I've also just started experiencing this crash but I don't know why.

When I try to use Hyper Jump (which I'm doing to get Cid's next Limit break, over and over) the game crashes. I used it twice absolutely fine, but now everytime I use it I get a crash.

My app.log says this:

Clearly it's repeating because there's a texture file it can't find, but I don't think any could have become corrupt? I haven't change any graphical settings from before when it was working until now.

It's necessary to close threads in which people who don't read the rules before posting state they have the pirated version, because the rules very clearly and explicitly state what is considered piracy and the reason we don't assist those with a pirated version.

Leaving them open for discussion results in:

New Poster: plz halp v got ultimaff7 n can't get modz 2 wurk!!! halphalp!!!

Mod: We do not condone pirated software and will not help you.

New poster: bt I wantz AC modelz in mah gaem nao!!!!!

And the discussion would go on. Hence closing of the threads.

Lex, you do realize.that the majority of our electronics and the componates come from japan or japanese companies?  Don't underestimate how much power they have over a lot of things here in the states.

I was talking about getting a C & D from Square, which has nothing to do with American law. Again, how much power Japanese electronics have over the world, not just the North American countries, has nothing to do with the discussion of the piracy of this particular game.

The only way the US is relevant in this conversation is when considering the populations of people with access to this game. As this site/ forum is not based in the US or Canada, and Square Enix are mainly based in Japan, US law is irrelevant.

EDIT:
Quote from: Swayless
As far as it being released on psn/ps3, that's fine and dandy but I personally don't have 300 plus bucks to spend on a gaming rig right now, def not one that lostvits backwards comparability shortly after coming out.

Sorry, just noticed this. If someone wanted to play the game that badly they could always just buy the original PSX version and use ePSXe. That's a bit of a grey area in itself, but you can make the game look excellent with some of those openGL plugins.

None of the keys work. The eidos logo doesn't show up. Do you think that has to do with this?

Have you tried changing your resolution back to what it was when it was working? Also, why did you change it to a lower one?

PitBrat - What are the mixture of field background packs that you use for the "bootleg" preset for backgrounds? I've been doing a playthrough and I chose this preset, noticed a few oddities. Bear in mind I only started taking screenshots at the Forgotten City:-

And my personal favourite-

I mean holy fuck. That certainly raped any emotion I had for the scene.

Are you sure it's frozen? I've never heard of it crashing there before, and it doesn't move so you wouldn't be able to tell. Try using the numpad keys on your keyboard.

Isn't this site based in the EU?

But that's beside the point. I'm not saying that this would be the only place to get it, just that the forum is semi covering itself by being outwardly opposed to piracy, and there's no reason to face the risks associated with changing that.

Bas, what I meant was that if you put yourself in that situation, you would not buy the game.

If you're looking to play Final Fantasy VII, and this site condoned piracy, then a person would not buy it from PSN - they'd get it on the internet for their PC. Therefore it still would hurt their sales. If we did condone it, you can almost guarantee we'd get a C & D because it would impact money they make from the PSN version.

That's what I meant.

And I really don't think America has anything to do with it, considering they're in Japan.

I agree with a couple of your points, and I'm sure everyone else does too. But the fact is, supporting pirated version = a higher risk of C & D from Square.

Also, if you knew you could only mod the PC version, and get it for free, why the hell would you bother with the PSN version if the objective is just to play the game? Short answer: you wouldn't.

Therefore supporting pirated software versions must remain the rule, if this community wants to continue with relatively free licence. Yes, it's quite restrictive (no model rips from other compilation titles, etc) but I also think that this inspires creativity.

I managed to make the analogue pretend it was digital using motioninjoy, which is marginally better than using the D-Pad. But still not as good as real analogue, which may never happen :(

There was a patch years ago (part of YAMP I believe) and there's a more recent one cutting about somewhere. They both work fine.

113
I'm not sure what you mean by legit download. Did you buy the game in the store legit, but download the disc images off the internet anyway? That won't do, you have to make the images yourself. Even though ethically they may be pretty much the same, there's no way to ensure the download won't be messed up in some way, such as having mods already installed, being the Ultima Edition, or other changes.

If you rip it from discs you purchased, that's not downloading, that's ripping. It's perfectly acceptable, but try not to use the word download because that's not what it is and it'll just confuse people. Downloading means you get it from the internet.

My god Covarr. Sometimes you are the Cave Johnson to my GLaDOS, as in this scene..

You may be using the analog stick, but it's still digital control. You're not getting different speeds based on how far you push it, and you're not getting more than eight directions. 'Tis not true analog control. The game doesn't even support it.

