I know it's only a video, but Midgar looks amazing. Seeing as Nomura has creative control though I guess we'll be treated to more of host club Cloud and hip hop Barret.

77
Well that's literally what it means, but IMO it's a misnomer. A cross section is a view of something, not an actual object or a location. "Inside the plate" is probably what they meant, but the map looks like a cross section hence the name.

78
I forgot to look in the book Ragna posted, I have a copy at home. I stupidly haven't used it as a character reference before because Ultimania is generally pretty exhaustive but it does say that Barett (originally Blow) derives from bullet, although it spells bullet out in English so it's not like his name is a misspell. Ultimania changes the spelling to Barret, who knows why, maybe to conform to the English localization. It also mentions the Aerith -> Earth thing, and amusingly that Yuffie means nothing, they just liked the sound.

As for Meteor, I think the only reason Aerith even needs to give a description is in case a (Japanese) player is unfamiliar with the term, she's literally defining the word "meteor". The whole line is pointless in English.

I've replaced the file list with a single regex pattern, and recompiled for 32bit

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3227870/ulgp_v1.3.2.7z

Keep in mind the pattern is regex, not a globbing pattern, so something like

  ulgp magic.lgp somedir "foo|bar"

can be used to extract "foo" and "bar" only, and

  ulgp magic.lgp somedir "x.*"

extracts all files beginning with x. The glob-like pattern "x*" would only extract files with two characters.

ハイデカー's in there but not ハイデッカー, I can't remember saying anything about grammar, but if I did I was probably wrong.

81
Most of what I've found online gives ハイデガー or ハイデッガー for Heidegger, Shogakukan Progressive has the latter. I think we've stuck with Heidegger because it makes more sense than this. Maybe they wanted Heidegger but thought it'd be more amusing to make it sound like high decker bus (hohoho, hilarious...like professor Gusto)? Maybe it's just a typo, I dunno.

Actually that's a good assumption if you haven't seen what I mentioned, though.
Anyway, what if it was intended to be "Bullet" and then after the US release they scrapped that idea?

As mentioned, we've already considered Bullet and decided that it's not very likely, given that it would be a particularly awful spelling error that would have to have been vetted multiple times by multiple people prior to the Japanese release. As I'm sure you've noticed I'm hesitant to just flat out assert that Bar(r)et(t) is 100% the name they wanted, but most of the evidence supports it.

83
and I think saying that his name has always been shown as Barrett is (probably) a lie since all japanese material refers to him as Barett from the game's instruction booklet to at least the latest material. If someone can find some scans of that on Barret's profile and translate its texts, we could find what I was talking about.

Sorry I assumed we were still talking about Bullet / Barrett. As far as Barett / Barret / Barrett  is concerned you're right, there's less consistency, the manual and the establishment file have it as Barett, and Ultimania as Barret.

On the assumption that it isn't "Bullet", we've gone with Barrett - it's how the real-world name is usually spelt, and might be a reference to the firearms company, but I'm ok with any variation on that, I don't think it's very important, especially considering it's a PC name that can be changed by the player. Something like "Bullet" however would be a change worth looking into if there were more evidence to support it.

84
You mean Barret's name has been most of the time spelt Barrett?

IIRC as far as it shows up in Japanese documentation (establishment file, ultimania etc.), yes. I suppose you could make the argument that it was consistently misspelled, but again I don't think it's very likely.

85
It's not impossible that it's Bullet, just highly unlikely as 99% of the time it's been spelt Barrett.

Quote
What do you mean? Was there actually a US preview of the game with Bullet?

I think it was in a preview in a US magazine.

86
IIRC bullet appeared in a very early preview but it's been Barrett or similar every other time.

87
At least 4chan didn't descend into 8 pages of Aerith / Aeris. I can see an argument for localizing away some of the more Engrish sounding names, we have made a handful of concessions after all (I remember the Care fiasco). Still that wouldn't include stuff like moguri or Zax of course, and I'm guessing people who don't like those changes aren't going to be happy with anything. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. There still hasn't been a single criticism about the dialogue...sigh.

88
Minor nitpick but Pocket Tissue should be plural, it's a packet of paper tissues used for advertising.

89
The Aerith thing needs to die (hohoho), at this point I don't even care anymore, it's just bikeshedding. I wish more people were talking about the main dialogue, I counted 3, maybe 4 people who seem to be playing the game and they all seem fairly positive.

90
I managed to re-introduce some bugs in v1.3, so they're fixed, and I've reworked the interface as follows:

There are no more commands, the first argument is autodetected as either a file or a folder. If it's a file it extracts, if a folder it archives the files in the folder.

If the second argument is omitted, it creates a folder from the stem of the lgp file if extracting (e.g. magic.lgp => magic/), or it adds .lgp to the folder when archiving, otherwise it uses the second argument as the target archive / folder.

Any other arguments are a list of files to extract / add, relative to the folder, if no files are specified it extracts / adds all files.

This also means you can just drag a file or a folder on top of the exe and it should do what you expect.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3227870/ulgp_v1.3.1.7z

(64bit only for now, will get round to a 32bit version).

91
The previous version seems to choke with larger files due to all the memory-mapping going on, I've switched back to regular filestreams again which should fix the issue

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3227870/ulgp_v1.3.7z

Command-line only for now, the invocation has a changed a little and is much simpler, just keep in mind that you must be in the directory where you want the files to be dumped/packed (the archive itself can be anywhere).

