a) have to translate the swearing from the japanese version
Then you'd get much less swearing total than what's currently uncensored (damn, etc). Most of the swearing, at least on Barret's part, was unique to the translation.

Why do I get the feeling that the US translators felt a big, hulky 'black' man had to swear constantly and as such 'freely' translated it that way.

/offtopic
Because that is exactly what happened, and the retranslation project we are doing is sorting this, among multiple other things.  In the Japanese game, Barrett usually makes noises like tch (think Zell on ff8) or sigh, or words comparable to hell and damn.  But whenever these occur, the English localisation team used a swear word.  They also dumbed down Barrett's speech to be more Mr.T.  Barrett is meant to be an aggressive man who uses slangy speech but he is not meant to be a dumb ass stereotype.

See the retranslation project.

There are some screen captures in the project thread in Mods.

Troubleshooting / Re: Two probs with FF7 on Win7 x64..

First, don't double post.  Secondly, I am not sure what could cause an instant off other than perhaps hardware fault (like memory or graphic card) or severe overheating which causes bios to shut your computer off.

Yeah and Sakaguchi made a pretty decent attempt with his new team, for the game Lost Odyssey.  He was obviously a bigger part of Square than some people gave him credit.

At what point did this horrible transformation of square/enix begin?

The horrible transformation happened when they joined. Square raped Enix and the result of that night of passion is the deformed demon baby that is Squeenix

I remember being abused on one forum for saying that but unfortunately it is absolutely true.  After FFX (imho the last brilliant FF game), we started having a huge shift in the number of games being made and the quality went the other way.  We had spin off cash ins of VII by the bucket full, we had remakes, and then we had what I feel are disasters, FF12, FF13, FFX-2.  I remember with Square, when you bought Final Fantasy, you KNEW it would be quality and you would be hooked.

Then Hironobu and Nobuo jumped ship, Enix merger... bye bye.

That's pretty shocking considering the ridiculous fan service that can't wait to slap 10 on a FF game....

I don't understand what all of this is about but all I have to say about the moderation around here is this: Love it or hate it you must live with it. It's not like you have any choice :P

It isn't like the moderation round here is that bad.  Guitar was all for the rabid destruction we had before order was created.  I've been on plenty of forums where the moderation is biased and frankly, crap.  I'd be the first to whinge if I thought the mods here were sh*tty.  Fact is, they are doing a good job so stop whinging and move on if you don't like it.  It is 10X better than how it was before, where trolling was actively encouraged.

What we have today is a forum which is working.  A community which is coming together and doing what it should:  Modding FF7.  To quote Reeve in the original translation of VII "I don't give a damn about the details!"

I know what is wrong. What is wrong is that you have not done enough research before asking questions. The answer is here, and it is not hard to find.

 ;D

It's good to have order around here.  I was sick of how it used to be.

You've got over 1000 posts. I don't think he meant you.

How many people register, but never post? Those are the ones Seif meant.
Oh, yeah, if he's just talking about people with 0 posts, that's cool. That's not the way I was understanding it, though.

Obviously, yes I was.  People on 0 or even very low numbers should be culled depending on last activity.

Cheers!  and Congrats!

The battery is gone, man.  There is nothin' to be done.

I can't speak for this forum but on phpbb3, there is an auto pruning option :)

More importantly I think would be the powers to filter out those 239375735  quadrillion users that didnt post but have been members since 1802

Unfortunately that breaks game play, I want  the player to be forced to use a chocobo and avoid it when they first meet it, and then later on (much later) come back and kill it.

Releases / Re: [REL]Menu Reconstruction Mod
« on: 2010-10-01 12:50:35 »
New release soon but I wanted to let you all know why it is taking so long:

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg129/SeiferAlmasy2008/FF7%20debugging/finalmenu.png

I have been adding a few options to the installer and one of them is this.  New side menu layout.  Whilst the animation of the menu to the submenu can't possibly work, I have been editing values and testing most of this morning so that the animation back to the menu works just fine.

This actually means that with these new values I have found , it is now possible to place the side menu anywhere.  I think this looks good, and thus it is my final revision.  There are now 2 options with the menu:

1.  Keep original menu animations and placement
2.  Change to the new layout (above)

I have added a few other options too:

  • 9999 Break HP limit cheat
  • No random battles cheat [kranmer]
  • Save anywhere cheat [Kranmer]

If there are any others you can think of let me know.

I can begin soon on getting these changes ready for the retranslation version also.  It is just going to take time.

No you would still get to fight him....  only when you beat him, he won't come back? (and I would make it so that you could only beat him on a much higher level)

It is for my hardcore mod.

Is there any way to kill off Midgardsormr completely after it has been killed in battle?  No respawn?

Question about this mod path.  Why does it need a path?  Why can't it just be forced to be "/"
so that the folder is the root.

That seems to be far more logical, no?

9322
He didn't say delete the thread, he said delete the second part of the first post and make it a new thread!

To answer your question, world map dialogue is found inside a file called "mes" inside world_us.lgp.  You will have to manually hex edit.  As for how to resize the dialogue boxes of the world map, I don't know, I can't find them.

9323
;)

But...who says it's the Umbrella? ;) Perhaps it's something new...

Probably Sephiroth's replica sword ;)

edit, oh the umbrella?  Well you can get that one I suppose :P

9324
I am going to have to modify my installer I think to take into account all this :)

9325
:)  no wonder you came across that dreaded kernel text bug then.

Well, as long as you have the world_us.lgp, ff7.exe and flevel , it will still be pretty good, although of course when you pick up a weapon or item on the field, it will state the names I have given them.
