Something puzzles me. It would seem that use of localized versions of XP is lot more common than I thought (unless XP has started to change the names of My Computer and My Documents when you change the locale... which it shouldn't do, I think).

The reason this puzzles me is the support, or lack thereof. See, when (for example) a service pack is released, the US-English version is out, rest are coming when they happen to feel like it. Some major languages seem to get simultaneous release with English stuff - at least occasionally - but the smaller ones often are lagging behind.

Thus I'm puzzled as to why anyone would want to use a localized version of XP.
Title: Post Your Desktop
Post by: Emerald Weapon on 2006-04-04 09:41:42
I'm using a Dutch version of WinXP because I was able to get a legal version of it through my University. I paid a mere 15 euro's, whereas XP normally costs around 100 euro's or more. The only version they sold however was the Dutch one, so I had to go with that one.

On top of that, I get my updates everytime they come out. I've installed them at least 5 times now and my system is still Dutch...would that make Dutch a major language? Somehow I can hardly believe that.

Interesting nevertheless.

Service packs (http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2.html), too?

Yes, I can see that that's for the CD, but I couldn't find the dates for the downloadable version. Unless I'm totally mistaken, there was a similar - although not that clear - pattern there too.

ye-roon - Fate/Stay Night is a game by Type-Moon, the anime is adapted from that. Fate/Hollow Ataraxia is the sequel to Stay Night, hence has the same characters plus a few new ones.

Hmm...you might just be right. I can't seem to find them anywhere indeed. It is ofcourse no problem for me to switch from Dutch to English, I don't know however whether or not I would be needing a different XP version in order to do so.
However, I can't imagine they'd make these service packs in just one language only...
Title: Post Your Desktop
Post by: Aaron on 2006-04-04 22:11:38
During testing, Windows / service packs are generally available in English, German (which has some pretty long words), and Japanese (which uses a multi-byte character set... although they may have moved everything to Unicode or something by now? I'm not sure).  Some of the localization work and testing for other languages doesn't happen until the service pack is finished, which is why there is a delay on the release for other languages.

Quote
I don't know however whether or not I would be needing a different XP version in order to do so.

If you're talking about just flipping a switch and having Windows be in English, I don't think that this is possible.  You'd have to get the English version.

Not for a long while I would imagine though. Fate/Stay Night is still airing now, and it's unlikely they'd animate a sequel until a good 6 months after the finish of Stay Night. I would like to see Hollow Ataraxia as an anime though :)

Eh. This happens to be a place for sensible people who realize that typing is typing, and that the reading process -- a crucial aspect of communication through the written word -- is the same whatever intention the author had while writing it. "Taiping ass yu wud spik is djast stoopid", the equivalent of speaking without moving your lips or with your tounge so far out you spray the listener with lukewarm saliva. It's plain old annoying, and unless that is your intention you'd be well advised to reconsider your habits.

The written language was invented for a reason, namely to ensure successful communication in a limited medium. When speaking you have a whole range of additional means of conveying meaning, such as intonation, facial gestures, hand gestures, body movement or additional sounds. None of these apply when your entire message is condensed into a few characters on a computer screen, which is why you will write proper goddamn English if you expect someone to even understand you, much less care about anything you say.

P.S. Only two spelling errors in as many lines. Quite impressive, and yet so far still to go.

You are beating a dead horse here, and I can get lot more unpleasant if you don't have the brains to stop right now.

EDIT: As for that horse cow: we need an animated picture that shows both eyes. The eyes will of course grow brighter and darker in turns, accompanied with the appropriate sound effect from Knight Rider.

It's a medievil KITT! And needs only Michael Knight standing next to it.

Although I do not know much about photography, I think that the environment (where the dog, cat, girl or whatever is) has to be dark.
When you trigger the flashlight using a photo camera, the iris does not react quick enough to close the pupil, and then the color of the inner side of the eye gets reflected, which is red...

