Can you try, either with a cheat device (RAW code 1031958A 00000001, let me know if you need it converted - for PCSX2 patches, it's adress 0031958A, value 00000001, enabled yes, place to patch 1, type short, leave all others as default) or Dark Bahamut (room number 1), to get into the debug menu, and see if you can complete the following sequence once in it: (you don't have to worry about using Jokers to turn the debug code off, as it only has an effect when loading a game)

1) nakazawa
2) to battle menu
3) Battle Settings
4) Invincible
5) "Input Monster Command", set it to "ON"

If you can do this, can you get me save _states_ (through PCSX2) firstly with the option turned off, and second with it turned on?
If you can't do that, could you at least confirm whether it can be done in the French version?

As for your save file, I got the email, but I've been pretty busy today but may have time to look at it tomorrow. However, could you send me more info on it? (Firstly, exactly which values don't work? And secondly, what they /should/ be when loading your file?)

Err... Why did your topic get closed, back on GFaqs ?
Anyways, I noticed a problem with DB when trying to edit a saved file from the PAL French FFX : first, it doesn't recognize its saved file. I always have to select "all files" as file type in order to select my BESCES-50491FF090600.

Also, the general menu as well as the Items and Aeons ones work fine, but the Characters and Monster Arena tabs don't seem to work. The reason being the fact that the values there are the game's initial values - not the saved file's values. For example, my Tidus has 820 HP and 27 Strength, but in your utility he still has 520 HP and 15 Strength. And about the captured monsters : I captured all enemies in Besaid and Kilika (x10), but Dark Bahamut still says I didn't capture any.

EDIT:

Never mind about my first question, I just saw the new topic ;)

Could you send me some save files from your version? Getting them in the list will be easy enough, fixing up the offsets may be a bit trickier.

Also - can you contact me on MSN or email? There's something else I'm trying to do, and I need assistance from someone with a non-English PAL version of FFX. I know for sure the Spanish version will work, but others are worth a try too.

Yes, but not directly.

You would need to extract it from the PCSX2 memory card file using a program called "MyMC", then from the extracted file (which would be identical to one transferred from a memory card via a cheat device) extract again with PS2 Save Builder.

The only case in which you don't need to do any extracting is if you transfer the raw save from a memory card using uLaunchELF.

http://www.gyakutenwiki.net/DarkBahamut.zip

Requires you to extract the save file with PS2 Save Builder first, I might look at directly editing cheat device files at a later stage but it's not high on my to do list.

So far, it can edit:
-Character stats, overdrive, kill count, sphere level, total sphere level
-Aeon stats, overdrive, kill count, (Yojimbo only) compatibility
-Monster Arena captures and unlocked creations
-Items (not yet equipment though, but that's on my to do list and probably the next thing I'll do)
-Gil, play time, and current location
-New: You can set which Dark Aeons (and Penance) have or haven't been defeated. Useful if you Zanmato'd one that was in your way before you were strong enough to beat it, and now want to come back and fight it properly.

Also, if you have a save file with an incorrect checksum, you can load it in DB then save it (without modifying anything) and it *should* work again.

I can confirm from many reports that it works fine with the PAL English version, it *should* also work with all other versions except the original Japanese (International Japanese should be fine).

55
Okay, if you haven't already cracked much, don't worry about it (unless you're wanting to do it anyway), as I've found a way to bypass the checksum test altogether without the use of a cheat device.

56
You forgot to state which game you're talking about here... I would assume either FF7 or FF8, since FF7 is most commonly talked about here and I've heard of stuff like this happening with FF8...

WARNING: Spoilers for Final Fantasies 7, 8, 9 and X ahead

Random encounters:

3) Varuna (Final Fantasy X) - I don't really know why. He's just fun to fight.
2) T-Rexaur (Final Fantasy VIII) - A super powerful monster who can be weakened with strategy, rather than just requiring super defence. My type of customer.
1) Great Malboro (Final Fantasy X) - A battle where power means almost nothing and strategy is everything. What more could I ask for?

