Custom graphics driver for FF7/FF8 [v.1-.7.6]
I'm trying to use this driver with ff8 but the backgrounds and text are sooo ugly... 3d models are fine and I get no black boxes, I can see debug info and fps if set, so game is using aali driver, but it just shows so many pixelized stuff...
Using postprocessing (bloom2) improves this a bit, but creates huge white shadows all around. Median PP is better, but still far from perfect.
What settings do you use to run ff8 decently?
I wonder if forcing AA through nvidia cp (vista x64) is working or not...
I don't use the driver for FF8, but I'm curious, what do you mean by "pixelized"? Does it look worse than this?
Can you provide a link to a screenshot?

That image is 640x480. My screen is a 24'' with 1920x1080, so it MAY be about the same but way magnified... I'll take a screen latter.
ff7 looks absolutely gorgeous compared to ff8.

As to say first and first, amazing driver Aali.

But secondly...I have a problem!

For the FFVII problem, if you're getting the "Oops, an error has occurred" dialog, then what might fix your problem would be to download Hojo Enemy Editor, open \data\battle\scene.bin with it, then click File...Update Kernel File.

Alrighty, ill be editing the post in 5 mins with the results. Thanks for the quick reply though.

EDIT: No, it didn't fix the issue, the actual dialog is "Oops something very bad has happened", although thanks for showing me that enemy editor :) )

EDIT 2: Yea, i fixed the FF7, and the FF8 with some playing around..but for some reason FF8 now is just running..slow..it feels like im getting 5fps through the game but it consistently jumps back and forth between 5 and 30..kind of hard to explain but..yea.

@Jamers @kranmer @obesebear

Thx a lot, guys for helping me out.

I tried one more time to make things work on windows 7 and with a fresh new ff7 install plus aali's 0.7.5 driver and ff7music 1.51(with in_mad.dll since in_mp3.dll seems to have problems with 64-bt OS'es).

  Worked like a charm.

Must have been something I messed up in the middle of the process..:D

Thx again Aali for the good work.

I have a problem with the latest relase (0.7.5b) of this app.
As the guide says I replace all the files in the FFVII directory and when i'm going to launch the FF7Config.exe I get "FF7Config.exe has stopped working".
I have Windows 7 on and FFVII (not Ultima Edition) 1.02.
Another strange thing is that the APP.LOG is empty instead yesterday there was some data.

Hi,
Aali, in next verison can you add if FFconfig the option to chose your driver version? And in, this case, can you store your driver versions in different directory?
Thanks

Custom graphics driver for FF7/FF8 [v.1-.7.6]

I hate to be the guy who can't figure it out for himself but if someone could please help thank you very much for your time.

I'm trying to get this to work for both VII and VIII because if I remember correctly this runs the games in 32-bit color.

I've never been a big fan of OpenGL.  I don't see why you don't use DirectX but I don't know enough about OpenGL to criticize it.  But I'm sure you've got a good reason, maybe it's better for older games I don't know.

Anyway my problem is my videocard goes berserk if I use anything with OpenGL.  It's pretty outdated...Radeon x800 256mb.  I'm using the 8.9 drivers because it retains the alternate pixel center option.  But the newest drivers aren't that far off because my card is considered a "legacy" now.  I think they went up to 9.2 or something.

After about 10 minutes of playing VII I get this VPU Recover message and then I have to restart my computer because it seems everything reverts to VGA.
Is this happening to anyone else with an ATI card?  How do I fix it?

Also some questions for Aali:

Is it possible to use Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering in OpenGL.  If not why are you using it?
Secondly, I remember reading you'll be able to get VII to run in full screen without that black bar at the bottom, is that right?
Third, do you know what's causing the problem I'm experiencing?
And last, thank you for doing this man.  I very much appreciate someone that is just trying to get the two games to run the way they were supposed to in the first place.  If you don't know about it and you like FFVI then I'm making a patch that will replace the game with a much better translation.  It's mostly from the GBA script.