Hmmm, could be. Especially since the anti-red eye feature some cameras have is just a fancy name for pre-flash, triggered just before the more powerful real flash.

There is a fluid in the dog's eye that helps it adapt to darkness.  This gives them a kind of natural night vision.  The color can also vary because of breed and age of the dog.  Sorry I don't have the exact terms, I know "fluid" doesn't quite answer your questions. :)  I'll dig up the correct terms soon.

Ok the "fluid" I mentioned earlier is called vitreous fluid, which gives dogs night vision, lubricating the cornea, and helps to dilate their pupils.  When the photoreceptors hit the lens of the eye the pupil constricts.  This allows vitreous fluid to flood into the optic chiasm, causing a thick membrane over the cornea.  The color may come up green or red in the dogs eyes depending on the intensity of the light.

I know this is terribly off topic, but you should learn something new everyday, right?  :)

That's actually quite interesting. Night vision is awesome. One time at a coast guard base I got to try a pair of NV goggles on. It intensified the moonlight so much it was as though it was broad day light (with the only colors being green white and black)

Post by: L. Spiro on 2006-04-21 07:38:07
You make it seems as if only dogs have this fluid.

Nearly every animal has this fluid, including humans, and it is not the reason for night vision.

This deals with cones, rods, carotene, and the tapetum.

Vitamin A starts as beta-carotene, one of the families of plant chemicals known as carote noids.  These exist in green-leaf plants, carrots, and some other types.
When we eat these types of plants, we convert it into other types of vitamin A called retinols.
In the eye, beta-carotene is converted to the aldehyde form of vitamin A called retinaldehyde and bounds to a protein called opsin, which resides in rods and cones.
These line the back of the eye and are what trigger the transient excitation of electrical energy that our brains use to interpret visually the world we see.

As long as there is enough beta-carotene in the retina, rods and cones can do their respective jobs (offering both color vision and night vision).

Rods are more sensitive to light than cones, and in the time of need they will absorb more carotene to help a person/animal see better at night.
This process involves the dilation of the retina to allow more light in and the gradual absorption of beta-carotene, which is why night vision is gradual; when the lights go out, you are immediately blinded until your rods can adjust.
Likewise, when the lights are turned on your rods must disperse of more beta-carotene, until which time your eyes will burn from over stimulation.

Although functionally the same, animals still have the edge over humans at seeing in the dark.  This has to do with an extra reflective layer animals have called a tapetum.
And this is also related to the devil eyes you see in animal pictures, and red eyes you see in pictures of humans.

In humans, after the eye has been dilated, and a photo is taken, more light will enter the eye and reflect off a human’s choroid.  The effect is always red because the anatomy of our eyes is different from those of animals.  The red comes from blood vessels.
Some cameras uses two flashes to reduce the effect.  The first flash forces the pupil to constrict so that the second flash will not catch so much reflectivity.
Pupil restriction is faster than rods absorbing beta-carotene, so you will still be blinded by both flashes.

However, in animals, the red-eye effect is not always red, and is much more intense.
The green/blue/yellow eye in animals was correctly related to night vision previously in this topic, but incorrectly related to vitreous fluid.
Both night vision and the “pet eye” effect are caused by light bouncing off the animal’s tapetum, which is a reflective layer in the back of the animal’s eye intended to improve vision at night.

Tapetal color can vary to some extent with coat color. Some animals, and a few dog and cat breeds (for instance, blue point siamese cats), have no tapetal pigmentation. These animals show a red reflex as humans.
The color of the eyes in photographs also depends on the angle of the eye relative to the camera.
It is common to take a picture “across” a dog’s face and see one colored eye and one normal eye.

L. Spiro

[Edit]
I forgot to mention that rods are dispersed in higher numbers just outside the center of the eye, decreasing towards the outside of the eye, while cones are entirely focused towards the center of the eye.
This is why, at night, you can’t see anything by looking directly at it.
You must look a bit to the side where the focus on the item will encounter the highest number of rods.

