There used to be a ton of tutorials floating around (I think these all sprung up around 2008-ish) so using the search function is your friend. I would be more helpful and do it myself, but I'm using my phone to write this and I already have enough hatred for the site search function.

127
Yes the FMV's do that on mine too, probably because their sound isn't controlled by FF7Music, same as the sound effects. I'm currently installing the latest bootleg, I'll let you know if that has made any difference.

128
I've right clicked and disabled all but HDMI, doesn't work. If I do that the game refuses to start and I get an error saying "unable to load sound driver" obviously because the game is trying to use audio that is no longer "there" :(

Sad bunny.

EDIT: Reinstalling bootleg has resolved this issues. See the bootleg thread for details.

This MAY belong in audio, as it relates to audio, but I'm sure it's the driver causing the issue. Feel free to correct me if this is not the case.

So I play using a laptop connected to my HDTV using a HDMI cable. In addition to this as an audio output source, my laptop also has another 2. Manually selecting HDMI as the audio output allows the music to play correctly.

HOWEVER, sound effects play through the laptop speakers. They are not the default output source in Windows, HDMI is. This is easy to resolve by opening FF7Config and again manually selecting HDMI as the output source. But as I am then required to run the driver registry again, it resets the settings and I'm back to my crappy laptop speakers.

I can play the game in crap quality with good sound, or good quality with crap sound effects. And obviously it's irritating that the music is playing correctly when the sound effects are not.

Is there a way around this?

Thanks for the reply.

I recall reading a post about FF7Music not working with HDMI audio.

It's working fine with mine at the moment. The problem I was having was I'm using a laptop hooked up to my HDTV using an HDMI cable. As such there are 3 audio output sources.

My laptop has 2, and then theres obviously HDMI. Because FF7Music handles the music, it's easy to change to that as an output source.

But the sound effects are playing through the laptop audio card. The only way to fix this is to open the ORIGINAL FF7Config and manually choose the output source as HDMI audio, which is easy enough.

But then you have to run the registry file for Aali's driver, which resets this. I'm hoping there'll be a fix soon.

Yes I knew that. Still pisses me off though!

Final Fantim's tracks are looping OGG in that YouTube video btw, but I am obviously using FF7Music.

EDIT: So I just tested it using the .wav file and this seems to resolve it on my setup aswell, indicating an issue with buffering/ FF7Music as DLPB suggested.

If I understood even a hint of programming I would dedicate all my free time to developing something better than that annoying ass program. Much respect for what it's given us, but it is about time it was implemented better in the game rather than having to run a second program all the time. It's like 10 years old now!! Hahahaha.

EDIT 2 (And I rarely edit my posts, I've done this so much recently it's irritating me): After much testing between me and DLPB it appears the issue is based on buffering, filetype and perhaps hardware.

The following has been noted:

1. There is a massive delay on original midi. Longer than the two in the vid using FF7Music.

2. DLPB was able to have it resolved using a .wav file. This did not work perfectly for me, but was miles better.

3. Manually reducing buffer time causes the sound to be crap. I had no sound below a certain level.

4. Hardware may be a factor - DLPB was able to change buffer length to 50ms, the lowest I can set mine is 200ms. We used the same out_wave.dll.

So it's fixable. But still really fucking annoying.

The only thing I really disliked about VIII was the being unable to return to any towns after disc 3 part. Not that any of them were super duper interesting, but it was always nice in VII before knowing the game inside out to be able to go back and hear random opinions on current events XD.

A poll might be a good idea.

Agreed. You know i've noticed, we have so few of those here, which is odd considering the spirit of the forum.

135
And here is a video to show you all what I mean.

PSX vs. PC Comparison.

136
I had no idea this had advanced so far. Truly sexual work PitBrat.

Question 4 still stands though, do I have to do a fresh install? I know that'll probably yield the best results... I just hate doing FF7Music all over again. Covarr was awesome when he first released that original tutorial, but I still had to work my ass off doing all sorts of random shit to get it to work. Same with the last bootleg.

I'm a bigger fan of the newest Ice, just for the record.

138
I'm going to post this now before I regret not posting it later, because I'm finally in the mood to do another incredibly long install of this on my laptop (thanks to you PitBrat it's a lot less time than I'd normally spend installing all of these).

1. I have Bootleg0002B8, I know it's ancient history now. What's the newest version and is that the one linked to in the first post?

2. I individually downloaded all the Bootleg0002B8 files, is there a way to check which mods have been updated or added since then? I think all the NPC models had been completed a while back.

3. I stopped playing when I had a problem with boss battles happening at random places (was supposed to fight motorball at the end of the highway, instead somehow warped back to the elevator fight with Hundred and Heli Gunner), did we find out why that happened and was the issue resolved? Obviously I could easily just replace it with a stock "scene.bin", but I was worried other stuff was screwed up too.

