Looking at this thread, I just noticed, my desktop is totally blank. I'm sure there used to be an image there...

I just reverted back to the default look of my themes so it does not look good but anyways I use a background image with the buster sword too.

I dunno, I kinda don't like that pic. The blade looks too short, and the end looks too much like it's been sliced off or something. Would be a very epic pic if that wasn't the case, though.

Same here, besides My Computer and the Recycle Bin, I only have 4 other icons, and that's too many.  The only one I don't know what to do with is my shortcut to FF7Music.  I can't just move it somewhere, that defeats the purpose, and I don't want it in the start menu.  Whatever.

FF VII is why I'm not on Windows 7.  Netbook + Windows 7 = Fine..  Netbook + Final Fantasy VII + Windows 7 = Fine..  Netbook + Windows 7 + Final Fantasy VII + Aali's Custom Driver = Total and Utter Crap

Yep, Mobile Intel Express 945 Chipset Family, according to CCleaner.  Works fine with Windows 7, Works fine with Aali's driver (well, save for things like the post-processing, but that wouldn't really work on here anyway), just not with them together.

Me too, except for some reason aali's can't handle post processing without stutering during camera movement or sometime dropping fps to 20 during dialouge.(I have 3x hd 5770's crossfired too even though its only reading one card, it should still handle postproccesing...)

Rofl @ The Simpsons Movie... No way I'd EVER pay for it either. I pirated Milo and Otis the other day, but only because I can not locate a copy to buy ANYWHERE.(If you havent ever seen the adventures of milo and otis, and you can handle a kiddie geared movie, its GREAT! I mostly watch it for nostalgic reasons though)

2-hour later EDIT: You know, aero flip and the effects added to your superbar by having the 7 theme are much nicer than the superbar itself...

Nope. I rather enjoyed it, and it was certainly better than the season of the TV show that preceded its release, easily the worst season of the show. Heck, since the movie came out, I've noticed that the show has been gradually improving, each season slightly better than the last. It's still not GREAT, but at least it's watchable again.

In case you're wondering, "show desktop icons" are turned off and the taskbar is auto-hidden. Here's what it looks like when it's shown:

As you can tell, I like simplicity!

BTW, it's a rotating background. Every 30 minutes, a new picture of Nanami (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jppNmXcw0fY) becomes the background. There's even a Nanami sound scheme; it's delightfully cute, but she kept saying chin-chin so I had to turn one of the sounds off. What do you think she wanted?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but doesn't 403 Forbidden usually mean that the file is there and you just can't access it? It seems that if the file isn't there anymore, it should be a 404.

Title: Re: Post Your Desktop
Post by: Armorvil on 2010-08-27 18:54:07
Hey, no prob sl1982. To tell the truth, even though the pic shows nudity, it's some kind of artistic photograph that I didn't feel was against the rules. I'm even surprised imageshack took it out. I mean, in my country (France), tits are no big deal, and even though the girl was naked, you couldn't see between her legs. Plus, she had some very small breasts which were hardly vulgar / sexually-oriented in any way. And she looks very pure. I don't see how anyone could have found this picture offensive, but heh, to each his/her own. And if it's to "protect children", this is just stupid. As I said, not only didn't this pic show anything significant, but there's nothing sexual in it. Children know better than most guys what boobies look like... ...But I know prude America has different views on this.

Normally I'd agree with you. I'm also disturbed by women who are too skinny, and can't count the number of times when I thought that a certain woman should eat more hamburgers. But the girl you saw on my desktop is just beautiful. This skinny-ness suits her perfectly, and she's not skinny enough to show what's under her skin (ie. bones, blood vessels & muscles - yuck ) . And her face...  :-*

Anyway, promised, I won't do it again. So you guys won't be able to see my drawings either :P (because yes, I am a perv and proud to be  ;D )

Wow halkun, you have my dream set up haha, I only have a single 1080p monitor :(

What Videocard are you running anyway? i have two 9800gt's with either a GTX470 or 480 in my future :D

My dream setup would be my current 1920x1080 monitor, a 1600x1200 one and a 1440x900 monitor in portrait mode. That's god-tier.

Also, if Halkun isn't playing recent games, I doubt his setup (which seems to be two 1280x1024 monitors) would require a particularly powerful GPU. Two monitors isn't hard for a card from the last few years to handle; hell, before I built my desktop, my laptop was handling a 1440x900 monitor and a 1920x1080 external with no problems even though it was equipped with a 9600m gt.