There was one other copy/paste quote from another site, but unfortunately I don’t have it right now.
Try a search for “Pet Eye Photograph”.

This is the actual quoted text:
Quote
“Tapetal color can vary to some extent with coat color. Some animals, and a few dog and cat breeds (for instance, blue point siamese cats), have no tapetal pigmentation. These animals show a red reflex as humans.”

Information is all around for those caring to seek.

I also learned two things during the writing of that essay; while I was already aware of how carotene was used in the eye (my search for “Cone Rod Eye Carotene” led me to that page in the first place), I was not aware of its relationship to vitamin A.   :D
I was also not aware that the color of the tapetum was based on the coat color (as quoted above), but in fact I had believed it was based entirely on camera angle and light intensity.

That’s why I go full-force when I research something; it takes time but nothing is more valuable than knowledge.

Yes, that is one reason rabbits see well in the dark, but carotene is found in green-leaved plants also.
Humans benefits from eating leaves/carrots too, but without the reflective layer we just can’t keep up.

Then there are eagles, which have yet another nifty-spiff eye layer to sharpen images and block out bright light, but I would have to do more Google work to remember the name of it.

My desktop (http://www.memoryhacking.com/Pictures/Desktop.gif) isn’t too surprising.

I draw my own avatars/desktops.

You make it seems as if only dogs have this fluid.

I don't recall ever making that assumption.  I was just making a quick simple answer to a question.  That post was rather long and I must admit full of errors.  That's an unfortunate side effect of the internet.  There are way too many sites, of every topic, giving out misinformation.  Google will not always get you the right answer.  I'll stick with my Anatomy books at med school.

Well I admit the picture on my home computer doesn’t exactly fit the screen dimensions.
To post an actual screenshot would require storing it on my thumb drive and then copying it over to my work computer for uploading on my site.

Of course taking a screenshot of my work computer is simple since I was already using it to write that post.

But the shape of my home computer is odd; it’s a notebook with a wide screen.

Quote

I make video games.
Before I got my notebook, my work computer was also my personal computer.
I still use it for some personal things but now I try to keep everything on my own computer.
But I still play all first-person shooter games on my work computer because the keyboard/mouse is easier to use for that.

I came off a bit harshly without intending to do so.
And I didn’t mean to imply you were flat-out wrong or that you would purposely provide misinformation.
I wasn’t sure where you were getting your information, but science in general has had a death-grip on my curiosity since I was a child, and the mechanics of eyesight was one thing that peeked my curiosity from an early age.
More recently, I got a refresher on the relationship between the eye and carotene on The Discovery Channel (the only network I watched until they decided to replace it with some damn Thai news show).

So, yes, there is a load of misinformation floating about online, but I flagged your original post as erroneous because it conflicted with the things I had known from my own offline studies.
In this case, I used online research to get the exact terms for the reflective layers in each type of eye, and found out a few things along the way.

But I didn’t mean to step on your toes.
Sorry.
On one hand I felt it was like your time to shine, and I didn’t want to ruin it.
But on the other hand the information was a bit flawed and I didn’t want to allow that either.

It's really ok, it is all just text on screen anyhow.  I wouldn't get mad at many people on this forum anyways because there isn't a malicious intent.  I just know that I'm not a programmer, I'm a very tired med student.  I work my tail off and pay my own way at JHU and have been doing so for five years now.

I just would never think of correcting you or many of the other talented programmers on this site.  It would be even more salt in the wound if I said I had snatched these sources online. (One of which seems to be copyright of 1995)  The anatomy and functions of the human eye differ from human to any animal.  I have to study all this crap and I'm never going to be working on a dog.  All of this stuff about a dogs eye is completly off topic from "Post Your Desktop" and is not worth hurt feelings or egos.  I value the friendships I hope I have made here more than picking out erroneous information on trivial, for many of us, useless information.

