (though I can see you have every images and prohosting's downloads) just ask me.

I can also upload the mp3's for my DLS, Joel's mp3s and his updated files, and Jared's sgt's package tomorrow, and Sunday (since my upload speed is so slow), I'll upload v1.36 of the DLS to replace v1.35 (to make it simpler for first time downloaders who won't have to download a patch). I think I'll split it in multiple files with winrar to make sure I won't have to restart...

Then the only files left would be Ficedula's updated configurator, the orchestral DLS, Jared's soundfont with his mp3s, Jari's Timber v1.1.
And for a SFPack link, I think we can use this one: http://www.personalcopy.com/sfpack.htm from Personal Copy or even a direct link if it's possible and personalcopy's webmaster agree.

EDIT: I emailed you the prohosting's files to your hotmail account.

Hi everyone, I'm still here! :)

Looks like FFSF will resurrect, great! And I planned to complete a final version of the DLS (v1.40). It's not ready yet, but at least planned (and in process).

Now, I'm wondering if we could update the way we were used to? I mean, when I have something to update, I can upload the file directly to the site (Aaron's ftp) including the main and download page (taking care of downloading them each time to make sure I have the latest (I won't be the only one to take care of the html I guess). So Aaron, can you tell us about what you think would be the best method to update FFSF? Do you agree about directly editing the site?  ... And we have to forget prohosting (cannot upload anymore).

And Joel, sorry for my late reply to your email, I just don't check very often that address these days, but now that FFSF is resurrecting, that will change. You can resend your last version to me and once everything is set about the update process of FFSF, I'll verify if everything is okay and upload it.

BTW, I just redirected FFSF  :P

EDIT:
Aaron: I would upload any updates directly to your computer not directly to the site I guess ... then it would be good to keep a copy of the updated htmls (main and download) in your computer's upload directory so if any FFSF members have something to update, those pages would be the ones to edit. Or maybe you have a better idea, do you?
And btw, thanks for hosting FFSF, and welcome as a new FFSF member

Dag, where should I upload the MP3 previews of the FF9 Mod?
legacy or prohosting?

22
Yeah, it probably still needs some tweaking since I don't have the original MP3s from the PSX to compare.

BTW is there someone who knows where to get FF9 MP3s?

Also, you may notice that Saw Wave (used in The Battle) needs to be fine tuned. Because it was not used by any FF8 music in v1.35, I never took care of fine tuning it. So, since it's a modification to be made on the DLS, it will be done in v1.36 (soon to be released).   :)

I'm also interested in trying it out.
(you can send it at  [email protected] )

Then, if you mind, I can check and recommend some changes to make it compatible with the DLS I enhanced. What do you think?

That would make one version for the original DLS which includes the two ff9 songs + the sgts you fixed (fixed in notation and volume I presume), and another version for my DLS which would include only the two ff9 songs since the other songs within v1.35 are all fixed (or tell me if I forgot something).

try lowering gamma correction from "display properties". That should help a lot with the bad colors.
