7th Heaven / Re: Intermittent Crashing After Battles
« on: 2020-05-04 14:35:32 »
the reason why 2.1 will solve the issue is because they are officially implementing FFnX into 7th heaven, at least I am pretty sure.
The current version of FFNx will not be in 7H 2.1. It is our first update since 2.0's release and the focus has been ironing out several small bugs and a couple of major ones, as well as adding some nice new features to 7th Heaven. An update to the latest stable release of FFNx is on the roadmap for 7H 2.2, as has been discussed with TrueOdin.

Also, I want to clear up a misconception. an early FFNx is already in 7H 2.0. The slightly altered version in 7H 2.0 was to remove a crashing bug that affected world map and spell textures, as well as to clean up the cfg file and UI to be as simple and user-friendly as possible plus setting the best defaults from our testing. These are not competing drivers and I have no desire to maintain a fork of one. It was the most recent and stable version of it at the time 7H went into beta.

Just after release, I started playing with FFNx and unfortunately it was not something I was happy with stability or performance wise. I stand by that assessment even if it may be taken personally, or is unpopular because people wanted The New Shiny Thing (tm) right NOW. I could have expressed my frustration with it better; one of my flaws. With that said, FFNx has had a couple more months to "bake" and many more people are starting to use and test it so I see a lot of bugs being found and fixed. So, when 7H 2.1 is done, focus can be started to integrate an updated FFNx (which should be even better by then) with 7H 2.2 without half-assing it.

It's a known issue. A memory allocation "bug", actually, limitation of FF7 because it is 32-bit and was never designed for the mods we're pushing through to it. The OS refuses to allocate the memory, the driver doesn't know how to handle it, and it crashes. This will be fixed in 7H 2.1 (hopefully out in a few weeks or so). Most people are crashing if their RAM usage gets around 900MB or above (you can check this by turning on stats overlay or titlebar in the game driver settings). Certain mods may significantly increase your RAM usage so you should try mixing up what mods you use and see what works for you. High poly 3D models are the quickest way to eat up your RAM.

Alternately, you can download an alternate driver for now (FFNx). It doesn't always prevent crashes for everybody, every time, but its solution to handle this is to limit the RAM usage to 1GB and not allow anymore textures to load once that limit is reached, so you may see empty (black) textures like a checkerboard on your screen.

Got a consistent hard crash at the Nibelheim flashback sequence using 7th Heaven.

It's right at the part where you are in the truck with Sephiroth and get attacked (by a dragon if I recall) then it cuts to black, you hear the battle sound + music and it just stays on a black screen.

Tried going through the sequence turning off each mod and then with all mods turned off and the crash still happens...

Is there anyway to fix this? Can't progress the game at all at the moment.

I looked into this a little more for you. Open up Black Chocobo and open up your last save game just before your crash. Make sure your game moment/main progression is LESS than 384 (Game Progress tab) and then go to the Location tab.

On the location tab, check the little box at the top that says "save location changes" and double click on the field called "nivgate". If you can't find it, sort the list alphabetically by clicking the "filename" column at the top. Click File>Save and go back into the game and load the save. You'll pretty much be right where you left off after the battle with only missing Cloud mentioning he was mesmerized by how strong Sephiroth is.

Your copy of the game is pirated. FF7 is on sale right now on the Steam Store for $5.99.

I've not heard of this before from anyone and seems to work for me. The fact that you said you're trying without mods and it still crashes, suggests an issue with your game installation. Have you tried running the ff7.exe or ff7_en.exe by itself outside of 7H? You could also possibly use Black Chocobo to edit your save file to skip past that moment but it may be difficult because it is a scripted scene. You may need to copy your save game file between the 1998 (FF7\save\) and Steam versions (Documents\Square Enix\FINAL FANTASY VII Steam\user_xxx) in order for one exe or the other to "see" your save.

Has anyone else had a crash happen when you get the PHS for the first time?  As soon as the menu opens and you try to select a character there is a crash.
I experienced that on a very, very early non-public release of a UI mod. Of course, always make sure your mods are up to date, but you can typically disable them until you find the culprit then contact the mod author for assistance.

I need help to make my hori auto turbo controller to work on 7th heaven 2.0 please

i tried mapping the keys that did not work
You've been given countless things to try from numerous people. I got the vibe you were too busy complaining to actually try the suggestions offered to you as one of them is bound to work. With that said, 7H 2.1 is changing how it handles controls. That may actually be a bad thing for you and make the problem worse, I can't say. It may fix everything. You stated 1.x worked, so just use that for the time being. You can run 99.9% of all mods in exactly the same way.