I used Style XP sometime ago. Quit using though because I didn't like it anymore and no longer had need for it. It's quite sophisticated and you can change almost everything.

I'm not linking, not sure if that's allowed. I believe it's not freeware. However Google is your friend and hit 5 or something like that is a site where one could acquire it in a more or less "legal" way.

While I don't remember the exact facts, I know there is a patch for Windows, that allows you to use 3rd party themes without any sort of skinning program, like windowblinds or stylexp. it involved replacing a file which i believe was called uxtheme.dll or something along those lines w/a patched one, in your system32 folder. i haven't really done that much with it, i've only found a theme that makes the taskbar and windows look just like the default Windows Media Center edition theme (called Royale). there should be other themes out there that you can use.

i'm wondering if WindowBlinds themes work with this... i should test it sometime..

My desktop changes every hour. It chooses a random picture out of a folder that currently has...4,319 pictures in it, all resized in Photoshop to fit my resolution of 1280 x 1024 with black in the background (my monitor is has a aspect ratio of 5:4 and fits that resolution, unlike most monitors that have an aspect ratio of 4:3 and fit with 1280 x 960).

I can post my current wallpaper, but this one contains nudity and I don't know if I'm allowed to post it even if it's a link and I give a warning. Am I?

I suppose in the meantime I can post my music player, foobar2000.

Awww, I dunno, this topic is bit of an exception, methinks.

You are going to have it at regular intervals anyway (and I suppose that posting a new desktop counts as 'something new to say'), so I guess it comes down to whether you want one really long-lived desktop topic, or lots of shorter ones. :-)
Title: Re: Post Your Desktop

I agree with Jari. As much as reviving threads is generally frowned upon, it seems much better than to create a new topic for the exact same thing when there's already one suitable. Since this particular thread is entirely driven by content, not discussion, the addition of new content to it seems reasonable, especially since, were a new thread to be started, either of two things would happen:

1. All the desktops in this thread get reposted in the new thread, causing more effort for people and creating a clone with hardly anything new to offer.
2. Somebody links to the old thread, saying that a new one didn't need to be started.

I don't have the authority to make a decision on the matter, but if somebody who does have that authority agrees with me (after I already agreed with Jari), that's just fine.

Seeing this inspired me to clean up the ol' desktop. I usually have the "Show Desktop Items" turned off, so I just save stuff to the desktop anyway without actually putting the files where they belong; that said, my desktop is down to My Computer and a single filefolder, so I might as well just post the picture from where I got it, no?

and four.

(http://koti.mbnet.fi/jarihux/desks/desk-4_tn.jpg) (http://koti.mbnet.fi/jarihux/desks/desk-4.jpg)

For great justice!
Clicking on the pictures will magically show you a larger, native resolution screen shot (270 to 340 KB).

There's a teeny weeny bit of cheating going on, it doesn't actually change the QOTD at every desktop switch (although it can be set to do just that), I just refreshed it manually to give you something new to read. :)

Oh... the wallpapers (made by Tigaer (http://tigaer.deviantart.com/) - my new God) suffer a bit from the jpeg compression in those shots. I just figured that the tradeoff would be desirable over massive file sizes. :)

And for the ones a with very keen eye - yes, there are two instances of Winamp running. :P Completely by accident.

It's a genuine Tony Taka.  Well, the girl at least is, anyway.  I'm not sure about the background, though.

ice_cold513: Awww, thanks. :)

Your Christmas desktop is very cute, too - not to mention very Christmasy with the taskbar and all. :)

I've had couple of different anime-themed Christmas desktops along the years myself - it's just that it's difficult to find enough wallpapers, because I'd need them either in 1600x1200 or good enough quality in lower resolution that they can be resized and still look nice. Not to mention that I'd need four of them. Well, not need, but I prefer to have different wallpaper on each desktop, partly because it works as a visual cue about what desktop I'm currently on and partly because it looks neat. So, the wallpaper search is somewhat of a pain in the ass. :|

That's totally a thumbnail. The full size is totally 1280*800. You can totally click the thumbnail to see the full size image. I totally made that wallpaper about a week ago. The wallpaper in the shot is totally 640*400. I'm totally gonna shut up now.