My Desktop Computer is running on a 32 inch Sony Bravia through HDMI 1080P on a Nvidia GT220. It's a self-built computer... I think a pure dream would be dualscreening or triscreening multiple 32 inch screens... ^.^

My Current Set Up this morning as i was reading the forum. There are two screens the left one is 1680*1050 and the right screen is 1280*1024. they can rotate independently (on-the-fly). Each screen has a "task manager" for windows on that screen. if you look closely you can see the windows without focus are mostly transparent, also in keeping with the zelda theme i see you master sword and raise you a captured frame from OOT as shown in a picture frame widget.

if e17 finally gets a decent tray support i will also give it a shot. i don't like the general impression of slugginess that kde4 desktop has, even if the software has a pretty reasonable resource footprint. the various side apps are great, though (love okular and gwenview)

It's not even tray support, I like how E17's tray works.  My issue relies on the menu.  It tends to screw up way too often.  Like I'll install it, then Firefox is missing, so I gotta jump through hoops to re-add it, then giving it an icon is another story entirely.  Many of the GUIs for customization don't work half the time, and the config files are horribly laid out

idk whan the last time u used kde4 was but it has been getting much more stable and responcive since. kde4.5 is very snappy here , and i just put it on an old sempron 3300+ w/ a geforce4mx (intergrated) w/ 1GB of ram.even with desktop effects turned on the machine is still responcive and at least 2x the speed xp was on the same machine.

Yeah, it's been a while since I touched KDE4.  I think the last version I tried was 4.3

That being said, I like the concepts of KDE4, I really do, but I don't like the application.  I think the concepts could be realized a bit better.

EDIT: For example.  I hate desktop clutter, HATE IT, I have 4 icons on my desktop right now and it's driving me insane.  However, I like having a traditional desktop, something that you can't do with KDE4 (or I never figured out how to at least)

I like the look and feel of KDE4 myself, But when i last used it (KDE4.1 i think, maybe earlier) it was a lot slower then gnome was (on an athlon x2 5000+ with a single 9800gt)

Sadly the RAID support in Ubuntu/kubuntu sucks so i can't install it. Else i'd be using it right now haha.

To enable a "traditional"  you rt.click on the desktop and select desktop settings then Activity on the left side and change it to "Folder View"(this has moved a few times thats based on kde 4.5). i also hate icons on my desktop so i found it very easy to adjust to the "new" kde desktop style.

oh yea kde 4.1 was rather slugish mainly because of plasma being completely new. i have never tried to set up raid on a *buntu machine, but i do know there are a few people on the kubuntu forum that have raid set up. perhaps the community docs will help you with this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Raid

I actually tried that, I have a "FakeRAID"0 system, and whenever i try to install dmraid tries installing to a single HDD instead of across them (assume thats how it would work) and it looks for a location that doesn't exsist. And thus, i get no bootloader :(

Just use the resolution as a search term in Google Images. You can also request images of a specific colour.

This will get you most wallpapers around, because they're usually accompanied with their resolution.

To see mine in it's full setting takes three pics, first is the basic view without doing anything...
Second is the start menu and task bar, which is hidden by default...
And finally, the third is where I keep my "desktop" files...
As you can tell, I run a very clean desktop, and my religious affiliate is blatantly obvious. The "watermark" in the bottom right is because I'm running windows 7 64bit ultimate in test mode so I can use my ps3 controller to play FFVII with an original playstation style controller, and you need to use custom drivers for that, which have no digital signature and 64 bit windows requires driver signing unless in test mode.

Of course, I'll post my ubuntu desktop sometime in the future, and both my server desktops too, but that's for another day when I feel like taking screenshots on them, putting them up and posting on here.

I'm probably buying a 1 or 2 TB harddrive tomorrow night, so expect to see an OS X screenshot soon (if I get it running well (meaning getting Wifi working, which seems to be a bitch on an EeePC) I may try to get FF VII running, which would then mean fuck-all to Windows... not that I won't keep the recovery partition, just in case)

You are correct. I tend to have slight obsessions over characters (usually females) every 3 months or so. She is this quarters. Funny thing is, the last time I played a Crash Bandicoot game (about nine years a ago) I absolutely hated playing as her.

