Completely Unrelated / PS3 hacker gives up
« on: 2010-07-14 14:53:09 »
Geohot says that he has given up on hacking the PS3, and his blog is now invite only.

I suspect that this is actually nothing to do with him giving up and everything to do with Sony threatening him or paying him off.

Something I've noticed when lurking around emulator forums* and looking at system requirements is that a lot of people in the emulator community will recommend clock speeds, ask what the clock speed of people's processors are and give only their clock speed when asked a question, completely omitting the processor's architecture. Examples would be things such as "you'll need a 3.0GHz processor to run this" or "'how kind of processor are you using' '2.5GHz'". However, anyone who knows anything about processors knows that measuring the power of, say, an Athlon II and an i7 by looking only at their clock speeds is like measuring the speed of two runners by looking only at the number of strides they can take in a certain amount of time, completely ignoring the fact that one may take much longer strides than the other. I once read someone say that only idiots would buy a certain model of the i7 instead of a cheaper C2D with a slightly higher clock speed because he claimed the i7 was less powerful.

I was immediately inclined to call such people idiots, but the near ubiquity of this way of thinking and the fact that the only thing I know about console emulation is that it's a little odd makes me wonder, do emulators work in a very special way that makes the clock speed more important than the architecture, or are there just a lot of very "special" people out there imparting their wisdom? ;D

*the pcsx2 forums are a notable exception to this

I found this article interesting, although I would have taken MLK off the list and put Joan of Arc on it.

And lol at the stupid responses; one presumes that they are closet racists who think that accusing others of racism will help them deal with their own guilt (a la closet homosexuals).

Best Buy came across the Atlantic a few months ago, and (since I haven't bothered going to any of their shops), I wondered whether they really are as bad as some people in the US claim. The basic impression I've got from people on the intertubes is that they are the worst retailers in history, overcharge (mind you, if they do that they'll fit right in over here...), bullshit customers into buying all sorts of things they don't need, pay their (underqualified) employees peanuts and treat them like monkeys, engage in active deception, charge $200 to wipe hard drives and steal your nudez and post them on /b/.

Is this accurate? I never buy from brick-and-mortar computer shops so it's of no relevance to me; I just find all the stories from former Geek Squad employees and whatnot to be rather amusing and am curious to know how representative they are of the whole company. ;D

Another of YouTube's beloved gimmicks. Why can't they keep things like this and get rid of the new video page? Sigh...

...and Japanese, finally. At the moment, I know absolutely nothing of the former and a little of the latter.

Does anyone have any advice/funny anecdotes about learning C++? (i.e. what books/online guides to read, what tools to use, etc)

The JRPG is Dead: 5 Reasons Why (found on Sancom)

Well, except for the last point. It's nice to have comic relief.

And lol at all the stupid responses. It's obvious that half of them didn't even read the article and only left messages because they read a forum post or something telling them that someone was criticising JRPGs. Most of the angry responses seem to come from people under the impression that the blogger hates JRPGs, which is obviously wrong to anyone who even bothered to read the first few sentences. ;D

Completely Unrelated / Cat Mario, and other evil games
« on: 2010-06-13 22:01:56 »
So, how many people here enjoy this kind of thing?

I've occasionally had some fun playing Cat Mario/ Syobon Action (I'm sure most people here will have come across it at some point). It's not actually very hard to beat; in fact, it's much easier to finish than normal Mario on account of the small number of levels and the infinite lives. It's also very satisfying, since you can see how much progress you are making.

I've also dabbled with Unfair Platformer, but I didn't really enjoy it as much (Western sh*t with annoying "Spring Yard Zone" music ;D)

Will England finally win? Will we get knocked out in the quarter finals in a penalty shoot-out? Will we lose humiliatingly to the US? How many fans will get raped/murdered? Will there be lulz? By the 12th of July, we'll know the answer!

Today's matches are South Africa vs Mexico and Uruguay vs France. I'm tending towards saying that Mexico and France will win, but SA have home advantage and a lot of expectation, so... the first match should be an exciting one (lol just kidding, early games are nearly always 0-0 draws :D)

Completely Unrelated / Your political views!

http://www.politicalcompass.org/test

I wonder how the qhimmsters will come out on this test, should any of them take it. ;D

Pic related; it's where I came. I'm a classical liberal, so no major politicians support my views :'(

No, srsly. Believing that the government should stop telling people what to do and should keep out of everyone's pockets seems, or rather, believing in "the ideal of limited government and liberty of individuals including freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and free markets" seems to be a more marginal position in global politics nowadays than hardcore communism. Apparently, everyone in the world is either a socialist or a conservative and I'm some kind of freak. The only people who seem to share my views are those paranoid Americans with thousands of guns who think that there's going to be a revolution some time soon, and I'm sure that they're just conservatives who got turned off by the religious right.

