NOW INCLUDED IN MOGURI BETA V2

Releasing some HD battle backgrounds with hand-cut transparency (and without animation bugs).

NEW 2020-04-26 - HD Battle Backgrounds v2
(outdated) 2020-04-14 - HD Battle Backgrounds v1

Just put the content (p0data2.bin) in \FINAL FANTASY IX\streamingAssets\ (save the original p0data2.bin first)

Credit: zePilot (for his script that introduced me to ESRGAN, and his model that I re-used), Tirlititi for Hades Workshop

This will eventually be part of Moguri.

Testing right now!

Is there a reason why the p0data2.bin is only about 900MB compared to the Moguri Mod p0data2.bin with 2GB?
I‘m not into modding... just wondering  ;D

Yes, that's linked to the way the transparency of the images is handled. I used DXT1 instead of DXT5, because the game only uses 1 bit of alpha (so it means transparency is either 0 or 1, not in between). Thus, the size is smaller and the final result has less artifact. I tested all possible options, this is the best one.

I noticed a few problems with the endgame, I'll make a new download once I get to it.

During the battle with the last boss, the eyes on the walls do not blink, and the textures scroll along the wall.

I'm happy to report that all this is fixed and beautiful now. Memoria was a lot of work, but I love these two screens, so I had to put the time and effort. I was actually at work on these 2 in the last few days.
I'll post the beta very soon. It's compiling right now, so that'll will at least take the night.

Thank you so much for this mod.

Just wondering how can I use this with Alternate Fantasy mod by Tirlititi? Both use p0data2.bin. I have no idea how to merge those two files. Hoping you can help.

Unfortunately, it will have to wait until he decides to merge those files. I'll gladly give him my files if he wants after I'm done. In the meantime, use his p0data2.bin.

Here is version 2 of battle backgrounds!

NEW 2020-04-26 - HD Battle Backgrounds v2

It's full of fixes, including final boss animation, a lot of skies texture matches...

Next version will see an increase in quality of the textures. I realized I was using a compression method that is degrading the quality too much. I still need it for transparent objects. So I'll need to make a big sort, and that'll take time.

I used UnityEX for this. Extracted textures from assets modded by snouz, and then packed it in Alternate Fantasy. I think that in this way, you can implement improved textures in any version of the game. In addition, UnitEX supports the command line.
