General Discussion / Re: FF14 panned by critics and users

i think they will eventually start making only online final fantasies.

that's because there is more money to be made there. who cares about fans of singleplayer when you can earn much more on mmorpg no-lifes?

well, i'm a geek and my girlfriend loves me, so, let there be hope for suckers like me :P
same here. well, maybe. i'm not sure i belong with the geeks.

79
that could be the reason. and that self-pity too.

i'd better not make this topic unnecessarily tall from now on, cutting the quotes as they got pretty big now in the meantime.

most women would not want a geek. that's because they tend to judge men by their attractiveness and social behavior.

also geeks give off a bit of a childish impression, and that doesn't help much.

It means you're one step away from being loved. To attain that status, you need to give up your life.
Don't be fooled. I had no life long before this forum acknowledged that fact.

Does that mean I'm already loved, but the forum software doesn't acknowledge that yet, or am I just trying to flatter myself
you are trying to make a forum love you. how strange is that?

I'm a sad and lonely person, I have to take what I can get.
well, you definitely made a wrong choice about what do you want to get.

you need to get a life. it's a hard level quest, but very satisfying.

Don't all threads like this just end on a mutual agreement that more recent FF games suck? (i.e. everything after X)

i started playing ff13 just today. the cutscenes are very cheesy, one after another. tidus and yuna 'laughing' in ffx still holds a top spot in that kind of rankning, imho. i think i'll agree there - games are becoming more cheesy, and more fanservice oriented due to better graphics. or rather more visuals-oriented altogether.

In fact Final Fantasy XII was imho the same thing, a bunch of "slapped on" synopsis masquerading as "deep story".
ff12 is set up in universe where vagrant story and final fantasy tactics also happen. so i cannot help but keep comparing one to another.

since it's a part of the series, a step back from "save-the-world" scheme is actually pretty natural. usually when you save the world in a final fantasy game there is nobody else left plotting to destroy it once again (well, except for ffx and ff7 sequels). if that would happen in ff12 it might make the other ivalice alliance games a bit pointless. it is also a nice change from the a bit worn out and boring formula.

as far as the plot is concerned, once again i have to compare it to vagrant story. that game had scarce and vague cutscenes. and yet people managed to come up with pretty long plot analysis for it. i suppose it is similar with ff12, although i must agree that the plot is somewhat loose and sometimes just goes away.

« on: 2010-09-20 15:23:38 »
both of those bad guys were created in various evil experiments, so that's a common start.

but i like kefka more. he is nobody's puppet and he is so much more random. he reminds me of joker from the dark knight movie, played by heath ledger. he does not have any grand scheme, and plays along and takes advantage of various opportunities along the way. he does surprising things and pursues pure chaos. sephiroth has everything planned beforehand.

in terms of d&d classification, sephiroth would be neutral evil while kefka fits chaotic evil description. first one goes by the plan to realize his (or jenova's) wishes. second one wants to be the strongest and not bound by any laws. and that is what he does all the time, by breaking all the rules and kiling people in his way.

that makes kefka so much more interesting. he's such a bastard ;)

Will there be Vaan?  ;D

Lets hope not. I can do without the most terribly boring main character in the history of final fantasy

not to mention the he constantly and i mean CONSTANTLY looks like he's crying
ashe, penelo, balthier + bonus yiazmat summon and i'm sold. but who will fill the shoes of the bad guy? vayne's first form (still human shaped with his 6 floating swords) might fit.

btw ff12 didn't really have a main character. story starts with vaan, but it's not really tied to him. more to ashe, and self-proclaimed "leading man" ;)

mint is better imho, mostly because it doesn't really rely on ubuntu's configurators and it's still pretty convenient to use - there was a debian based mint release recently, which works nearly as well as typical ubuntu-based mint.

mint is just a bunch of artwork and configuration tools on top of some distribution. and it's written by independent developers.

for typical users the fact that is preconfigured with codecs/extra firmware is a big plus. i prefer it due to the fact that it stays closer with projects it benefits from. ubuntu seems to push linux desktop in their own direction, and their modifications to gnome desktop aren't always welcome by gnome developers. they seem too ubuntu-specific.

One way to make a game harder and fun at same time is to introduce puzzles.  FFX had Cloister of trials (but that is just 1) and I loved that but Breath of Fire III imho beats any FF game hands down in terms of some of its gameplay.

FF games could add little things like puzzles without the need to be grinding and battling.
harder yes, more fun - NO.

i hate those mini games in ffx requred for celestial weapons. catching baloons, dodging lightning and that annoying blitzball. it's just too arcade (except for blitzball), for a (semi) turn-based rpg.

cloisters of trials were cool, though.

maybe this time the game will offer more even difficulty level, because even developers admitted they made cloud easier to use for beginners.

i bet they also made squall suck intentionally - his moves are so slow and miss so often that enemy with average reflexes can run circles around him.