Awwww, I think that your desktop is nice. :)

Yeah, it seems to be called Terragen - 69 (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/9517768/?qo=22&q=by%3Atigaer&qh=boost%3Apopular+-in%3Ascraps).

Terragen very likely comes from the fact that it's partly done with Terragen (http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/). :-P Which has a free version, btw, and is a very nice and relaxing thing to play with...

...even though achieving the quality of the real Terragen artists is not very likely for most of us. But compared to things like Lightwave and 3DSMax it's very easy to use, which makes it fun.

With BSPlayer, like you could have done since 2002? :-P You don't even need Visva (http://www.websters-dictionary-online.net/translation/Finnish/visva). :D

Skillster: It's called Windows DreamScene and is an Ultimate Extra - although, only select Beta testers have access to the update at the moment. I'm pretty sure it will be publicly available soon (possibly just as a Release Candidate though). You can basically play any video file you want in the background including HighDef content. Google DreamScene for more information.

Jari: How does BSPlayer work? The good thing about DreamScene is that it uses the GPU (as apposed to the CPU) so it's not hogging precious CPU time.

Post by: Jari on 2007-02-11 12:45:23
It's been 5 years since I used it - at least as a wallpaper (and no more than few minutes back then either, it's horribly gimmicky and gets real old real fast) - but I believe that it just makes a large video overlay, and pins it to the desktop, or something. It should use exactly as much resources as playing such a video clip in regular window.

BSPlayer is not the only player to do it, either. I just don't remember the other one right now.

You know, Midgar and NobodyImportant, you could make a smaller version of your screenshots to work as thumbnails.

Sure, SMF resizes the picture dimensions but it can't do anything about the file size. I for one don't particularly enjoy downloading 250 - 600KB 640x480 pictures that would look exactly the same, but would be less than 100KB if you resized them to 640x480.

Please, use your head. Not everyone is on a broadband, and even if they were, there's still no need whatsoever to post fullsized desktops as is.

The pics won't show up anyway if they're on broadband; if someone has the time to look at everyone's desktop in the world, they have a no life crisis anyway. Plus, eye candy is perfectly suitable for any forum, unless you're using that old LYNX browser.

On a side note, BS.player Forum (http://www.bsplayer.com/forum/) is a good resource for video codecs, for those of you trying to mess with the ff7 videos.

What part of "...would look exactly the same..." are you having problems understanding?

EDIT: Actually, let me rephrase; it would look better hand resized. Because for example bicubic resize of Photoshop (or any resize algo of any image editing program, except for nearest neighbor is far superior having your browser scale them... since frankly, I don't think that anyone ever seriously meant the browser scaling to be used for anything except emergencies).

Sorry. Most forums I go to have an autoresize, and I didn't bother to change it.
My current one after failing Beryl, and going back to Windows.

Obviously never actually used it have you.

Vista is fine, works exelently, every game I own runs on it perfectly, Bar FFVII, which I play on my laptop which is DB XP/Vista.

Why must people create such pointless things.

I agreed with you,
I have windows trial boot here windows vista/xp and Debian (linux)
Vista works fine, All of my games runs perfectly, it´s not slow, and I don´t think that vista is huge...
because actually new computer from stores comes with 120 gb of HD ( here in Brazil works in this way)
for example for me
I have 2 hds of 400 gb
7 Gb of vista don´t make any different.

obviously the news OS will be more expensive and huge, but also the computers will being more powerful... it´s the tecnology... if you have a P4 today, and after 5 years the same computer will be a junk piece. :P

So I think that windows vista is a good OS, I do not have nothing to complain.

Best Regards!