Storyline bosses:

3) Seymour Omnis (Final Fantasy X) - The mortiphasms are really fun to play with, although the battle could've been pulled off better. Try beating him without ever attacking him, by using Reflect and playing with the mortiphasms. It can be done.
2) Yunalesca (Final Fantasy X) - Another one where strategy far prevails over brute power.
1) Bizzaro Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII) - The switching parties, multiple targets with different functionalities and needing to figure out exactly how to deal with them. A great battle.

Optional bosses:

3) Hades (Final Fantasy IX) - I consider this guy to be the real "ultimate" boss of FF9, as Ozma is purely a matter of luck. A good fight, which can still be set in stone with good strategy.
2) Omega Weapon (Final Fantasy VIII) - No invincibility, no The End... try beating him this way. Another fun and strategy-filled battle.
1) Dark Bahamut (Final Fantasy X) - Occasional counterattacks rather than abusing them, decent attacks rather than insane ones that require either hundreds of turns to prepare or lots of luck to survive, and a decent but not overkill amount of HP. This is not only my favourite optional boss, but my favourite enemy full stop from any Final Fantasy I've played so far (which are 6 to X-2).

Finally, for No Sphere Grid + No Summon + No Doom Optional Bosses on Final Fantasy X:

3) Catastrophe - Requires a good amount of switching and thinking to work out and near the start, but only gets 3rd as towards the end it just gets extremely tedious.
2) Jumbo Flan - Even more strategic, and actually requires on-the-spot strategy all the way through unlike Catastrophe who's just a matter of getting the setup right.
1) Omega Weapon (PAL/Int) - You say he's pathetic? Try fighting him this way. He's not unreasonable (you need a little bit of luck but if done right you can usually win) or overly long (the battle lasts 15 to 25 minutes), but still requires a good amount of planned and on-the-spot strategy, effective character switching (including use of placeholder characters) and planning ahead. Probably my favourite battle so far in this challenge.

58
Um... you shouldn't need to break the structure at all. You can use homebrew software to transfer the raw save files, or PS2 Save Builder to extract them from the cheat device save file of your choice. For PCSX2 memory card files, there's a program called MyMC that can insert and extract them.

Can someone please explain, in basic terms, how a CRC16 calculation works, or point out what I'm doing wrong?

I need to know how to do it with any given polynomial and "initial value" (Hex Workshop has a setting for this and I don't understand how it even factors into a calculation)...

I understand some technical related stuff (XOR, bits, bytes, endianness), but I can't seem to get a calculation to work correctly.

Using 0x8005 (yes, I know technically this means 0x18005, I haven't forgotten this) as a polynomial on the string "123456789" (without quotes, and as the characters, not the number), working by hand I get DFD8 and by my program I get 580C, when it should be (both from a website I found and Hex Workshop's calculation) BB3D. Obviously I'm doing something wrong along the line... here's how I'm doing it:

By hand:
1) Convert the entire string to binary (I am 100% sure I'm doing this correctly), I've tried both without and with adding two empty bytes to the end (without them, I got DAA6)
2) Line the polynomial (also converted in binary, and remembering to add the extra x^16 bit) up with the first 1 in the string
3) XOR it with the bits above it in the string (it's possible I made a mistake here but I'm fairly sure I didn't)
4) The bits that were not lined with the polynomial, just carry them down (eg: if string was 1110001101, and polynomial only covered first four bits, would carry the 001101 down and append it to the result)
5) Repeat until the string is shorter than the polynomial

By program (I'm using a form of BASIC, so if there's terms here with different meanings in different languages, assume the BASIC meaning)
1) Convert the string and polynomial to binary, in arrays with one array element per byte (eg: if the first character was 3C in hex, which is 00111100 in binary, the first 8 elements of the array would be 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 0, 0) - yes, I did treat the polynomial as a number and not a string, and once again, I remembered to add the x^16 bit, I also added the two empty bytes to the end of the string, I know this part is done right
2) Look through the string's array for the first 1, then from this point, XOR each element with the polynomial's value in the same position
3) Repeat step 2 until the 17th to last element is 0
4) Convert back to decimal/hex (I know this is done right)

Any advice would be great, thanks.

