I haven't posted on these forums in years, but I came back and saw this and I had to post to tell you that your work looks magnificent. I hope you continue to press onward, as this looks like the start to a true HD recreation of FF7 like we were all hoping for.

Bootleg Questions / Re: [Tutorial] Tifa's Bootleg
« on: 2013-06-24 22:01:13 »
So that leaves me wondering if you actually uninstalled FF7 completely and deleted all of the files from your install directory before redoing bootleg. Leaving your previous install and doing bootleg on top of it is problematic. You seem like a tinkerer so I'm guessing you'll end up redoing bootleg 50 times before you're happy. Either learn the ff7 install image feature of bootleg, or use windows uninstaller to completely uninstall ff7music > ff7 then maybe even run Ccleaner and do a registry cleanup. THEN reinstall ff7 to C:\games\FF7 and redo bootleg (PITA). I really like PitBrat's install image function. Assuming windows 7 and 8 people have UAC turned off completely I think all this stuff works pretty flawlessly.

You're right in your guess - I am definitely a tinkerer, and I have quite a bit of experience modding various games and understanding the concepts of how they work. I have already uninstalled/reinstalled FF7 probably at least a dozen times while messing with various settings to get that "perfect installation". Each time, I have completely uninstalled the game, including removing the folder from my computer and clearing out the registry files with CCleaner. None of this provided a fix to my problem, and as such I decided to finally give up.

I probably should have been a little more careful in my response Saber.

I am not a retranslation user, for one. I uncheck retranslation completely in menu overhaul. If you want the retranslation you should be able to get Canon items and names anyway, though. At least, that is how DLPB designed it. And I do think it works, because I've tested this issue thoroughly before. The Americanized option works too, i think.

This is what I wound up doing in the end. I honestly got tired of messing with it so I just unchecked retranslation altogether using Bootleg. This way I can still get all the features I want, including the new menus and updated models/textures/sounds/ect - but without having to hassle with the changed item and character names.

I appreciate all your help - I've been a lurker on these forums for years and years. I actually helped back in the day when Aali's custom driver was a brand new development and we were all still trying to diagnose why everyone had so many crashes during the FMV sequences.

Bootleg Questions / Re: [Tutorial] Tifa's Bootleg

My goodness you went the long way. What I do (cus this really bugged me too) is uncheck the Menu Overhaul from bootleg install completely. Then install Menu Overhaul after bootleg is finished. Install Menu Overhaul by itself using this installer from DLPB. The menu overhaul options were one of the only things that got messed up in bootleg 40 and there was almost no documentation about this. DLPB has noted that there is an issue with Tough Script of some sort and is the likely cause. The Menu Overhaul options concerning the canon items and names work correctly when MO is installed separately after bootleg.

Well, no dice. I unchecked the Menu Overhaul so that none of it would install when I run bootleg. After bootleg finished, I ran the Menu Overhaul as you suggested and made sure "Use original names for characters" and "Use 'series canon' for item names" were checked. Went into the game and character names were still incorrect "Zeng" instead of "Tseng", etc. Item names were "Phoenix Tail" instead of "Phoenix Down", etc.

Also, a new problem arose that I have never had before. The font ingame changed from the original font to some type of modified font (assuming this came from the Menu Overhaul installer - which made the font spacing very poor in the menu and chat dialogue. (Characters were running into each other and in some cases overlapping).

I'm going to keep toying with this to see if I can yield any better results, but in case you have any ideas I wanted to post about it here in the meantime.

Bootleg Questions / Re: [Tutorial] Tifa's Bootleg
« on: 2013-06-24 05:55:42 »
Hi everyone!

I want to start off by saying how amazing Tifa's Bootleg is. It's working pretty much flawlessly and my favorite game of all time can now be enjoyed at even higher standards. However, I do have one small problem. I have searched all over the forums and have yet to find a fix for this problem - though it seems some others are also suffering from the same issue.

This is in reference to the text changes from the Menu Overhaul. Although I understand that the retranslation project makes the item and character names a correct translation, I like many people grew up with these "incorrect" character names and want to play with them, regardless of how wrong they may be. For example, Marin should be Marlene, and Zeng should be Tseng, etc. I have tried installing the Bootleg with both Canon names and Canon items checked and unchecked. (Completely uninstalling & deleting and trying the other option). Both options yield the same result. I am afraid this pretty much forces me into disabling the retranslation altogether - which really bums me out because other than the names I really enjoyed the added/corrected text.

Also, my materia spell names have changed to Fira, Firaga, etc despite BFE having "New Spell Names" unchecked.

Not sure what is going on here, or if there's even a fix for this. For the meantime, I painstakingly edited the kernel file manually with Wallmarket and changed all the spell names and item names back to what they should be - however this still does not resolve my canon names issue.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

"Process completed.
FMVs are OK."

Is what it said at the end of the test... :\

Dziugo made an excelent program just for this purpose! Its Gypt/YAMP, and you would have found it if you searched a little.
You use it to skip your movies.

And had you read my post thoroughly as Zack noted, I had already tried Gypt.  Unfortunately all it does is speed up the current game speed if pressed too early and when it gets to the video it crashes, or if I press it right when the video is supposed to load it will still crash anyways.  The only good Gypt does me is when I've swapped the videos out with ones that do work, I can skip the videos with Gypt, since there's no point in watching videos  that do not apply to the current point in the game.