If you get pissed off at someone and want to blow their brains out, get on a game, like Delta Force Xtreme 2, jump on a server, and imagine that one of the people there is the person you're pissed at. Then go trigger happy, you'd be amazed at how well it helps to deal with the stress.
it only works if you are good at a game. and online games are full of those crazy no-lifes that will destroy you twice in 5 seconds. no fun in that ;)

there is a problem of potential addiction to gaming (been there). and also a problem of potential loss of distinction between game and real life, which is what causes some idiots to go trigger happy in schools etc.

Yes, violent video games can provoke aggression in some, but for others, like me, it is a medication for aggression. I have psychologists orders NOT to quit playing violent video games because of my history of anger issues, and this is coming from an ARMY psychologist. Getting pissed off and want to kill someone? Jump in a game and do it! There are a lot of people out there like me who self-medicate on violent video games, it is a much healthier way for one to deal with anger compared to the alternative (getting a gun and going "postal").
in my case it's not the violent games, but frustrating ones.

well, some are violent and frustrating - ever played ninja gaiden on ps3 ? :> ( god of war 2 is also very frustrating ). or gradius / ddr games at higher levels / gran turismo licence tests / wipeout hd racing at elite difficulty. or the games where even "normal" difficulty is way off the scale that are the most infuriating.

games with pointless violence are a different thing, though.

fortunately i always stop playing before getting really angry due to my continous failures. even when i am angry i never take it on anyone/anything. that's also a reason i prefer not to play online - i worry that i might actually get angry at somebody who beat me (because it would be obvious) or get seriously addicted.

i give such games a try once in a while to see how long i can keep my calm. and i'm slowly getting better at this, and it's a great anger management/patience exercise (if you can keep things under control).  it's all a matter of knowing your limits, and knowing when to stop, which is something many people don't do. and a matter of not taking a game too seriously, which is something even more people cannot do.

92
that reminds me of silent hill 3 where you have a confessional scene, where you can choose to forgive or not to the person making a confession about her sins.

neither choice is the right one, and it was also inspired by real life experience of one of the devs ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f6EWqCscyc#t=22m18s )

i guess many games have events inspired by real life experiences of the developers.

Games are, now days, like alcohol used to be.
Remember? Government thought it was dangerous, people loved it, government banned it, people went apeshit, government allowed it again.
well alcohol is dangerous. because it makes people more aggressive. some games also do, but that depends on the person.

if parents took game ratings more seriously, we'd have less problems with that. the problem lies in the lack of attention to the kids, and tendency to addiction towards games.

i think that avgn nerd actually shares his true opinions and doesn't exaggerate.

i still remember his godzilla rant, and i just don't believe it could be any closer to the truth.
(for the curious http://www.gametrailers.com/video/angry-video-screwattack/55450 , starting at 12:50 ) - i don't believe he was acting there ;) )

I'm actually taking some time to watch the FFX review.

Part 2.  I find it interesting how he takes the mick out of Wakka and Seymour's hairstyles.  He's got a pretty poor hairstyle himself :P

Not defending FFX.  All in all, his review is harsh, but hilarious, especially the "ass count" thing he's doing ;D
harsh, but very true. i liked the part about anti-magic field in ff8 prison. and moments later you can use magic in battle in the very same area. he pretty much nailed it.

I like vinyls better than CDs.  I just find a warmth to the sound that I can't seem to find with anything else
at least there is a way to differentiate vinyl sound from cd - vinyl has that analog noise. telling apart cd and well-compressed mp3/aac/whatever file is very difficult.

Agreed.  There's 2 methods to that imo.  1) Have a damn good ear (thankfully good hearing runs in my family) 2) Spectral Analysis
actually if your headphones jack is very loosely plugged into the port (so that the stereo is a bit messed up) you can hear mp3 artifacts very clearly, even on high quality files. it happened to me a few times.

it might be called cheating, but hey -  it works ;)

My desktop images changes quite often ( ) so here is another one. In about a week, if this thread isn't dead, I may post another.

Can anyone guess who that is on my screen?
no idea. are you asking about wallpaper or that dude on the icons ?

one of these is going on my desktop pretty soon ;-)

also, hilarious to the max :]

edit: watching ff8 review. naming angelo as Anal kills me :]

Nice.  I can't stand KDE4, I like the concept, don't like the application.  I also think it runs like crap.  I'm partial to e17 to be honest, if only it wasn't so damn glitchy... Stupid beta software
if e17 finally gets a decent tray support i will also give it a shot. i don't like the general impression of slugginess that kde4 desktop has, even if the software has a pretty reasonable resource footprint. the various side apps are great, though (love okular and gwenview)