I am having the same problem. I think I see what you are talking about but not exactly sure what to do. under ff7 exe i see ff7 folder. under movies i see no folder. under textures i see no folder. under library i see a folder temp. PLEASE HELP. I been messing with this for the last 2 days I am about to give up.

I'm sorry you're having issues, and on a normal installation 7H will automatically set these for you. Something would have gotten hosed up in your registry. You might have saved yourself a lot of time and frustration if you started with looking at the Help documentation first (which I recommend everyone always do first). Click Help in the menu bar (where Play, Settings, Tools, Help are). Click "Using 7th Heaven" and go to section 4. Settings>General Settings. You'll see a screenshot of what the settings normally look like as well as a description of each. If one or more of the folders don't exist, you can manually create them first, then select them from 7H.

Is anyone getting the following error:
"Fail to load BTCE.yos"

This happens when I start a new game or load a saved game
It only occurs when I turn on the Field Textures from Qhimm.
Please report the Qhimm Catalog mod issues in this thread so Alyza investigate and fix the issue: http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=15902.0

After some quick on/off active switch changes, turns out the battle will only crash if my Battle Models mods are on. I'm using the 'ninostyle' model option for Cloud. I fiddled around with a few options (like turning off Shinra Soldier changes, weapon changes, different Cloud models) and the most I got was the battle screen loaded with nothing on it and promptly froze.

Since the issue is with the Qhimm mods, see my previous response above. Also, it is a good idea to make sure your load order is correct to prevent a lot of mod-related issues. Click the "auto sort" button on the right (the one with the 1/9 and up/down arrows).

Unfortunately, debugging is broken in the current release of 7H and was fixed literally the day after once we became aware of it. Since it was such a small change, we decided to wait to incorporate it into the next release. But that has nothing to do with your issue anyway.

The default keys are currently the 1998 controls which are the numpad buttons. Enter is OK, + is Menu, 2, 4, 6, 8 are your movement keys, etc. If you want to change from the defaults to another preset, like Steam, or if you want to import your own controls directly from the game, go to 7H>Settings>Game Launcher>Controls.

FF7 Tools / Re: [PC] Yet Another Multi-Patcher - YAMP
« on: 2020-05-02 03:36:32 »
7H won't accept edits to the original EXE. It's not safe and breaks things. Instead, run your patch, then rename your ff7.exe to something like ff7_mycustom.exe. Then open Settings>General Settings, and point the ff7 exe to the new exe you want to use.

109
What mods do you use?

Oh boy, that's probably a whole post on its own. A couple of people have asked, so I might post something soon. I go back and forth between a couple of them as well and still trying to figure out what I like best. Technically, if I had to organize them for different ways to play, I'd have 3 profiles. Maybe I could post the 3 types of play and the mods used for each setup/profile and people would be able to kind of line up their own preferences more or less with one of them.

110
Program Files is what is key, not steamapps necessarily. You can create a new Steam library outside of Program Files and use that if you want. You don't need the duplicate copy of FF7 on your system either, you can delete the one in your Program Files\Steam...\. You can point the Steam UI to the ff7_en.exe file in your C:\Games folder to still launch from Steam. The Steam exe cannot use mods but can have achievements and cloud saves. The ff7.exe can be modded but doesn't have the Steam features.

Ochu might have some of the tweaks you're looking for, I'm not sure. Run the game first, then run Ochu as administrator.

I'm glad I kept that in there. People call me crazy for keeping it because nobody would use it, or know what it is, but I knew that someone out there would take advantage of the "programs to launch" feature. So thank you.

There's no explicit hotkey, just the /launch parameter. On my current release (prob same as public release) I just have to press tab once then space bar for Play.

Catalogs / Re: [FF7] Qhimm Catalog 3.0 Reports / Requests
« on: 2020-05-02 02:45:36 »
Yeah, the Resize and NT deactivate is normal. I wrote that in to do automatically because they both share the flevel file that cause an immediate launch crash in my testing.

I think NT has a char folder, which is where field models are stored. There could be compatibility issues there. Overall, the QC - Field Models 3.0 is a rushed release that needs more work. That’s my fault, and I’ll always apologize for the headaches it’s causing (myself included).

As said, don't be too hard on yourself. The work you've done/do is amazing and we all appreciate it. It's impossible to catch everything, even in your own created mods...there's just so many options and a lot going on. Minor things and we'll just eagerly await your next update. :-)

113
7H 2.0 requires that you have the English language version of the game installed. 2.1 will work with other languages in a future update.