No dice, unfortunately still receiving crashes on certain cutscenes.  The only way I can bypass it is by replacing a video that isn't working with one that does.  It's really annoying, and I can't use Gypt for YAMP because even if I try and skip the cutscene it will just fast forward the game and crash anyways.  I really cannot understand why some movies will work in game and others will not.  It makes absolutely no sense as they all use the exact same codec and are being loaded the same way.

So far the following cutscene movies have not worked:
-mkup.avi (After picking Cloud and Barrett's names, Cloud is supposed to look up at the mako reactor.)
-mk8.avi (After blowing up the first mako reactor, Jessie blows up a wall in order for AVALANCHE to escape the tunnel.)
-smk.avi (After defeating the hovering robo boss at the second mako reactor, he is supposed to crash through the railing.)
-monitor.avi (The guard in the Shinra tower sleeping as the camera pans in to one of the screens showing the elevator on floor 60.)

And the following movie sequences have worked:
-edioslogo.avi (Edios logo.)
-sqlogo.AVI (Squaresoft logo with the chocobos.)
-opening.avi (Introduction movie to FFVII.)
-northmk.avi (The first mako reactor explodes.)
-ontrain.avi (Cloud leaps on to the train from the bridge.)
-mainplr.avi (The train circles around Midgar.)
-soutmk.avi (Cloud hangs from the exploding second reactor and then falls.)
-plrexp.avi (The bomb in the pillar holding up the plate is detonated.)
-fallpl.avi (Barrett, Cloud, and Tifa swing away from the exploding plate.)

Alright, I think I've covered them all so far.  I'd like to see if we can figure out any similarities in the videos that do work and the videos that do not work.  I'll keep updating the list as I progress farther into the game.  (Note: All videos will play from the CD and the Hard Drive.)

I'm going to try it, after reading the posts in that thread the whole thing sounds very promising.  Thank you for that link!

11
That is the exact guide I followed to do my codecs.  However, it doesn't make sense that it could be a codec problem considering some videos work, while others do not.  All of the videos can be played on my hard drive and my CD, so it doesn't make sense why some would choose to work in game and others would crash it.

Unfortunately it happened again at another spot...However I have a feeling it's just going to keep happening, I made a thread about the whole problem here. http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=6950.0

Hey everyone, I'm desperately looking for help as I'm on my last hope with this whole situation.  For some reason some FMV cutscene sequences seem to work in the game, whereas others only seem to crash it.  I have tried researching all about this problem all over Google, these forums, and others as well, and have come up with no solution whatsoever.  My problem is as follows: The introduction video in the game works.  Cloud can get off the train, kill some baddies, and after you select Cloud and Barrett's names, there is supposed to be a video where Cloud glances up at one of the Mako Reactors, however that part of the game crashes for me.

I had Synergy Blades send me a save game, which is the first save point in the game, and all ran smoothly for a little bit.  I beat the boss, head out of the reactor, and the video played where the reactor explodes.  The next scene is where we're all sitting in the rubble, and Jessie plants a bomb in the rubble, and there is supposed to be a cutscene where it explodes.  Unfortunately this video crashes my game as well, and I really do not feel like having to get people to send me a save game to the next save for 95% of my game.

If anyone could possibly help me out, if they have ever experienced anything like the randomness of these FMV crashes, I'd greatly appreciate it.  Like I said, some videos in the game play fine, whereas others crash my game.  Before anyone asks, I do own the retail copy of the game, and all of the videos work fine on the CDs.  I also read a thread about transporting the videos onto my HDD, which some people said that helped issues they were having.  Unfortunately this made absolutely no difference in my case, and I am still having the problems.  I would appreciate any help I can get on this matter, as I have run out of ideas.  I've been messing with Final Fantasy 7, trying to get this whole thing to work, for the past two days, almost non-stop.  I loved this game 10 years ago, and I'd really love to replay it again.

Here are my system specs if this will help you guys out:

Windows XP Professional
Intel Pentium D 3.2 GHZ
Asus P5WD2
2 GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 7950 GT
Direct X 9.0c

Sorry that this is a dead topic, but I'm having the EXACT same issue as this fella here.  The intro sequence plays fine, and then cloud jumps off the train, I fight the two guards, and head over and talk to the AVALANCHE guys.  Then I enter my name for Cloud, and then Barrett talks to me, and I enter his name.  Right after he talks to me, a cut sequence is supposed to happen, where Cloud looks up at the Mako reactor, and then you continue on.  However, before that cut sequence can begin, the game crashes.  I can't get past this point and I have no save to send anyone, because this is before you even have access to a save point.  I tried running the game completely clean of any mods (other than the official patch), and it had the same effect as with mods enabled.  I would really appreciate any help I could get on this, because I cannot play the game! :(  Also, I turned off anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, and that did not help either.

My specs are:

Windows XP Professional
Intel Pentium D 3.2 GHZ
Asus P5WD2
2 GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 7950 GT

Please if anyone has any ideas, I'd really like to hear them.