I think it's from 2 bytes after the first checksum, until the very last byte before the second one...

I did notice, the entire save is copied into active memory in a save state, but there are some differences and the checksum is replaced with A747, not sure if this is helpful in any way...

62
And yes, I've tried searching the site for that info, both on FFX and older FFs. The only thing I've found anywhere for older FFs is to do with FF8 and it didn't help much...

(EDIT: Sorry about the multiple posts - I'm used to GameFAQs which doesn't have an edit button and therefore multiple posting is considered acceptable... and this board doesn't have a delete button for users so I can't remove the extra posts either...)

63
About that 5D6256 hex string... it's a character's name. >_> (Not their default one)

I've worked out where the names are stored in the save now, and the character encoding used, although that's not much help without the checksum/CRC being broken.

The only other thing I've found is that the data before the first checksum is NOT accounted for in it. You can change this as much as you like and the save may have weird results in the menu, but it will still load perfectly, no corruption message.

Also: I now have a cheat device I can use to bypass it, but that's not much help either without a bypass code, and plus I'd still rather know how to calculate it properly.

Troubleshooting / Re: FF X International
« on: 2009-03-31 14:15:43 »
I don't think it'd be that much trouble. The graphics for the dark aeons do exist, even in the US version, so a texture swap code could do the trick. How exactly to hack one, though, is beyond me.

(If you're wondering why they're in there - SPOILERS ALERT - the dark aeons look the same as the posessed aeons you fight at the end of the game, which are in all versions.)

65
Any luck?

Can anyone tell me how other FF save games calculate theirs? It might be something similar so worth a try.

I've tried CRC16 and CITT but neither work, I'm thinking this may be a CRC with a custom polynomial or initial value?

66
I used it at one point and actually had no trouble running mods on it (HP/damage limit breaks and hardcore mod). I did however pick up an official copy since, to ensure more compatibility for other mods I may want at some point.

67
Here's a few saves you can try messing with:

http://www.randomblackguy.net/ffxsaves.rar

They're all in raw format, copied directly from the memory card rather than using any manager like SharkPort.

I've also noticed the hex string 5D6256 near the start and end of each save, not sure if it means anything. :/

68
Anyone?

I get that bug too. :/

I never got it on this PC until I reinstalled windows a while ago, anyone know the fix?

Anyway - Rufus is damn easy without items. Cast Bio on him, throw Cross Slash when you get it, and just heal. Also - his attack is not long range despite using a gun, so BACK ROW.

Btw, I find the names "Biara" and "Biaga" kinda weird... "Biora" and "Bioga" would've been better. :/

70
I've found the checksum/CRC is stored at 1A and again at the 3rd and 4th bytes from the end of the file, but I can't work out how it's calculated... whether it's just finding the right range, or an actual weird calculation, I dunno. :/

On one file, the 1s complement CRC-16 for the range starting from 4 bytes after the first checksum, with the final byte being the one two before the second checksum, was correct except for being backwards, but on the others, it's nowhere near.
Anyone got any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

71
I'm guessing I'm meant to take that as a no?

I started smoking 'cus it is cool.

Ugh. People who smoke "cause it's cool" are lame. >_>
If you smoke because you want to, fair enough (I myself do), but doing it to look "cool"? Meh. -_-"

Aps and Hell House were pathetic. o_O

The only difference I noticed with Aps was he used the reverse tsunami much more often...

Hell House was actually /easier/ than I remember him being before... the counterattack is new though, right?

Up to Locke, Venus and... what was the other one? now. They're giving me hell, 7 attempts so far and still haven't been able to beat them. Got the third one dead once then Venus revived him, but that's it.

Reno, on the other hand, was kinda a pain... especially with the 200 HP Pyramids...

With Reno I found that not trying to destroy the pyramids was the best strategy.  He won't pyramid all three of the party(at least for me) so just fight him with the remaining party member.  He only has 1000 hp so its not too bad.

He sure did for me. Even if he didn't, he can still Paralyze the remaining member.
