^^^ you're thinking backwards...
You need to go to older cards and DirectX5.1, not newer ones.

Really, the easiest option would be to buy a PS2.

Then I say it's a video driver problem.

There was a time when all the backgrounds would be black but you could see the characters and text boxes. I don't remember what caused it exactly, but it had to do with the TNT patch and the way FF7config.exe was setup and whether the 8bit pallet was enabled or not.

In otherwords, it  had to do with the TNT patch and your video driver.

Software mode shouldn't be a problem from what I can remember.

Hey...dziugo

Do you have a webpage for all these patches? Because I rather not refer people to Qhimm's forum, if I can help it. This forum is loaded with leechers, as it is.

If you're using a SBlive card, I recommend playing the game in Basic Acceleration mode.

change it by typing dxdiag (in Run...) and selecting the Sound Tab. Then move the slider until it says Basic.

8bit pallet is more of a driver thing than a video card thing. There were a few driver version on the Nvidia side of things that got it right a few times (back in the Geforce 3 days)....but lately, it's been broken.

Also if Rivatuner hasn't been updated for the said driver, it most likely won't do anything. It won't have control over the switch. That is most likely what happened. If you say you enabled it and the test says fail.

Anyway 8bit pallet isn't a problem with FF7PC. The TNT patch is really an 8bit pallet bypass patch. The TNT patch doesn't work unless it Fails that test.

The main reason why 8bit pallet isn't a concern with FF7 is because Eidos released an 8bit bypass patch.... called the TNT patch. FF8 never got such a patch. You're at the mercy of the video drivers as far as Hardware mode is concerned.

However FF7 has video and audio codec problems. FF7 depends Window's programs and drivers to work. Seems that when these things get updated (probably automaticly without your knowledge), FF7PC pretty much breaks.

I figure this to be true, because with a fresh install of WindowsXP, my copy of FF7PC works perfectly. But after about a month of normal computer use. I noticed major audio garble, and framerate slideshow pauses during FMV's and Battles, afterwards.

About the only thing you can really do is go back to the old technology, and play the game on an old Pentium or something with a Voodoo2 card.

Beats me... maybe the game just doesn't work with a PC that uses Duel processors.

But if you described that in general terms.....not just related to FF7. I'd guess that a processor or video card is running too hot.

There is a way to modify your savefile to bring her back into your party....but as I recall it causes the game to crash in a few places..... And she does have her own dialog, such as after the snowboard minigame.

I don't know/remember how to do it, however..... never much cared for such things. But if you google around, I'm sure you'll stumble onto the mod.

As for your Masamune sword question; your answer lies in the Hot Coffee mod of San Andreas...or the Tissues, miniture soldiers or the mirrors of the ancient city in FF7. Or...Save the Queen of FF9.

Zidane was a test tube baby, created to help the take over of Giea(sp) for Terra. Think of it as an invasion between dimensions. But Zidane's brother through him out of the ship and took his place. At least, I think that's the way it went. Kinda your DBZ storyline.

Cloud is not really a clone of Sephiroth. He was part of an experiement where they inject Jenova cells into the body and then powered up with Lifestream energy for added strength, I guess. The game never really tells us the Cloning process other then what Sephritoh says about it, or if it is even related to our definition of cloning. It's also likely to be a misinterpretation or mistranslation. Regardless, the game covers itself up from another angle. Jenova is able to read minds as well as shapeshift. You can say that everyone that got injected with Jenova cells, *is* Jenova. Those with strong will are able to resist her callings. When Cloud met Tifa in Midgar, he didn't know who he was. If you recall there is a Flash and Cloud starts talking to Tifa. Cloud got memories of himself from Tifa... The catch is that Jenova didn't know that the little boy in Tifa's memories, was actually the person she was controlling. That's when we start viewing the story... The meeting of Tifa was told in a flashback within the game. So...you're Cloud's conscience.

