My only concern is the R06 modding framework, I feel it may split the community with some modders supporting reunion and others 7th heaven, as right now 7th heaven I feel is an excellent tool, one can just add mods to it, remove it, all without manual fiddling, its click and play almost.  The only real issue is the main catalog has been allowed to get out of date.

Also you use precompiled exe's which is probably the main reason 7th heaven has been problematic with reunion, hext loading would likely make it work so much better.   It allows much more modularity in selective use of features and co existence with other mods.  But I accept this isnt a 7th heaven thread.  So will stop there, but maybe to hope one day you reconsider your stance on allowing the two to be used together with your support.
I don't really think there'll be a split... sure, maybe some grumbling and grousing, but in software the better solution typically wins (n.b. I am specifically disclaiming the systemd abomination here).  I'm looking forward to seeing what DLPB has in mind as a mod management system since turBoss seems to have lost interest in 7H.  7H has its warts, but as long as mod authors split their work into sensible pieces (one of the very few things I think Remako did right), it's still a pretty user-friendly solution to what would otherwise be a very user-unfriendly task.

I've also gotten the impression that aali was compensated for it in some way

I think a lost opportunity for them tho was on the PS4 version to not use any of the mods from this site in that build.
Doing so would require lawyers, royalties, and all that other fun stuff.

Could just be that the servers have maxed out their bandwidth for the day (they're freebies, after all), so apart from checking to make sure the URL is correct, just sit tight for a day or two and see if your next attempt succeeds.

In the compatibility settings of ff7.exe (and ff7_bc.exe if you're using reunion/menu overhaul/beacause), enable the tickbox for "Run in 6480x480"

356
This is proving difficult.

I dont think I will be able to do all my wanted improvements to the menu overhaul but there is good news.
KISS principle... Keep It Stupid Simple ;)  Or rather, in this case, release what's reasonable and easy to do (and it sounds like you've already got a huge amount done), then go back and do the nutso parts later in an update to the original mod, or as a second stand-alone.  I'm not sure what EQ2Alyza has in mind for v3.0, but I *think* an easier update mechanism is part of it.  From what he's posted publicly, I think whatever DLPB has in mind for his mod management method makes updates something the author can push (or at least advertise) themselves, rather than sending them through a catalog "gatekeeper."

In the "Compatibility" settings of whichever .exe you're using (ff7.exe or ff7_bc.exe), enable the "Run at 640x480" flag.

In your deletions and reinstalls, did the tick box for "Direct mode" get unchecked?

For reference, this is what I see in the FINAL FANTASY VII\shaders\ directory, and this is what I see when I open up FF7_GameConverter_7H.exe. Is that what it's supposed to look like? If so, is 7thHeaven 1.56RC6 looking in the right place, for the right files? If so, can someone explain to me how that works, because I'm obviously missing some knowledge that would make this all make sense.
I haven't played with the shaders myself (yet, anyways...), but my folders (both game and archive) are identical.  Apart from the forward/backslash issue EQ2 already pointed out in the .xml, there's also this little piece in ff7_opengl.cfg that might have somehow been borked by a previous mod/install, which the converter isn't automatically repairing:
Code: [Select]
# post-processing shader, used to apply fullscreen effects
post_source = shaders/SmartBloomAdvanced.post
enable_postprocessing = no
As I said, I have shaders turned off right now (hence enable = no), but perhaps the source line got munged?

360
why use the 1.54 version?
Because the 1.56RCx series suffers from a multitude of various and sundry bugs

361
I would suggest running the registry cleaning tool mentioned in the FAQ first, then the converter.  There may be old keys hanging around and getting in the way just like another fine person I helped a couple days ago who was also coming back to FF7 after an extended period away.

Completely reinstalled the game and changed the ff7_opengl.cfg to what you said it needed to be changed to, since the tutorial on the Blogspot always gave me that audio problem which isn't fixable (believe me, I tried multiple times). Before I reinstalled everything, I tried changing the config in the 7H conversion tool so that it wouldn't use my default MIDI synth, but a different synth that I installed, but that just crashed the game instantly when I tried to run it. But with the instructions you gave me, the game runs near flawlessly and I have no audio problems this time around. The only problems I have are just a few hiccups here and there, but they seem to be the same hiccups I experienced in the normal Steam version.
Well, the Blogspot (or Remako, for that matter) tutorial wasn't written by the people who actually developed and maintain 7H.    Anyways, as long as you're getting regular non-MIDI sound, I'd just as soon download the "Media - Music and Sound" mod from the default catalog, or "Tsunamods Team - Arranged Soundtrack" from Strife98's supplemental, and replace all your sounds with that.  They're both big improvements over the original.

Great :D  Back in your original note is the message
Code: [Select]
[00000000] ERROR: init_indirect failed, scaling and postprocessing will be disabledso I have a feeling you'll be stuck with 640x480 resolution.  That said, we can still do a couple of things to try to improve things for you.  First up is adjusting the "texture_cache_size" from 256 to 512, and if that works, to 768.  That should cut down on screen transition times coming out of battles (though not necessarily entering them).  You can also try re-enabling, one at a time, the "use_mipmaps" (should make graphics upscale mods look even better) and "fancy_transparency" (dialog boxes and some spell textures, I think) options.

