The new "Stretch 4:3 Aspect Ratio" option should do what you were asking for Kinseek. It won't remove the black bars put there by FF8 itself as to keep the entirety of the picture from the original but it will stretch the image in both directions to fit the current resolution and hence mess up the proportions (like on tv).
Excellent, worked perfectly as well. I would have tested it on Vista 64 if I could, but its not been working and I don`t think I`ll mess with that until SP1.

So there is no way to stretch it horizontally just a tad more to remove the black bars on the top and bottom? That would improve the aspect ratio somewhat as well.

2
Great, 1.3 worked with my HDTV resolution. 16xs & 16AF worked as well. Haven`t tried it on Vista 64-bit yet (as the bloody thing stopped working...).

Just one request though; right now I have black bars on the side, which seems awfully claustrophobic to me :). Could you perhaps make it so that we have the option to stretch it or not?

3
Do you mean the process really crash or just terminate itself? The latter it's the result of the FF8 excecutable failing to change the display mode to the requested one and hence not being able to continue.

There's a weird issue with it not being able to change the display mode even when it's supported by the system. I can't run the game at 2560x1600 which is the native resolution of my display and I've heard others that can't run it at 1280x960 while 1920x1440 works just fine. At first I was quite puzzled about this but I then discovered that this is the case with any Direct3D 6.1 SDK example i try to run aswell. Hence it's probable to be some kind of backwards-compability issue with DirectX itself.

1280x768 will be added in version 1.3.
It just terminated itself. It certainly defies all logic that Vista is the one that would be more compatible in that regards (if what you say is correct). Maybe 1280x768 willl work, since that is what rez my screen is set at afterall, so I`ll wait for the next version.

I also tried Alchemy (before you mentioned actually), and it did nicely add the option for EAX on Vista, but I can only select the microsoft synthesizer (or general midi or whatever vista calls it), whereas on XP I can select SB X-fi audio. Is there a big quality difference between these? You mentioned a lesser audio quality in vista, is that what you meant?

4
Err, what config? It pretty much does not work for me on vista either, since you have big glaring black boxes (that this patch fixes if you run on XP).

If it matters I have a Geforce 8800 GTS, using Windows Vista 64-bit. I just installed the game completely ordinarily.

5
Nice christmas present!

I just have one snag though, the launcher crashes at once when I try any resolution above 1024x768 on XP, while it worked on Vista (though with the other bugs mentioned of course). Got a clue as to why?

And could it be possible to add 1280x768 (common HDTV rez) as a custom resolution?

Troubleshooting / Best graphics card for FF7 and FF8?
« on: 2007-11-04 12:39:19 »
So all cards from Geforce series 6 and up buggers up FF8, forcing you to use software mode (yuck), which kinda sucks as the new machine I`ve ordered uses a geforce 8800 :). But lets say if I was to buy a graphics card solely for FF7 & FF8, what would be a good buy? Do all ATI cards still render FF8 nice?

Can anyone make suggestions based on these factos:
- Renders both FF7 and FF8 in hardware, without artifacts of any kind
- Does it fast
- Support AA and AF in said games. Doesn`t ATI have a special kind of AA mode that works very well?
- Preferably PCI, not AGP (don`t have that), nor PCI-E (already taken by another card)
- Supports DVI out. I use a HDTV, and have no other monitor so that is essential.
- The cheaper the price the happier the face

I don`t reckon that you could add 1280x720 (which is a multiple of 320x240)? My shiny new 32" HDTV is somewhat picky about the resoutions it will accept, and 1280x720 is the standard that HDTVs use, meaning there might be enough demand to warrant it.

Got this thing up and running; however I noticed that all of my mp3s have crossfading on them (basically as the song starts to end the volume is gradually turned down). This of course creates some odd moments where the music is gradually being turned lower, and then suddenly jumps up again. I don`t suppose there is any way to normalize the audio at the end so it remains equal with the rest?

I`m also missing those mp3s mentioned. Do you think you could put them up somewhere?

Can someone give me instructions on how to install the SD models? The README only said "Install the same way as NPCs" and I don't know how to do that either.

-Thanks

For one; just having a downloaded copy doesn`t magically create the problem he encontered.

Secondly; I myself have a perfectly legit and paid for version of FF7, and since I get the error it can`t be related to any "ultima-edition" or anything.

I ended up asking someone else that had patched their char.lgp to send it to me, and then it worked perfectly. I can only reason that either lgptools or the Reunion installer does something funny. I did follow the proper instructions several times, and I am 100% sure I followed the instructions the way they were meant to be followed.

Archive / Will PC mods work on PSX..?
« on: 2005-09-22 22:25:59 »
Actually, there is one that might work. The difficulty-mods edits scene.bin, of which both the PSX and the PC version has (same size too). So with a little know-how, you should be easily able to replace the scene.bin on the PSX-discs (and either burn it anew, or play on an emulator)

I presume you are talking about using the FF7PSF from the Soundfont project? (I`m using that anyhow). Looping of MP3s is broken in FF7Music.

