General Discussion / The board URL
« on: 2001-11-19 19:17:00 »
I've tried to make an emergency overlay of the fixed forums, I don't know if it worked yet... if it did, we should've gotten rid of all HTML fragments lying around

General Discussion / FF9 PSX files
« on: 2001-11-12 22:33:00 »
There is a header in the FF9.IMG file, though there are no filenames or anything. I wrote the FF9Viewer app to extract the files, but it does no more than just that. What the files contain is anyone's guess, FF9 only references them by ID...

Joey: How should I know? All I know is that I had no problems extracting files and graphics from it, I don't know what strange approach the programs you're using employ. Have you tried copying the .IMG file to your hard drive? If it can be done, that pretty much answers it, no?

Besides, PSX graphics rippers can only search for .TIM headers and the likes, they can't magically recognize a bunch of bytes as images. "Ooh, this looks like an image, maybe if I put it this way...? Ah yes, that makes sense, this must be it" They search for specific bytes usually found only in .TIM files, meaning they can only recognize graphics stored using the default PSX way, which few PSX games do these days, anyway.

General Discussion / IMPORTANT: FORUM BACKUP
« on: 2001-11-09 16:12:00 »
I've just been informed that NextFF will move to another forum fairly soon, so I'm taking the liberty of backing up the forums. I'm not sure of the details, but for now, don't expect anything posted after this message to reappear after the server switch.

Either I or the SaiNt will let you know when it's safe to post again

...Which leads me to the conclusion that we shouldn't split the General forum. At least these days it's both active and (semi-) on topic.

I might restructure Feedback, though. Dunno about Tweaking & Tech-related, the border between them is pretty blurred these days... You will all just have to wait and see, I guess...

I use Getright, it's not the perfect program but it works for me.

General Discussion / FF9 PSX files
« on: 2001-11-09 10:09:00 »
Joey, what the hell are you on? Crack again?

FF9's data is not encoded in any way, at least no more than any other PSX game. Much like Xenogears or Chrono Cross, the data files are not in the CDFS file index, so they won't show up in Windows Explorer. FF9's CDFS index does have a FF9.IMG file that spans across all the data files, so it's kind of like a cross-over between the Xenogears file system and a normal, visible system.

But the data itself is very much accessible. Emus have trouble running it because it uses advanced PSX coding (as in *programming*), not because the data is encoded or unreachable. As soon as I got FF9, I extracted all the TetraMaster graphics, so that pretty much proves my point. I probably was the first to do so too  (I believe FFOnline uses the hacked-out graphics in their FF9 card reference page, btw)

:: issues yellow card on Darkness too, even though it was just a joke ::

I hate l33t-sp34k, the only time I might consider allowing it would be in references to something deliberately written in l33t, for humor or something. Like, MegaTokyo's famous strip.

Just so you know...

Penny Arcade rules... If I were to be forced by aliens with large toes and slimy fingers and ears looking a bit like m&m's to blatantly advertise for a site, it would definitely be PA.

General Discussion / Progress report on the new design
« on: 2001-11-05 18:36:00 »
Because, quite frankly, this design sucks. Although SaiNt's temporary theme provides at least some comfort to the eyes, the board needs something new.

When my new design is done, I might start working on an alternate version of it, not sure. Like, having a dark and a light version.

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / Machines

Why let you people have all the fun? Here are my humble machine specs (home-built):

1.0GHz Athlon
768MB RAM
50GB HD (4+16+26+4)
Geforce2 GTS 32MB
Pioneer DVD thingy
CDRW burner
Horribly overpriced 19" screen
Prolly a lot of other stuff

Oh well, I sorta got bored while writing it

« on: 2001-11-01 12:09:00 »
Let me just mark this historical event with a little post, right here.

On 2001-11-01, 11:42 GMT, the Newbie W-Cid made the 10,000th post to this message board. My my, it has grown considerably since the beginning. Why, I remember the good old days when the whole message board consisted of a hand-written CGI script by yours truly. And before that, when it hardly even deserved the name 'message board'.

Well anyway. This board would never have become what it is today if it weren't for the true believers in it (you know who you are). You provided consistency when the laws of physics argued for complete chaos ^^

Oh, and of course, if it weren't for the rest of the users here, we probably wouldn't even have reached 5000 posts now. So, if you are one of those individuals who think post counts and site hits matter, go ahead and feel proud of yourself

(ficedula, please correct me if I've got the DST for GMT wrong)

oooh, I recognize that one. That's poor browser handling actually, the code is javascript and should never be visible to the user like that

...which might not always be what you want, for that matter   For example, what if the proggie in question only works with a specific DLL? Not a very common problem, I grant you, but still ^^

« on: 2001-10-16 16:18:00 »
Right, I've come across this small annoyance. Dunno if there's an option for it or not, but I haven't been able to find one.

Take a look at this picture: My Visual C++ projects folder.

See anything wrong with it? Indeed, the folders are slightly out of order. Take the two folders "FF9Viewer" and "FF73D". WinXP apparently sees "FF73" and considers it as greater than "FF9", since 73 indeed is greater than 9. Annoying as hell though, and it's messing up my view of things completely. Anyone know any way to revert to the old sorting algorithm found in ...well, any other OS?

General Discussion / Found sth. on the web 'bout 'Qhimm'
« on: 2001-10-16 14:56:00 »
I did pick the name "Qhimm" because it was so oddly obscure no one else had thought about it. Do a search for the common misspelling "Quimm" though, and you'll fetch a truckload of hits.

Heh, I made the rather surprising choice of overwriting Windows 2000 with Windows XP. Professional version, but still. Let's just see how the stability decreases/increases (well, it *could* happen)...

What I was a bit worried about was that my own optimizations lessened the maximum compression level of gzip. Oh well, it would be relatively small.

After a quick studying period... this is how gzip works:

The line ob_start("ob_gzhandler"); tells PHP not to send the data directly to the browser, and instead store it in a temporary buffer. This buffer is then sent to the gzip handler which will determine your browser capabilities. If your browser supports gzip compression, the handler will compress the data and send it, otherwise it sends it directly.

Now... what this in fact means is that a lot of my client-side processing efforts could've been for nothing  , since all it does is remove redundant information - just like gzip compression. Oh well, I'm not going to undo all my work *now*... =)

Besides, client-side processing is purrrdy. I just how everyone uses javascript-enabled browsers...

Oh well, you know what they say. Work is a good healer.

Anyway, I've completed most of the work on the topic display pages. This is one of the most important (and trickiest) parts of the board, but let me remind you: the real work is to convert the small bits, scattered through-out the board in raw, ugly HTML code. It could take a while, so I thought I'd create a poll for it.

And before y'all go making polls on your own, poll access is to be restricted to moderators&above only. Any "unauthorized" polls will be deleted on sight. This is partly cause I don't want the board cluttered up with unnecessary polls, and mainly because the poll system isn't exactly integrated into phpBB in a smooth way; to make it look good in the new design, a lot of stuff will have to be re-written. The less polls out there to convert, the better.