Anyway, enough ranting. I'll wait and see if anyone else takes the test.

BTW, I kind of get the idea that there's a little bit of a left-wing bias from some of the questions; asking people whether they think it's sad that water is a consumer product or whether businesses should be penalised for misleading the public seems to be trying to force the test taker to go with the more economically left-wing option.

Completely Unrelated / We have a new Prime Minister!
« on: 2010-05-11 21:20:43 »
I thought I'd do a quick hit-and-run on you guys ;D

Anyway, here's Britain's new PM, complete with halo:

Oh, and I voted for him ;) (kinda; I voted tactically for the lib dems in a seat that was a contest between them and Labour).

I actually think this election has gone well; Labour is gone, and the Lib Dems might be able to prevent the Tories doing anything too evil (unless Clegg turns about to be a gigantic pussy). We couldn't really have hoped for anything better.

Anyway, I have this final message to Labour: ;D

Opposition to child porn can be used and exploited to convince people that censoring the internet is a good idea, from which point it will be easy to clamp down on other kinds of website that one doesn't like, according, to members of the music industry:

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/04/29/music-industry-we-love-child-porn/

What this person doesn't understand, however, is that governments learnt this trick a long time ago and have been using the public's fear of their children being raped in order to pass questionable laws for quite some time.

I'll get back to work now... :(

Well, it's just over six weeks until finals (shiiiiiit!), so I won't be able to come here very often, if at all, until they're over. Nope, I'll be working harder than I have have before in my life (mind you, that isn't saying much). :P

Anyway, if you see me here over the next two months, tell me to f*** off and do some work ;D

Well, ja ne, mina-san!

« on: 2010-04-07 17:49:00 »
It's more likely than you think! :D

Well, not actually, since I'm not going to install it just yet. ;D If it can allow OtherOS on the slim, then maybe. If it can make PS2 emulation possible (I doubt it), then definitely.

When fanboys argue over which game's hero/villain would win in a fight in debates over which is the best character or, worse still, which is the best game.

Arguing over who would win in a fight between characters from different games isn't inherently stupid (although the arguments are often made in a profoundly retarded way, not taking into account that there are different rules in different fictional universes and the source of one character's power might not exist in the universe of a different game). However, that is not what angers me. What angers me is "would win in a fight" being taken to mean "better hero/villain". I see this a lot in FF6 vs FF7 debates, but it happens with other games too.

Do these people have any idea how stupid this is? Judging a hero villain by his strength or the destruction he causes? That's what a five-year-old would do. Anyone can think of a character who is ridiculously powerful; it doesn't take much creativity or imagination to do that. What is more important is how the story is told and how the hero or villain is characterised. The game's creators' ability to tell stories and create drama is what makes a character good.

To give an example, according to the logic that fanboys use in these arguments, The Matrix is better than the Iliad. After all, Neo is stronger than Achilles and Agent Smith is stronger than Hector, therefore Neo is a better hero than Achilles and Agent Smith is a better villain than Hector. Fuck all this faggot shit about Homer being better at creating characters and telling a better story, what matters is who would win in a fight! :D

It's not just the Iliad that is inferior either; Hamlet is even worse. Think about how easily Neo could kill Prince Hamlet and how easily Agent Smith could kill King Claudius. It's obvious who's the better dramatist; Shakespeare's characters are crap compared to those of the great Wachowski brothers. They can't even destroy the planet Earth! ;D

BTW, I've been doing some research on who is the strongest character in any video game ever made, and have come to a conclusion about what is the best game evar!

Scroll down to see ;D

That's right kids! Think about all of the powers that Superman has. It's clear that this makes him the best character ever and makes Superman 64 the best game ever! ;)

Completely Unrelated / YouTube's new design
« on: 2010-04-01 03:20:03 »
Words can not express how awful this is. Every single change they've made is retarded. Is it uglier and harder to use. Whoever designed this needs to be fired.

Out of a cannon.

A cannon that is located on the roof of the Burj Khalifa

I really hope they listen to the community reaction with this one and don't ignore it like they did with the new channels. Apart from making greasemonkey scripts unusable, this design makes YouTube a much less pleasant experience.