The readme that accompanied the file explains this. But sure:
Open FF7music. Go to the setup tab. Make sure you`ve selected an input plugin (inf_psf.dll?). Go to configure for the input plugin. Check the "force all songs to play indefinetely". Should work

one thing im not sure on is should i increase the health of standard monsters.

I think you should. One thing that makes the game easy is that many of the enemies, both in the beginning and later on even, can go down in even just one physical hit. So increasing the damage they do means little if you are capable of taking them out on your first or second move (slash-all, much of the materia, limits etc.). If the fights are overall to become harder, they must also be longer so that the enemy actually gets to utilize its damaging attacks against the player who has a wide arsenal of spells and abilities to easily take them out.

Though if you do; I would look into increasing exp and ap values so that you don`t spend forever grinding enemies.

14
Have you enabled windows98 compatability mode (assuming you use XP?) That tends to fix some problems.

I don`t think it`s a problem with Reunions patch (unless you get an error about "fail to load" or something related to char.lgp)

And I`m confused of the way you word yourself.

Basically you`ve got the PSX version of FF7 and playing it on an emulator? Well; most if not all patches for FF7 are for the pc-version. I think you can use the higher-difficulty scene.bin files with some effort, but that`s about it.

Just tested it; and it seemingly works perfectly. I have the high-res patch, reunions patch and the music patch installed and this one didn`t mess with those. Thumbs UP!

Now if only I could get sparkles in hardware mode in the bike game...

changes will take place from once tifa joins your party as that is when a inn first becomes available along with an area to level up. First boss will also be changed.

Why not make the first enemies harder also? It worked very well in elentors patch.

standard creatures
- gil increase (i can never seem to afford anything extra in shops)

I don`t think you should do this. I tend to always be able to get * just* the things I need with normal playing, so if you really want the extra stuff you kill some more enemies.

Quote from: smithie

- all creatures may be given at least one type of elemental defense

*All*? Couldn`t you rather give those that look like they should have some elemental defense?

Quote from: smithie

also im thinking about significantly increasing each creatures unique feature.. so if a creature is meant to be fast he will become extreamly fast.

Then comes the problem if the creature is "meant" to be anything. But yeah, it could be cool with some "specialization".

I feel that the damage of enemies should only be doubled, if at all, outside of Midgar, or, at the very least, at the start of the Shinra Tower.  Any earlier Aerith would get killed in one hit from most enemies, haha.

You kidding? Even tripling the damage would still make Aeris shrug off most attacks.

Just doubling the damage a creature that normaly does 10dmg to a char with perhaps 300HP does barely squat to make it difficult. If the patch is supposed to be "hardcore" it should really be hard from the start and in every facet. Not just "a little harder, but still pretty darn easy".

Well, hard from the start.

Just don`t go overboard with HP and Defense for the enemies (cept bosses), the point should be to make the fight harder, not just longer. The key might be getting the attack-values of the enemies just right. And do heavily increase most of the enemies` drainage attacks (those that drain say HP, and give it to themselves). Nothing could be more annoying (in the good sense) of having a foe drain you for 80HP in the beginning of the game and restoring it to himself.

I think higher difficulty might also deem an increase in exp, and perhaps AP, as you are likely to spend longer times levelling (since you`ll often require that). But perhaps making the player spend some time levelling (as in the good ol` days) isn`t so bad either.

It doesn`t work that way.

hehe.. actually it does work that way if you have vsync enabled. Thats the whole point of it, to eliminate image tearing by sycronising the fps with refresh rate...

Innacurate statement. A game with vsybc enabled won`t run at 60fps (at a 60hz monitor) all the time. It simply won`t run at higher then 60fps (that could create tearing in the screen since the monitor isn`t allowed to render each frame fully)

Ok, I think I got it working now. Ignore the multi-patch. Here is the guide:

1. Make sure that your FF7.exe is the 1.02 version and untinkered with.
2. Install the high-res patch (latest 0.99).
3. Get the FF7Music with FF7 PSF. Follow the readme included to the detail.

This should get you FF7 in high-res and with psx-quality music.

ok i give up.
I just wont have psx music, or the multipatch installed.
This is the 2nd time ive had to uninstall the game because i have nomusic now. - lol.
Thanks for the help though!

Hehe, it`s just me having many balls in the air right now. I`m trying to troubleshoot why Reunions patch isn`t working for me, and helping someone out with frame-limiting for the bike mini-game.

Once I get stuff sorted out properly and ready for my grand new playthrough, I think I should be able to perhaps help you further since I too am interested in getting all of these things to work correctly.

In the meantime; maybe someone else will pop up and figure it out for you.

After installing the patch - i hear the psx music but the screen res hasnt changed.
I then install the hi-res patch, and the music stops playing altogether - no music at all, but high res is working.

Hm, I`ll try this myself then. I`ll get back to you in a few min.

EDIT; heh, I`m unsure if I`m even getting this to work correctly in the first place, regarding the multi-patch and the PSX-music.

Maybe you could try and manually install the PSX-music patch, that is using the "original", and not the multi-patch?

How so? Remember to either mute the "SW Synth" in windows volume or select an midi-setting in FFconfig that produces no music, since if you don`t you`ll have two musics playing at the same time.

So where excactly does it go wrong in what way?
