Unable to Start FF7
« on: 2020-07-20 22:44:06 »
Hello,

Windows 10, non-Steam (non YARR) FF7 install, 7th Heaven v2.2.1

After some issues with the old 2.0 7th Heaven install, I uninstalled both FF7 and 7th Heaven, re-installed FF7, and installed v2.2.1 instead. This should be a clean install of both. At any rate, I got everything downloaded again and the game won't launch with mods (tested launching from 7th Heaven without mods and it worked fine).

First log always looks like this:

Apologies if this has been asked a million times. I wasn't able to find previous instances with a search. Any idea what the problem might be?

What are your system specs?  When testing on what's cheerfully known as "The Potato," (which is about as bare-minimum as we can get these days) I often run very close to exceeding the max number of injection attempts, and it's not unheard of for it to think it's failed even though I can see things starting up in the background.  As for the second, I've found that after a failed startup attempt, that I do need to close 7H beta486 before starting again.

Definitely better than the potato's specs.  Are you running 7H as admin (it should do this automatically, but if your account doesn't have admin rights, it may not work), and is DEP either set to "All programs with 7H in the exceptions list" or "essential Windows programs only"?  If the answer both both is "Yes" then hop on the Discord and poke unab0mb...

The answer to both is "Yes", by the way. I'll get on the Discord and ask @unab0mb.

I'm not sure why the first issue shows up on occasion, it should be fixed as of 2.0. Usually it is fixed when people successfully launch the game without mods or directly open their Steam version of ff7 first. The 2nd issue is the "emulate dpad via keyboard" polling for a controller and one probably does not exist/isn't plugged in or turned on. My intention was for this to be off by default but was overlooked (fixed in final). Go to 7H Settings>Controls and disable it.

Turning off the "Emulate dpad via keyboard" fixed the second error, but even after launching FF7 outside of 7th Heaven and trying to play it with mods again, I'm still getting the "Failed to Inject" error from the first log. Easyhook just isn't working.

Just to add to this topic, I'm having exactly the same issue. No number of combinations of controller options are working at all. I can launch the game just fine without mods, but the "Easy hook... number of attempts (14)" is identical when I try to launch with mods.

2.0 was working for me a few months ago, but stopped when I tried the other day, which is when I downloaded the new version. I'm trying to remember what I changed in the interim that would make it not work now.

Well... this isn't going to be the answer you want. To be fair, there are two things I did that might have had an effect, but I really think it's just the one.

Previously, I had compressed my hard drive to save space. I uncompressed it, and uninstalled FF7 and 7th Heaven again. I restarted, then re-installed FF7 and installed 7th Heaven VERSION 2.0.

This time, it worked. I'm no programmer, so I really don't know how or why there would be a difference for some people, but it appears that the 2.2.1 version of 7th Heaven is the culprit that was preventing me from playing the game previously.