I'd be wary of her; from the looks of things, if she catches you playing a game with a different girl in it, you'll wake up the next morning with a certain part of your body missing. If you know what I mean

Now my only problem is getting FF VII up and running on here.  I tried Winebottler, and it started the setup app, but I got no graphical output, so I think I'm going to build my own version of WINE, and if that doesn't work... well, I have a 2 TB external, so I guess I'll just linux that up a bit

I was just gonna use MacPorts, but I'll look into Darwin Ports.  I'm gonna guess they're virtually the same with just some aesthetic changes.  I could also use Fink if I so chose.  I'm still nervous though, because the pre-compiled didn't run right.  It may be the pre-compiled binary, or my OS, or my hardware in combination with the OS

EDIT: upon further research, they are one and the same, the project just changed it's name to Macports.

It has an Intel GMA950 according to the System Profile I believe, it might be a 940 or 945, according to CCleaner when I used Windows, I don't remember.  I think it's more an OS X on a Netbook issue than it is a FF VII/Aali's Driver issue.  OS X's windowing system isn't X, so I have to run X11 on top of it, and then the driver, I just don't think the video memory is there.  I'll just get it up and running on Linux whenever I bother to do that

Well, after fiddling around a lot, I figure I should show you all the current status of my desktop, as well as explain Some of what I had to go through to get to this point.

1) Danger Mouse icons, F*CK YEAH

2) In the upper right hand corner, notice the battery icon, volume icon, airport icon, and blue dude with angry eyes

3) The About This Mac dialogue, this shows that I am running 10.6.4 on an Atom-based Netbook, Atom support was removed from the Kernel in 10.6.2, I use Meklort's Netbook Installer, which has a custom bootloader, to patch the Atom support back into the Kernel on boot.  I hate the bootloader, but it does the job (not as customizable as the main branch of the bootloader he applies patches to)

4) The system profiler, it shows my Model Name as "Mac" and Model Identifier as "1005HA".  1005HA is the model of EeePC I have.  I once tried to get the system profiler to display that, and nearly borked my system.  I installed Meklort's NBI, and it did it right away.  Now that it does display it, I liked it better when it said I had a Macbook.

Sorry for the disorganization, I'm tired, and rant-y

Well, I'ma have a new picture in a few days, probably tomorrow, I installed the 10.6.4 update, and patched the kernel so it'd actually run...  Now games like Postal 2 or The Sims 2 no longer run, SOOOO, reinstall I shall.  I'm probably going to do it early in the morning.  Shame is, it's running BEAUTIFULLY, save for that problem.  There may also be something I'm completely missing here, complete re-install should take care of that either way.

The icon theme pack I use came with many Distro start-menu icons.. I liked the Fedora one most. The distro itself is Linux Mint.
The menus are filled with Doujin, Touhou stuff, some games, and programming/dev related stuff.

The Kuma bear (pedobear) icon is script that randomly picks anime from my "Currently Watching" folder and starts playing it.

Yeah was thinking with going Awesome or OpenBox first, but then again I've never tried KDE fully so..

i love me some KDE., if you want awesome cause its tilling you can enable that in kde 4.5 now (but its not as at it as awesome is ,yet). openbox can be used as the window manager, by changing your default window manager to openbox. however there is not much of a point to that, i have found kde 4.5 to be faster then previous kde versions (almost as fast as kde 3.5.x) and very stable.

I'll probably improve on the method a bit in the future, but all is well (http://imgur.com/lQBtd.png)

Now I just need to get FF7Music working without crashing, and TA works, but the caching fucks everything up, so that's a no go.  w/e, it's still better than no FF VII

That's not OSX. That's Linux with an OSX theme. Note where it says "X11"

No, that's OS X.  Part of OS X's Developer Tools is an X11 server, see

I won't lie though, that's still my EeePC, I just managed to get OS X running (beautifully) on it.  It's the only OS on here now.

EDIT: well, not the developer tools per se.  It can be installed separately

Cupcake ,good work!  Can you make a write up of how you installed that on Os X. and the cache issues are prolly related to the shitty intel video card in those netbooks. IIRC is runs a bit shitty on my netbook too. (intel GMA 915 video).