4. Having already used Bootleg0002B8 to install, do I have to completely uninstall the game and do a fresh install to use the latest one?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Lex, would you mind posting hardware specs? may help, i can't fathom that any PC in the modern era couldn't play FF7 lagless. But who knows

Irrelevant, there is no lag at all. The music simply begins later than it should, on (I'm assuming) everyone's version of FF7 PC. As is in the original post, the PSX version starts the music immediately when the materia hits the ground.

EDIT: I just re read that and it sounds a bit rude, so I'm sorry if it read that way to you lol. I have a laptop and a desktop, and since lurking here in 2002-3 I've had it installed on 9 seperate "rigs". The "music delay" happened on every one.

My current install is on my desktop.

Intel Core I7
Nvidia GTX 550i
8GB RAM
250gb SSD

Again, 9 different computers, so I'm pretty damn positive the problem is somewhere in the game and not with all 9 computers! Hahaha.

EDIT 2: Not that it matters, but I've had 2 different copies of FFVII over the period of those 9 computers, I lost my original years ago and got another recently.

Sadly he won't be the next president, but the front-runner is perfectly decent too.

Aww that's poor. Why won't he be the next president?

141
I realise that, but I'm pretty sure that "lag" happens all over the place in game, it's just far more noticeable on the death scene because the music starts at such a crucial moment. There aren't really any other moments like that in the game as far as I remember, are there?

I liked squall, the whole point of his character was that he was a sociopath.  Sociopaths do not go round partying and rave dancing.   It was a good story.  All the stories of FF were decent up to X in my view, and after that they got sloppy and amateurish.  Just like the standard.  :)

I loved Squall. But he was in no way a sociopath! Hahaha. I think you've misused the word there. Look up the clinical definition of sociopath. I agree he had anti social qualities in the beginning of the game, but that was a completely forced/ fake attitude to deal with the abandonment complex.

The point of Squall's character is that he's in emotional turmoil from the very beginning but maintains his composure to focus. He is able to do this by keeping himself seperate from everyone, but then is surrounded by people who wear him down. Cracks start to show in his lone wolf resolve. He meets Rinoa, he becomes the leader of Balamb Garden. Shit goes down with Rinoa. Walls come down, very very emotional person. Almost the complete opposite of sociopathic, though I can see why someone who didn't properly know what it meant would think that.

yeah that one was baffling I agree...  norg was the founder and recluse of garden... he formed it with Martine if I recall...  But he just pops up one day as "oh yeah, this dude lives in the basement and he is the owner"  He is mentioned again in certain NPC Shumi discussions.

Parts of ff8 were really well done, others were sloppy and forced.  Same with IX and Necron.

I dunno why they localised it to NORG and not just Norg or Nog.

There are bits in every FF that are really well done or sloppy and forced IMO, though it's subjective.

Hey DLPB I got your message on MSN earlier I've just been so hung over all day that I literally have not moved from my bed. Unproductive day, but so worth it.

Anyway, would changing the frame not fix it anyway? Even though the script is right and the same as the PSX, surely telling it to start earlier than it's actually supposed to would cause it to start in sync with the video?

Or have you tried that already and it didn't work?

EDIT: I feel I should add that I would test it myself but recently I've been using the laptop a lot for uni and my main install is on my desktop.

144
Confusing terminology is confusing. It's fine if you bought it in a store.

Again most of those things are true, but if we're talking about how linear the game is, it's very similar to how linear X was. That's all I'm saying. There are obviously other things about XIII that make it a worse game than X, but they're still both similarly linear in the same way.

146
So in Aerith's death scene, I have a slight niggling problem that I've never mentioned before because it's so damn inconsequential.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but here goes.

Watch the FMV. Skip straight to around 0:45 if you can't be bothered watching the bit before it. In the PSX version, the music begins at almost precisely the exact moment the materia hits the ground, creating what I think is a very emotional effect.

In the PC version, there is a delay. And not just with FF7 music. Even with the horrible original MIDI, there is a delay of about 1 second before the music starts.

Is there any way to fix this? I know the music isn't attached to the video in this instance, so what would we have to edit in order to make it right? Is it even possible?

While that's true, it's still just as linear. The only thing that takes away slightly from that linearity is to postpone progression of the story to talk to people, and that it occasionally takes effort to actually look for treasure chests. It's all an illusion put there to detract from the linearity, and the problem with the narrative in XIII is that there is no such illusion.

While I agree that X had far more to do, the way the narrative is carried is very similar. To boil it down to it's simplest terms, you can't do anything but progress the story until you hit the Calm Lands/ Zanarkand. Then it opens up a bit. In this respect, it's actually very very similar to XIII, where you can't do anything but progress the story until you hit the Archylte Steppe.

The only real difference in XIII is that you can't go backwards.

Time? Resources? Because the link was added by a copy-editor rather than the author? There could be all sorts of legitimate reasons.

Cool. Be that as it may, I don't think it excuses the shoddiness of the severely outdated information it provides, considering it's a PC World article.

But really, if it's truly to be released in 2013/2014, that's 7/8 years of development. It's just CRAZY!!!!