As for Time Compression in FF8. They never really get into it. But Ultimecia needed to go further back in time to activate Time Compression. The machine based on Ellone, could only go so far... Maybe it could only go to where Ellone was? Anyway she needed to go further back. Also, the machine apparently can home in on women with the sorceress' powers, those that have the power of Hyne(sp). Ultmecia wanted to get control of Ellone, and have her leap frog her further back in time, where then she could achieve Time Compression. Why did she want Time Compression? So to control all the power of the Hyne., I guess. With Time Compression the power Hyne would me multiplied  or something. All his power that is Spread thru the ages would all be focused into one point. Time would not be relevant. (Or something like that) Ultimecia wanted the power of a God. FF8 never tells us what is needed for Time Compression, but apparently Ellone's trick was all that was needed for it to happen.

I suggest just using the TNT patch and see what happens.

Win2000 is the hardest OS to work with this game. And adding to the idea that your new to Windows....I'd say it's pretty hopeless.

With WinXP, I may be able to walk you thru.... as for Win2000.... that link is about the only help you're probably going to get and probably the best help.

And it looks like a pretty good, link...
May have to borrow that.

What other games?

Parasite Eve series.
Fatal Frame series.
Devil May Cry.
Metal Gear Solid series
Vagrant Story (I think)
Shadow Hearts series
Xenosaga Ep2
SMT: Nocturne
SMT: Digital Devil Saga
Star Ocean 3 (In a very small sense, unlockables thru battle trophies)

I'm sure I missed more than a few.

First of all it probably wouldn't fix if it was enable. For a long time the Det drivers 8bit pallet was enabled, and for a long time FF7's backgrounds had a layering problem, because of it. The 8bit pallet hasn't been FF7 compatible for a while, now.

Second of all, if you're using Rivatuner to turn it on. It's highly likely that Rivatuner isn't updated for the latest Drivers. Which means the toggle is broken.

Does Rivatuner's Database match the driver version number? That's one way to tell if it's been updated.

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / Xeno-gears
« on: 2005-11-11 18:44:15 »
...You're kinda wrong.....

Xenogears and Xenosaga are not from the same storyline. They were never meant to be part of the same story. Not that it matters, now. But Xenosaga was never intended to be a prequel of Xenogears.

You can think of it as a Tenchi Muyo anime, I guess. But even less so, being that most if not all of the characters are different. Even if Nephilim looks like Elie as a little girl. And the boy with the blocks looked like Fei.

And by the looks of it.... unless he's introduced in Ep3... looks like that boy might be a dropped plot.

I kinda have the same thing going on.... I know what will fix it, but I don't know what causes it. Have had the problem before, and what fixed it was a reformat/reinstall of Windows.

But my problem wasn't/isn't so much the audio moving too fast. It's more like the audio is lagging behind and waiting, and then when the movie catches up, it laggs again.... causing a stuttering movie effect. Also sound played during FMV's is distorted...making my speaker pop. Ingame battles, are pretty much doing the same thing, minus the speaker pop. So, it's not exactly what your system is doing.

With Win98, accelerated audio was usually fixed by putting DirectSound Acceleration into Basic mode. But I kinda doubt that solution will work with WinXP

Usually playing thru in quarterscreen mode, will work.

That copy and paste thing doesn't apply, anymore. That was a work around for those drivers.... not for these newer one. It was basicly for the drivers that had the 8bit pallet enabled. That copy and paste thing solved the blocking/layering problem, that it's apparently creates on these newer drivers.

I don't have any exiting problems....  but I just noticed I have some gaming problems with that game. And I don't have a clue whats causing it. It's playable...but annoying. The movies play choppy and the gameplay itself seems choppy. The Audio sounds distorted, as well.  I'm not going to bother with it... I'll probably do more damage, than cure it. Probably an audio codec conflict or video. I'm sure a fresh install of windows would solve it.... But, I'm not about to do that....again.