114
No, you don't need to rename your exe. It only states that the exe that you're using to run the game must be ff7.exe (which is the default when using 7th Heaven, and is included).

But that's neither here nor there because the problem is that you have a pirated copy of the game. FF7 is currently on sale for $5.99. Go buy it.

115
No problem. I'm happy to say that crashing should largely be a problem of the past with the next update.

116
It would be great however to know what uses most cache so I can potentially go longer without saving, for parts
of the game where there's no save point for a while.

You kind of just have to experiment. Different people get different results even with the same mods. Turn on Save/PHS Anywhere so you can save whenever you want, but don't save during a scripted scene or you may get stuck there. Always a good idea to rotate your saves and don't just keep overwriting the same one over and over.

Is the FFNX driver going to be implemented at some point? I'm interested in using a DDS pack but from what I've read you have to kind of install FFNX as workaround to the 7th Heaven driver and I just don't feel like doing that lol.

It's kind of on an unofficial roadmap. Other things are being worked on and are the primary focus for 7th Heaven 2.1. If all goes according to plan 7H 2.1 will actually have a fixed custom driver in place anyway. Then for the following update it is planned to add FFNx as an option so that it can be tested heavily by a larger user base and issues ironed out. If it is mature enough and accepted by the community, it would become the default option.

118
Yes, of course, BotW was awesome too. I think OoT just adds the nostalgia effect a little more since I was younger playing it. And the move to N64 blew my mind for things like Zelda and Mario when I had grown up on NES/SNES/Genesis. I think A Link to the Past would have to be my favorite of all time.

The last good Zelda. Let the flame wars begin!

Hi I've been getting an illegal character error everytime I try to launch 7th Heaven 2.0 even after uninstalling and re-installing as well as deleting the workshop several times here's the text from the applog:

FF7Version Detected: Original98 (or Game Converted) with installation path: *:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\

Your installation path starts with an asterisk, which is obviously invalid. How you managed to get an asterisk for your drive letter, I don't know. Look for that path in your registry and fix it.

121
You will probably crash randomly no matter what. I'd recommend you turn on the stats titlebar and play in windowed mode. If you see your texture cache getting close to the limit (2048MB is default) and/or your RAM usage is 900MB or more, you're almost guaranteed to have a crash soon.

I personally play with mods that keep my RAM usage closer to 500MB and I don't crash anymore. Work/investigation is being done on the game driver to see if it can be improved to be more stable, but it is what it is for now.

I wish this site notified of responses to posts, but that is my issue.  After a couple of days I forgot I asked the question.
Thanks for the nice comments. You can press the Notify button to be notified of responses to threads. Since the time you originally asked the question until now, I'll mention that 7H 2.0 now handles /QUIT properly where it will stay open until the game is closed and THEN quits 7H. It also supports a new switch, /MINI that will minimize the program to the taskbar.

Yeah, UAC does get in the way to truly make it 1 click, I didn't think about that, I'm sure there's a workaround out there somewhere.

Using hex to translate strings is a bit of a pain, btw using touphscript e renaming exe does the trick, as you explain. thanks for help ;)

How so? Take your base EXE, hextcompare it to your TouphScript modified EXE, and all the hext is dumped out for you and you just update the offset. Takes 10 seconds.

Troubleshooting / Re: Failed to Automount
« on: 2020-04-25 01:40:31 »
He has windows 10.

Probably not.

The auto-mount feature only works on Windows 8 and above. TBH there's a lot of folks out there that have no idea what Windows is, let alone what version they're running. If you've 100% seen with your own eyes he is running Windows 10, then something is probably broken with PowerShell, as that is what 7th Heaven is executing in the background to mount the disc.

See this page for how to do it manually with PowerShell: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/storage/mount-diskimage?view=win10-ps. Altering the example a little bit for his ISO path, he would type:

Mount-DiskImage -ImagePath "C:\7th Heaven\Resources\FF7DISC1.ISO"

Note any errors that may occur then research that problem to find a possible solution. Of course, that's not the only way this can be done. If truly on Windows 8 or above, you should just be able to double-click on the ISO (found in folder shown above) to mount it manually. If that still isn't working, something is hosed with his ISO support in Windows. Your last resort options are to rename a disk or USB stick to "FF7DISC1" or to download a 3rd party tool (there's a couple free ones out there) that you can use to mount the ISO file instead.
