Final Fantasy 7 crashes on startup.

Intel Pentium something (3 I think, not a 4 anyway) 1GHz
GeForce 4 Ti4200
Windows XP Professional (although if someone knows a way to get it working on Linux I'd be even happier)

Here's the deal, when I start the game with 640x480 fullscreen I don't hear sounds or anything, just a crash. When I start at quarter-screen I hear the sound from the eidos-logo and then the game crashes. I have in some installation gotten as far as two 1/4th of the movies were showed on the screen and rest seemed to work, but I don't remember how.

Compability modes don't work either.

Do I need the service packs to get it to work btw?

What video drivers.....

I still don't know if the most recent have the 8 bit pallet disabled or not. But the 77.77, work fine with the game. Just use the TNT patch.

The 8bit pallet test must say Fail for the TNT patch to work.

You just select the Nvidia TNT option...and then pick Direct3d Hardware acceleration from the pulldown menu.

Also...you must install the movieplayer installation that is in the installation menu of the game. Or the movies won't play. Should be near the bottom. named movieplayer or something..

Or you can install the upside-down movie patch.... I hear that will install the video codec too.

I have the latest drivers from nivida.

Where can I find this TNT Patch? As I understand it there are two TNT Patches, wich one should I use then?

Should 8 bit palleted texture not pass when selecting TNT or Riva then? 'Cause when I don't have anything, everything passes.

I have installed the movieplayer that shipped with the game.

There is only one TNT Patch that I know of....

http://support.eidosinteractive.com/GI/CustomerSupport/FaqAnswer.jsp?faq=872&game=79&platform=3&problemType=5
(on the bottom)

The Test page must say Fail for the 8 bit palletization. After you overwrite the TNT patch, and select the Nvidia TNT option, it will replace "Fail" with "----".

After you get that working....you can run the Chocobo patch.

I haven't installed the newest video driver, as of yet.... So I don't know if it'll say Pass or Fail.... If it says Pass, the TNT patch isn't going to work. (not without giving more instructions, anyway....instructions that I haven't practiced myself since the Det drivers were version 14.xx instead of these 80.xx versions it's up to now. Instructions that are basicly a guess, on my part. Whether still true or not.)

Do I need the FV VII XP Patch or will the chocobo patch do the trick as well?
Thing is I can only find XP Patch 1.4, not the 1.2 which is recomended in the FAQ.

I'm trying a re-install of the game now. It did say "---" on the drivers now, and 320xsomething was dimmed, but the game still wouldn't start.

EDIT:
1. When I first installed FF7 the 8-bit thingie said "Pass", but the game did NOT work.
2. I installed the TNT_Riva thingie, did not work either.
3. I applied the chocobo patch, didn't work either.

How do I solve this? :(

1.02 :P

And it's not the "XP Patch" either. Just a regular patch, last that was released. XP Patch = bad.

Where do I find the 1.02 patch then? It's not on http://www.eidosinteractive.com/games/info.html?gmid=44 as you might think it would... :s

Um, if you read the FAQ, you should be able to find the 1.02 patch.  I link to it like three times.
Just for kicks, I'll update the FAQ now with a link where I first mention it.

....It's on the bottom, I said...

Under, "Related Patches".
All the official patches for FF7 are on the bottom.
The 1.02 patch *is* the Riva TNT patch.

And that Animevamp Winxp patch...is not an official patch. In fact... all they did was use the TNT patch mixed with the Chocobo patch....with a modified MIDI GM.dll instrument patch... and named it the WinXP patch. That patch is not supported here.... Mainly because they give no credit to the people that deserve it, and they modify a Windows System File without warning you first.