X11 is required to run wine  on mac os . since almost all *nix/bsd distros have it, wine uses it to draw stuff . however mac Os (a highly moded bsd distro) uses a special X server called Quatz, and its not yet supported by win., since many other *nix programs require X11 to draw, apple kindly includes a copy of X11 on all of its Os install cds, sadly they dont' update it as often as the X11 community so sometimes you have issues when programs require a newer version of X11 then apple has provided.

1) I will make a write up when I get out of work

2) That's the thing, the caching works fine under Windows.  It may also be the version of the driver I'm using, I'm going to play around a bit when I get home before I do the writeup, as well as start from scratch and see if I can improve the method a bit, as it's a bit hacky at the moment

very good , about the caching im not sure if that does or does not work on my netbook ill have to play some ff7 on it later on. and see what was the matter w/ it

That's part of why I'm going to make a new prefix and start again, I'm not sure if it's the version of the driver I'm using, or if it's my netbook, or if it's WINE, or anything really.  I've got a bit of experimenting to do before I make a write up.  I'll probably have it up by tonight though, if not early tomorrow

EDIT: Oh wonderful, this is going to take some extensive playing that I can't do until either tomorrow night, or Monday, because I can't get it working in a new prefix, so I have to figure out the secret here.  I have a crazy, whacked out idea, that juuuust might work...  Then again, I'm delirious from lack of sleep

I can't understand not liking KDE. It's gorgeous, it works beautifully. Compare to Gnome, which is pretty ugly (even with a good theme), and uses resources like there's no tomorrow.

I'll give Openbox credit, it's better resource-wise than either Gnome OR KDE, but currently no desktop environment matches the beauty of KDE, IMO.

Well, after much tinkering, I have a new method for Final Fantasy VII on OS X.  Unfortunately, it isn't the type for a tutorial, it's more in-depth than one would need.  It's just for my own personal fancy, and I can't replicate it working with a new prefix still (hopefully I got it working on Timu's OS X computer, it should, but I can't be sure)

Once again, this is just for my own fancy, to show off with but

Now it appears as a native application in my dock (it isn't (duh), and it took some tinkering with X11, and playing around with swapping prefixes, moving prefixes, and deleting prefixes, but it works)

I'm so happy.  Now if only the problems with Final Fantasy VII with WINE would disappear.

EDIT: Update, figured out a problem I was having with my desktop so I updated the picture, and removed that part of the post.  So happy ^_^

EDIT 2: Well, looks like I'm going to sacrifice my friday night for you people.  A random idea popped into my head about getting it to work, and it looks like it worked, so I'm probably going to do a write-up tomorrow, and then, if you're good boys and girls, I'll even make an installer, AND, tell you how to make your copy of Final Fantasy VII a .app like mine is, instead of a shortcut on your desktop with no shortcut badge to the .exe which is in a hidden folder, like mine was.  If you're REALLY good, I'll make a write up with both (since you need a working prefix first, in order to make the .app... unless *thinks silently*

Fuck it, I have work in a few hours, I need some sleep.  Maybe I'll bring my netbook to work, and hack away at this on my break.  Just know that soon there will be an OS X tutorial (and Timu, that means what I gave you will be obsolete, messy, and bloated, so when it comes around, I suggest backing up your saves and ff7input.cfg and following the tutorial)

I find it kind of funny that since I turned my netbook into a mac, I play more games on it than I did when it was a Windoze computer

Don't worry; you're already in trouble for quoting a picture.

The forum automatically resizes pictures.

Damn. I try to remember all the rules. I got in trouble for a necro, I knew it was a necro, apologized for it inside the necro post, I just thought people could use a good laugh from the previous post. And I recall someone saying that quoting a picture is okay once, but once it goes past that it is just unnecessary. It may not have been a mod and they may have been wrong though.

Maybe he has a VM with XP running IE6?

I believe quoting images in Completely Unrelated is alright, as long as you don't go crazy with it, such as quoting walls of images...

Greatest investment I have ever made. Its worth more then my actual computer itself. And my girl Jenny doesnt know it, but I spent more on those monitors then her birthday presents from the past 3 years combined. Oops. Thats what she gets for going out with a geek right?

Quoting images has been deemed fine now.  Just don't be stupid about it.   If it's not necessary that people see the picture you're referring to, leave it out.  And if there are more than 1 or 2, don't do it.

Basically don't crowd the forums if you don't have to
