I'm thinking about getting a Live!    I guess I could get Platinum for the front plate plug thingy and the extra software.  And I've heard you can get a remote for it?  What's that do?

Live/Audigy ... well, as Jari said, they're similar. I'm not surprised you can hack drivers to get them working; after all, the basic chip used for processing in the Live is probably still there in the Audigy.

But exactly the same? I don't think so. For a start, the Audigy can process 4 EAX environments at once. When someone makes the Live! do that, then I'll start considering that rumour again....

Aaron: Well, the same sort of thing you can do with most remotes ;) Control it remotely ... I expect it'll be aimed mainly at Creative's software. Dunno, I only bought the Live value ... if I ever need the frontplate, I'll just build it myself ;)

Yeah, I can see how the frontplate wouldn't be too hard to build.  I just don't like having to reach around back my computer and dig through my huge "collection" of cables and wires to plug in my headphones, or switch them out with my speakers :-p

I'd get the audigy just for the firewire. But that faceplate is cool too.

The more I look at it, the more it looks like a better system than the SBLive! (original, non-value) that I have right now. My problem with advancing sound tech is that eventually, games like FF7 and Privateer can't use those cards. I had to dig though the trash of cards & boards we were going to throw out for an original SoundBlaster. I grabbed it, and thankfully, it works. I put it into Gaia (My old games system) and it works perfectly with Privateer. The music sucks in FF7, but at least I can play it. (Finish your FF7 MP3 player Fice!)

Well ... I can use FF7 fine on the Live! And yes, it's not exactly the same as it sounded on the AWE64, but since you *can* emulate the AWE rom on the Live, it's not a major deal. Plus it emulates the SB16 for DOS games, although generally with DOS games you *do* need a proper old sound card.

Two sound cards!  Heh.

That's what I've got anyway.  I have a SoundBlaster PCI 64 and my on-board card (which is a piece of crap).  I plan to get a SB Live! of some kind and leave the SBPCI64 in there for older games... and disable the on-board sound.  Nice that my speakers have two inputs.

FF7's music would be better on old cards if Yamaha would release a software synth that worked in 2000/XP...  The Yamaha synth (if you go to the control panel and up it to "soft" instead of "lite" and use the XG MIDIs) actually sounds pretty dang good.

My SoundBlaster PCI 64 seems to work fine with DOS games.  Except under Windows XP.

Yeah, no kidding.  As you know, I'm happy with my current sound card (the XG Hardware card), considering that with the card I have hardware XG for FF7, Hardware DLS for FF8 (well, thanks to some Win98SE WDM drivers I found!), full EAX 2.0 Hardware Acceleration (doesn't work on the WDM drivers, so now EAX and Hardware DLS are mutually exclusive on my present setup), full A3D 1.0 support, Full DirectSound Acceleration on 4.1 setups......

Ok, while some of these features are standard on newer cards, this card's been around for like a year and a half.  It cost considerably less (total price: $45) than what the high-end Live!'s were at the time I bought it, so it was a good deal.