Your card should support OGL2 (the backend of Aali's driver) I sadly only owned the ATI cards just before your generation (Radeon 9800) and i had terrible issues with it.. only thing i could think of is try updating the drivers. Which you stated you'd not like to do.

It does support Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering. I use 32xQ and 16x respectively.
It can run at fullscreen in battles only, For now at least. The Mighty Wizard Aali will fix that soon i'm sure :P

Wish i could help you out more. but hope this was useful

Ok. so I'm having some troubles now that I got this and the last update to the driver running, Every time the battle swirl appears and every time I summon a summon that affects the texture of the battle ground I get an error report that says Error:Invalid GL value, And whatever was affected just turns white.. which makes me a sad panda....

Just as a note, I am not running multiple FFVII's, That's me copy/pasting into MS paint...
Also, the first  Pic is actually Satan Slam if you couldn't tell the other two are Alexander. So far I've seen this affect these, Phoenix, and Titan's animations.

So do you have an Nvidia card now or ATI?  Are you able to enable AA and AF in the Control Panel?

Also is Aali going to be able to make the battles full screen with the menu at the bottom of the screen?

Let me guess, you also have a message about missing NPOT textures in app.log? This happens if your card doesn't support this feature and you render in a resolution that is not a multiple of 640x480.

Hi Aali, few small issues:

Credit screen and game menu seem to be at 60 fps when 30fps is preferable.  It seems the credits at the start of game are too fast compared to PSX?  The menu is updating so fast that the movement of the cursor is too sensitive.

There's like no read me or any directions, and I haven't seen

hi aali how come I cant register your newest driver? I am running on windows 7 64 bit.

You said I need to make sure EAXUnified.exe is really installed but there is no such file in newest version

I try start game after extracting the files FF7 folder and configuring ff7 opengl file. Still It looks like its only the default resolution i used 1680x1050

@Cloud1000 and @Vincent Valentine
EAXUnified.exe is for FF8 and NOT FF7,
After extracting the files to your FF7 folder then run "FF7CONFIG.EXE" and on the Graphics page select "Custom Driver" then edit FF7config.cfg to the settings you want then save it and run the game. Check app.log to see if the driver is loading.

Correct Kranmer! In other words:
http://backup.ninjaloot.se/share/ff7_opengl-0.7.5b.zip

Installation
1. Extract the archive into your ff7 or ff8 folder
FF7:
2a. Run the modified FF7Config, pick custom driver in the list of renderers, you should get confirmation that the driver is working.
3a. Change your settings in ff7_opengl.cfg
FF8:
2b. Make sure EAX is properly installed (run EAXUnified.exe to install it if unsure)
3b. Change your settings in ff8_opengl.cfg
4. Play!

Thanks alot it worked. I have also downloaded
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8414.0

and Put in ff7 directory folder movies.
However I launch FF7 there is no video in beginning screen completly black and there is error message saying skipping frames. ect. Also I try make new game to get new opening. And screen completly black till you start the game after the train stops. Only sound.

Is there some sort of instructions ya can give me to get it to work? I got ff7 1.02 patch installed and latest Aali's driver.

Well first did the original movies work alright for you ? (before the mods)
Also is your PC powerfull enough to handle those size movies ? (try playing them in Windows Media Player or somthing like that and see if they play smoothly)
Also try posting your App.log and that will give us more info on whats going wrong.

EDIT-
Also i have just noticed that the post on the first page still seems linked to 0.7.5 though.Aali's driver 0.7.5 is outdated. 0.7.6 is the latest version here
http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8306.msg130504#msg130504
(i have been using 0.7.6 since it came out but i havent checked the first page of this thread in a long time)

I am 100 % positive my PC can handle the movies. I have the latest patch 0.7.6b. How can I post app.log? the game doesnt crash It just goes black. I have the cutscenes from http://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=8915.0

they work with his mod. but I want to be able to run my FF7 with the default exe. Not with a bat file.

I think he got it from grimmy too. So I dont understand why It doesnt work

The App.log still appears every time you run the game even if it doesnt crash,
Just run the game, get to where the problems start, Then close the game and go to your FF7 installed folder.
App.log should be there. post that here.
