Title: Smoking in video games
Post by: Jari on 2008-11-08 11:56:12
Children, gather around.

I've found out a surefire way to tell if a game is good; check if the protagonist has a chance to smoke. No, seriously.

For example:

They all feature cigarettes and smoking.

Prove me wrong... if you can.

EDIT: Crap, forgot at least System Shock 2. Add that to the list as well.

Ugh. People who smoke "cause it's cool" are lame. >_>
If you smoke because you want to, fair enough (I myself do), but doing it to look "cool"? Meh. -_-"

The initial post is very opinionated.  He actually believes what he says is a fact!  What a slag.

Prove me wrong... if you can.

That was the best part!  And that pretty much proves that he thinks his statement is factual.

Oooh, d00d, you have issues. :-D

How about - instead of whining and moaning - actually trying to prove that I'm wrong? Hmm?

Not that I have played it, but I believe that Sgt Johnson is not the protagonist?

Not to mention that Metacritic disagrees with you, rather strongly even. :P

For that matter, I do not care for GTA-series, but critics seem to think they are good, so...

If you can't tell, I <3 your post!  And why would I try to prove this

Metacritic doesn't usually agree with me, however I also don't like the GTA series...  It's boring. :-D

wrong, it was just an opinion, not a fact.

Opinion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion)

Quote
An opinion is a person's ideas and thoughts towards something which it is either impossible to verify the truth of, or the truth of which is thought unimportant to the person. It is an assertion about something especially if that something lies in the future and its truth or falsity cannot be directly established e.g. induction. An opinion is not a fact, because opinions are either not falsifiable, or the opinion has not been proven or verified. If it later becomes proven or verified, it is no longer an opinion, but a fact.

Fact (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fact)

Quote
Generally, a fact is defined as something that is true, something that actually exists, or something having objective reality that can be verified according to an established standard of evaluation.[1][2][3] There is a range of other uses, depending on the context. For example, fact may be argued under authority of a specific pedagogy, such as scientific facts or historical facts. Rhetorical assertion of fact is often forwarded without an implied or express basis of authority.

Metal Gear Solid - Metascore of 94 out of 100 - Universal acclaim - based on 20 reviews
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - Metascore of 96 out of 100 - Universal acclaim - based on 42 reviews
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - Metascore of 91 out of 100 - Universal acclaim - based on 68 reviews
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Metascore of 94 out of 100 - Universal acclaim - based on 79 reviews

Fallout - Metascore of 89 out of 100 - Generally favorable reviews - based on 12 reviews
Fallout 2 - Metascore of 86 out of 100 - Generally favorable reviews - based on 15 reviews
Fallout 3 - Metascore of 93 out of 100 - Universal acclaim - based on 32 reviews

Deus Ex - Metascore of 90 out of 100 - Universal acclaim - based on 28 reviews

System Shock 2 - Metascore of 92 out of 100 - Universal acclaim - based on 20 reviews

That's 316 people who review games for a living agreeing that games which allow you to smoke are very, very good.

But hey, if you want to call it an opinion, go right ahead. I heard that De Nile is pretty nice place to live in.

316 out of like 6 billion...........
OMG!  I'M STARTING TO THINK YOUR "OPINION" IS NOW A FACT, PROVEN BY NOOBISH REVIEWS!
Thank you very much for the enlightenment!

It's general consensus, not fact.  He never claimed it to be fact.  You've not proved it to be wrong.
316 out of like 6 billion...........

I don't think the entire worlds population cares enough to do games reviews.

It sure as hell sounded like he thought it was a fact when he said this:

Please tell me how I can prove this general consensus wrong.  You can't, its impossible, and you can never prove it right either.

If I say, "I'm bloody amazing at FF7, I'm better than everyone!!!!!!!"

Prove me wrong if you can.
______________________________________________________________
Does the above mean I'm expressing a fact, bullsh*t, or my own opinion?

Jari said games where the protagonist smokes is a good game.  That's to him, and with the games mentioned, the majority on Meta.  If you don't like the games on that list, meh, personal choice.

It's a theory, numbskull. Apparently on a fast track to becoming a fact, since it would appear that nobody has been able to prove it wrong.

I've talked about this with few of my friends, and they couldn't prove it wrong, either. I am curious about why the apparent connection exists, but I'm waiting if someone can disprove my theory, before I get into discussion why such connection exists.

It's crazy how Jari can make just a fun whimsical topic for discussion and a little word "fact" can spark an argument.  Instead of getting all wound up about if it is fact, just play the game and prove him wrong.  Jesus Christ, people try and spark a lively conversation and a wet blanket has got to shoot it down...

/On Topic
How about Max Payne?  If I recall he was a smoker, and feelings about this series is very mixed.  Please discuss and play nice.

I actually took up your suggestion for playing Deus Ex! Thank you! Does Indigo Prophecy smoke too?

Good games that don't smoke:
Tetris.
Einhander.
Code Veronica.

Seem that you play a lot of immensive FPS style RPGs.

[facepalms *really* hard]

First of all, not only did you necropost, you admitted to necroposting, and you're probably also aware of the fact that the creator of the thread has since LEFT THE FORUMS.

Second of all, your point was completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. The theory isn't "All good games have smoking in them", it's "All games with smoking in them are good".

Get your boolean logic right.

Everything leading up to that might be pretty cool too.

I smoke because I enjoy the taste of tobacco.  I know it'll kill me, and I accept it, for I don't give a shit about life anyway.  Where's the stupidity in my actions?

You enjoy the taste of tobacco...? dude, you smoke it, you don't eat it. I'd say you're both pretty moronic (but aren't we all?), and one of you just may be emo.

Joking aside, it's all drugs. What's the difference between a cigarette, pot, and a damn cup of coffee in terms of drugs? they're all used as narcotics, and they're all addictive to some extent. It's hypocritical to do one and condemn the others.
Title: Re: Smoking in video games

The difference is tobacco has next to no effect, while being one of the most physically harmful, and one of the most addictive.
Got no problem with hallucenogenics though, which I do in order to roll a giant sticky ball around.
Don't tell me Katamari is not somehow made of LSD.

I'm emo. But I'm not one of those emos that go around cutting theirselves. That's just retarded.