92
DLPB I have other doubt, in the Gonjun2, where Leno and Rude are talking about girls.
There are the texts:

---TEXT007---
Leno
“O-oh…”
---TEXT008---
Leno
“So we're in the same boat,eh?
Like we even have a chance with them…”

In japanese is some different:
レノ
「な、なるほど……と」
------------------------------
レノ
「つらいところだな、あんたも」

In japanese the meaning is different. Especially, the text 8 which says something about "is a hard cuestion".

Regards.

I'm not sure where you're getting "question" from, a less localized translation would be something like "So you're in a tough spot too", he's empathising with Rude and his one-way attraction to Tifa.

93
Even if the developers didn't have specifically a Scottish accent in mind, seeing as we need to pick an accent anyway Scottish makes the most sense, or Irish I guess. Just as long as it isn't Manc ;D

94
A few things:

  • Exp bar overflows in the menu for some values, seems to happen when it's close to the end or the beginning.
  • smkin_1 save point is missing a talk script, can be copied over from any other mapI'm a dumbass
  • "*** was devised" when unlocking new limit breaks, I think "was" might be superfluous, either way "devised" is kind of odd imho. "Discovered", "Unlocked" ?

95
Minor blip but the next level gauge seems stretch all the way to the right edge of the screen for certain values.

96
Here's a dump of the flevel dialog from the Japanese international version

The non-dialog text is here

Well to be honest this is all really nitpicky stuff so please don't feel like you need to go out of your way to fix things.

In any case:

ラーメン: Ramen, on the front of one of the cooking books. This is a bit strange because ramen isn't something you usually make at home in Japan, I mean it's certainly possible but uncommon (unless we're talking cup ramen but those don't have cookbooks  :-P). おかず is better imho, these are your typical small home cooking dishes that accompany rice.

作り方: DIY is just DIY in Japan, although it's not nearly as common a practice as western countries to fix up your own stuff, perhaps another gardening book like I mentioned above, so 園芸?

ユリ: Lily, but if you're going for an "encyclopaedia" style books series then perhaps this should be ユリ科, which would be the lily family (I just find it a bit odd that there's a single huge volume on just the lily).

料理書: As above probably better as 家庭料理, home cooking

裁縫: Needlework, fine
生け花: Ikebana, fine
花の百科事典: Flower encyclopaedia, fine

If possible, I would very much like to have your help for "Quality Control" purposes - I have to rely on knowledgeable people if I want to keep Japanese writings in my scenes and have them make sense.
By the way, if you could double-check what I had already considered "final", that'd be much appreciated: in the indoor scenes of Aerith's house (a couple of pages earlier), I have textured many books and folders where I tried to write a title, I'd like to make sure it's consistent (and that I didn't write gibberish). I have also a number of scenes "in progress" where I'd like your review before I launch the final renders.

Sure thing:

料理書 should just be 料理, although like a book in English called "Cuisine" it feels like it needs a little more, so perhaps 基本料理 - Basic cooking, or 家庭料理 - Home cooking (or if you're feeling cheeky チョコボ料理!)

For the photo albums (unless they're books on photography), Japanese photo albums ironically tend to have gibberish English (or often French) on them so these would look fine with an English title, like PHOTOS (or PHOTO for that authentic, grammatically incorrect feel).

作り方 is a little odd because it doesn't say what it's about. A gardening book might fit so perhaps 園芸, or 趣味の園芸 if you want to plagiarize a popular nhk series of magazines.

I can't quite make out the large green book and smaller blue book in the back, can you post the text?

I would also recommend to use a handwriting japanese font instead. I did a quick google search, you can download some here: http://www.freejapanesefont.com/category/handwriting/

Keep up the good work

Personally I'm not too sure about those, they're pen and pencil fonts, the cursive fonts I've seen so far are all brush fonts.

This clip from the unicode charts should give you a better idea of what I'm talking about

Take a look at 8FCE

To the untrained eye the characters are all pretty similar, but if you can read Chinese or Japanese the differences kind of stand out.

Don Corneo's might make sense in a Chinese font, although the feeling I always got from his den is that it's going out of it's way to be stereotypically Chinese, sort of how a lot of Chinese restaurants are decked out in Japan, in which case there is a very specific clerical script font that's always cheesily used. I'll have a look at all of the backgrounds and get back to you, perhaps we can find the original fonts used if they weren't hand drawn.

Ok so for the item shop I'd suggest a semi-cursive gyosho font for the welcome sign on the counter and the medicine jar at the back, something like Ricoh's HGGyoshotai. Here are some free fonts, the third and sixth are gyosho although these fonts only have the basic 1,000 or so educational kanji, so only 漢 is available. It should give you an idea for what to look out for though.

Incidentally those boxes at the back of the shop in the original field look like they say *配 to my eyes, can't make out the first character but it's a delivery company.

Corneo's place has a bit of a mix of stuff, but I think most of it would look good with a reisho font, the 5th font on the same page above is reisho. Then again if you want to stick as close to possible to the original design then perhaps only the golden lettering above the doors in the main hall should be reisho, the rest uses a gyosho font again, except for the gong outside which uses seal script (second to last font in the same list).

Yeah sorry, the font in particular is Chinese, there are subtle differences in how the CJK characters are rendered depending on the font and that scene has a mix of both Japanese and Chinese fonts.