EDIT:

Got it to work; followed the instructions on the Blogspot page about the Remako mod, and it works almost perfectly. The only problem is that it doesn't play the music in VGMstream, but through my computer's garbage MIDI synth. Any ideas on how to fix?
ARRRGGGHHH!!!  @#(%@ Remako !#%(!%(&!!!!
Ok, shit storm aside (and I *do* know exactly how the profanity filter's going to change that :teehee:), are you still having sound troubles?  If so, re-run the 7H conversion tool, choose overwrite at the beginning, and fix up your sound settings when it calls FF7_Config.  You'll need to do that any time you need to change sound settings, as there are registry keys that need adjusted depending on your selected options.  Running FF7_Config outside the 7H Conversion tool will jack those keys up.  After running the conversion tool, go back to ff7_opengl.cfg and double-check that the changes we just made so the game will run have been preserved.

Ug... there's nothing in your config that jumps out at me as being the reason it fails to progress further in the startup process.  If you've already checked to make sure your drivers are the latest and greatest, we can try playing with a couple of the options to make sure it's not a memory issue, but unless aali comes out of retirement or Maki's watching this thread, you might be out of luck :(  Here's what I'd suggest trying (and use Notepad/Wordpad to make these edits to ff7_opengl.cfg).  I'll only include the lines to change, but basically we're trying to turn off all the bells and whistles, then if that works, slowly adding things back in to identify the culprit:

window_size_x = 640
window_size_y = 480
preserve_aspect = no
fullscreen = no

fancy_transparency = no

texture_cache_size = 256

use_mipmaps = no

Final Fantasy VII with mods requires Open GL 3.0 or above

No, driver only looks for 2.0... here's my start-up chain:
Code: [Select]
[00000000] INFO: FF7/FF8 OpenGL driver version 0.8.1b
[00000000] INFO: Auto-detected version: FF7 1.02 US English

Now that's not to say his chipset isn't missing something else (being mobile, that wouldn't surprise me), but the OGL version isn't the problem.

USMC: Could you also post your ff7_opengl.cfg?  Same folder as the other two.  I'm wondering if maybe it's trying to use a feature that's not present, and if we can shut it off, you'll be able to play.

GC looks good, but this might be the problem:
Quote
[00000000] INFO: Intel Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family 2.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.2086
[00000000] INFO: OpenGL 2.0 support detected
I'll have to poke around and see if I can find anything, but it wouldn't be unheard of for a mobile chip to not fully support OpenGL :(  In the meanwhile, check Intel's website and make sure you've got the latest and greatest driver.

There is no mouse.
Zuul said that about Dana, too, but we know how that turned out...

Hi! I cannot seem to get this to work. It is active in 7th Heaven. I have tried both options. The only other mod I use is Remako. Any insight into what I may be doing wrong?
Post your ff7_opengl.cfg file

Post up your GC and APP logs.  Both should be in your FF7 install directory.

Try pulling a fresh download of the conversion tool, as well as running the registry cleaning tool... I'm reading the batch file and don't see anything that would cause a crash at that point in the process unless the movie path evaluation is somehow failing, either because the batch file itself is corrupt (though I'd expect the whole converter to fail unpacking if that were the case), or there's some stale registry keys hanging around and getting in the way.

In the compatibility settings of the .exe you're using, activate "Run in 640x480"

I am having the same issue now, game not been touched, simply put it worked when I last ran it couple of years back, now it tries to launch, quick tiny beep then closes.
Many are the previously-working installs that have been broken by a Microsoft patch.  Re-running the converter is typically sufficient to fix it, though in your case since it's been so long, it probably wouldn't hurt to use the registry cleaning tool first so that the converter is presented with what it thinks is a clean slate.

Game convertor tool seems a mess, applies all sorts of patches.  But I am definitely setting the sound card, and it still does it.  What is that tool even for, just for single mod called reunion which not everyone uses?
Others have also called it a mess, but it does what it's designed to do... drop in aali's OpenGL driver with a default config that should work for nearly everybody, implement the necessary folder structures for 7H to work, call ff7_config and set the necessary registry keys, then apply the cd and (optional) laptop patches.  As for Reunion, it does drop those .exe files as well, but there's a lot more going on under the hood.

374
Catalog 3 is still in early testing, it'll be a while before it actually hits the wire.

375
#2: After #1 it played perfectly... and then Windows 10 updated to 1903 :P sooo it stopped working, it just stayed in a black screen, the log indicated an internal error but no other info, so I unpached and repatched, same problem, reinstalled the game with same config and same thing, so instead of looking for the problem I reinstall the whole thing completely only saving the mods/7th heaven folder so I don't have to re-download them... well that didn't worked, the game launched but activating any mod crashed 7th heaven  with an oops error (even while deleting all the 7H files plus cache), by deleting the mods and downloading them again worked.

Hope this helps someone
Ahh, gotta love Windows updates.  Re-run the game conversion tool, and choose "Overwrite" when asked at the beginning.  That generally clears up a good 90% of Microsoft's bungling of things.  If you run the registry key wiper beforehand, it'll also give you an opportunity to use the dummy ff7_disc1.iso and re-define your program and movie paths.
