A mask is a greyscale image associated with each layer. It says something about how transparent a layer is in different parts. Darker parts means more transparency (or vice versa).In Paint Shop Pro you can edit the mask by selecting "layer/edit mask" from the menus. I never learned Photoshop.In graphics programming we use the term "alpha color" for the same principle. Normally you have three colors, called RGB (red, green and blue), but then you add alpha (RGBA) and the last color component is the amount of transparency...
