Tweaked stylesheet for Mozilla users
« on: 2006-05-12 07:41:56 »
I got annoyed with the quote-boxes so badly that I tweaked the stylesheet little bit.

Basically transforming this into this.

As you can see, it's very basic quick & dirty fix that has its own problems. Still, I think that it's more readable than the original.

If you want to try it and have no experience in dealing with user styles, install Stylish and then do as they instruct here.

Quote
To install styles from another site, select the code of the style, right-click, and click "Add Selection to Stylish". Give the style a name and press Save. The changes will take effect immediately.

I might tweak it bit more, if I feel like it. Also, contributions are welcome. :) atzn? ...atzn? :P

I'll help a bit after my exams end (next Tuesday).

Other than that I think it's good, but I still think the font size should be changed to small (from x-small). :-D

You also forgot to mention that this only work for Firefox. :-P

Heh, yeah, unfortunately the extension is Firefox-only, that's true.

I don't know about the support of user style sheets, though. I was under the impression that the extension only gives a nicer interface for it, but the functionality is already in Firefox. If that is true, it might be that the functionality is in other Mozillas as well.

I'll change the subject if it's not, though. :)

Now that I think about it, Opera allows user style sheets as well, doesn't it? At least to some extent, IIRC. I should try that.

But yeah, I'll try the font. I already tried it, but I had originally changed all the fonts to Verdana (since I prefer it), and the problem wasn't as bad there. So I just posted it as is (well, after changing the font back).

And thank you, help is welcome. :-D

EDIT: You know, with GreaseMonkey we could do some serious harm modifying. It's bit more complicated than just editing styles, though. Since phpBB User Hide was originally a GreaseMonkey script, I don't see any reason why similar killfile wouldn't be doable for SMF, for example.

EDIT2: Ok, here's a version with quoted text set as 'small'. I also tweaked the text in code-boxes to be larger, but be advised that it will make them display horizontal scrollbars much more often. Aaand I snipped everything that hasn't been changed out of it, since it uses the author style sheet as a base anyway, if I have understood this thing correctly. At least it seems to work for me. :)

I gave up on Stylish - Firefox keeps crashing when I enable it.
I think other than the quote and comment font size, there's nothing much to complain at the moment. Maybe could change the colour scheme too, but that'll take some time with toying and experimenting the colours.

You know, your Firefox is really broken in some way. :P There's no way it can crash that much and be healthy.

Although I have to admit that my IE7 beta 2 still doesn't work right, for that matter.  :-D

Yeah, I was thinking about the colors, something like the old forum perhaps, white/light blue-scheme. Problem is that the darn style sheet defines two background colors and uses them everywhere, I would prefer more control. With the current system it's impossible to tweak small details, since the whole thing is so generic.

That's why I asked for this.

EDIT: I believe that using user style sheets is as simple as editing the userContent.css in your profile directory (and Stylish is just an UI for that). I haven't actually tried it, or anything, though. :P

EDIT2: Breaking news! Super Special Nostalgia Edition!

It used to look like this. Now it looks like this.

This looks like this nowadays.

To be brutally honest, I don't think that the old style works that well with SMF layout. It is remarkably easy to read, though.

Anyway, if you feel like messing with it, here's the style sheet:
