3ds to .p conversion
« on: 2006-05-14 16:37:27 »
Hi there!

I was wondering if it was possible to make a program that will convert 3ds max files to make them work in ff7 game.  We could make the NPC PC project even better with this.

Look here the kind of head we could get:

I made this some times ago.  It's not finished yet though but if we could get this ingame it would be great isn't it ??

So what do you think ???

Well see you.

Nice model stormmedia.  Would you happen to know if their are any limitations to the models put into FF7?  Such as number of polygons and whatnot.  There were some older games I had that would crash becuase the game could not process it.  If there are not any limitations, than I suppose the sky is the limit.  I know there are quite a few people here with a talent for 3ds max.

I guess the first step is understanding the .p file format.  I would try L. Spiro's excellent Memory Hacking Tools.  You can run the game and see how the game uses the format.  This would give you the clues you need to start on a converting tool you wish for.

Well it's not realy a model it's just a try I gave to 3ds some time ago .. I don't realy know much of the program but I know enough for what the game can take.  I don't think there is any polygone limite.  All I want is to convert what I do in 3ds in ff7 so I can use it in the NPC RC project.

Right, and you will need to know how to decode the file format.  I would ask mirex about Biturn or give the MemHack a try.

If it's not a model, then what is it?  :-)

I get the idea it's more of something he cooked up not related to Final Fantasy VII. He wants to make Final Fantasy VII models like this, though, I think is the idea.

In fact it was my first true try on 3ds, I mean it's just a test.  I might use it for FF7 though but I gonna modify it ... and finish it of course.

Oh brother, I was just kidding around. :-)

You said it wasn't a model, but it is.  It has polygons yes?  Maybe some vertices?

Gotcha, I know it is not a final product.  It's a work in progress, and I just commented how it was comming along nicely.

Well I do hope you get that 3ds to .p converter you want.  With a tool like that just imagine the possibilities.  :-o

I have no idea how to save data from .3ds into .p , the .p file is kinda complicated. Someone else has to investigate it, my hands are quite full at the moment.

Okey.  Thanks for your answers.  I don't realy know how to decode the .p so .. Well if anyone will ever be able to do it please let me know I could use it.

See you.

We will be able to create new .p files from scratch.
Most of the format is decoded, it will be a bit tricky, but it should not be too hard to write a tool or plugin that can do that.

Unfortunately, I'm extremely busy at university right now, so I don't have the time to take care of that right now...
And there are still sooo many file formats that wait to get decoded... :|

I know nothing about how the code works to change the .p file to .3ds. So dont get mad at me if im wrong but Technically the conversion from .p to 3ds says something pretty much like change this to that and that to this. Well wouldnt it work just to tell it to do the opposite????? I really dont know how it works but it would be cool if some one could make a converter for .3ds to .p!

Well you can make new polygons in Kimera but i think it will be hard to make a completley new one.