Might be possible to add, but it'd require brand new code. No simple script could fix it.

See, you get what I'm talking about!

Imagine the difference it would make to FF7 to play with an analogue stick and have a slight push be walk and a full push be run? *oh* ... dare to dream.

That and proper widescreen support = immediate pants creamage.

115
You'r not actually playing the game in widescreen, you're stretching the game to fit your screen. If you're playing the game the way it's supposed to be played (you change "aspect ratio" to "yes" or tick it and write cfg) then you'd have black bars at the side.

I'm asking if there's a way to play the game in it's native aspect ratio and remove the bars. It's been done on many different emulation platforms and old PC games, but I don't know how or I'd do it myself.

EDIT: Here is an example of what I'm talking about. The game was built to play in 4:3 but in this emulator the extra geometry is added.

The only areas this would negatively affect in FF7 is the menu and possibly the battles, but with the new interface it would look absolutely fine even if the interface is not exactly in the corners. And who actually cares if the menu has black bars at the side?

It's maybe something I can resolve with motioninjoy (that driver is BEASTLY), but I still won't have analogue control, I'll just be using the analogue stick to fool the game into thinking I have D-Pad control.

I do, but only because I haven't actually bought a new one to replace it yet after buying a new PC last month.

I envy your ability to play FF7 in it's native aspect ratio without horrific black bars at the side >_>

I use motioninjoy on my PS3 gamepad. I tried mapping the analogue stick to up, down, left, right in game and it doesn't even register the movement. Works fine on D-Pad though.

Shouldn't there be a way to properly implement analogue in FF8 though? Since it did originally have it. Maybe they removed it in the porting process or something.

Gameplay / Analogue controller support?

Lately I feel like I've been spamming this board slightly with niggling issues, so I thought I'd round it off with this one.

It's been years since I've played FF7 from start to finish, but for some reason my old love for the game was totally rekindled yesterday and I can't stop playing it. I have dipped in and out to see what mods have looked like, but usually end up stopping on the cargo ship (I don't know why, I always seem to stop playing there). The only (and I really mean only) huge thing that's bothering me playing it now is the awkward D-pad controls.

I realise that the original FF7 never actually had analogue support, so it may be totally out of the question. If it is, then...

FF8. What's the dealio there? The original had analogue support, and if the PC uses the same/ similar files, it should certainly be possible. There would obviously need to be some sort of plugin to properly map the controls.

I'd be willing to actually learn and have a look myself, but I don't have a clue where the data for the control mechanisms are stored. Somewhere in the .exe?

Is there a way to implement widescreen? Similar to an emulator's "extra geom" function. I imagine this would be much easier to do here than in an emulator. The stretched aspect ratio can sometimes look off, and I honestly don't know anyone who still has a 4:3 monitor.

I always noticed that the size comparrison from cloud to the towns or building on the world map was . . . well bizzare lol.

It's like that in pretty much every FF game with a world map.

I was actually thinking this today... I wonder if theres a way to double the size of the ingame map or something? If that could be done, you could just halve the encounter rate. Et voila.

With the new textures, it would look awesome! Also these days when I pan my camera around the whole globe looks like playdough.

Before, when you unticked shaders was a mistake. You have to tick shaders, and untick postprocessing. Postprocessing is what caused the blurry brightness.

If you didn't install the higher quality backgrounds, then yes you'll have to reinstall. But even the new backgrounds don't look that good, as they're just upscaled and filtered. It's a limitation I'm afraid.

Yeah, I ran it last night and found a tutorial vid from timu right off the bat

I guess I just assumed there weren't any out there because i didn't ever notice any in my other model related searches!

The whole model creation/ importing thing had a massive vogue here years ago because of the release of Crisis Core and DoC. But then around the time the first Dissidia was released, it was decided that importing excellent looking models was evil to avoid a C & D from Square.

It's really a shame they're not a bit more like Capcom, who love it when people rip their models :(

Finally, I can't recall who said it, but someone did say that you shouldn't stick to one franchise / developer. To this point, I proffer NaughtyDog. Never have I played a bad ND game. :D

I agree, Naughty Dog are amazing.

My reinstall did the trick. I believe this is because of the part where it tells you to configure the midi in the "new" FF7Config, I just made sure I had picked HDMI as my audio output source - remember this is only for the sound effects as the music is handled by FF7Music.

Also, if you're having problems with music not playing or coming out of a different sound card or something, just manually start FF7Music (not the bootleg loader!), click "Configure" (like the olden days) and then manually change your audio output source.
