7th Heaven / Problems with controls after/during naming screen and solution

I'm playing on my laptop and when I start a new game, name my characters (here I had some problems with exiting the naming screen but pressing ESC and then ENTER works), save and quit and then start the game again the controls are messed up and I had a problem getting past the "New Game / Continue?"-screen. In a reply to a previous post I read that holding down FN would make the keyboard controls work on secondary meaning, the new controls became:

FN+ENTER = OK
FN+2 = DOWN
FN+3 = PAGE DOWN
FN+8 = UP
FN+9 = PAGE UP
FN+´ = MENU
FN+0 = BACK
FN+6 = RIGHT
FN+4 = LEFT

Using the new controls I managed to access my save files and change the controls back to normal. I mainly wanted to share this if someone encounters a similar problem, but I also wanted to ask if there is a way to prevent the problem occuring in the first place?

I play on the steam version of the game, and when running the FF7 game converter I install the Laptop keyboard patch.
