My idea is to create a clear and simple port.  No messing around with the storyline, no mucking up the graphics, just an engine powerful enough to interpret LGP archives and the data stored within, that will then render the polygons and play the music.  A replacement for ff7.exe is the best explination.

I have been thinking about a re-coding of the FFVII engine such that it is more portable (eg, use OpenGL instead of DirectX, make open source, code in ANSI C as much as possible.) If I implemented all of the file format decoding algorthims that are available and used as much of the *.lgp files as I possibly could, how much do you think would have to hard coded into the source?

Archive / Wine, Linux and FFVII
« on: 2003-11-27 17:07:42 »
Thanks for the help everyone! Skillster, wine creates files in ~/.wine/ called "user.reg" and "system.reg". Sice I don't have a easy copy of reegit available on linux I'll just grep for the string.  As for the screenshots, I really don't have anywhere top put any, though I'd be happy to email you some.

EDIT: I mounted my windows partition, used regedit and found to my surprise that the key was "Z:/" and "Z:/FF7/Movies".  Considering that in wine, my "D:" drive is set to be the cdrom and "Z:" my Linux partition, I can understand it's problems.

I've been trying to get FFVII to work under Linux with Wine (A building of standard Windows APIs for Unix). It installed perfectly, but when I try to run it, I get the "Please insert Disk 1,2 or 3" message.  I remember there is a registry entry you can change to get FFVII to read FMVs of the hard disk, but does anyone remember what you change?  I am fairly sure it just won't read /mnt/cdrom, so finding a way for it to run without the cdrom would be wonderful.

Ficedula:
On my computer the Open/Lgp and Open Location buttons are switched(as in opening a lgp opens a location)  Not sure if this happens to other people, but it seems pretty easy to fix.

Asus GeForce 4 Ti 4200

Windows 98 SE

FF7 is cofigured to run in 640x480 fullscreen, hardware accelerated with my GeForce 4.

Stupid Internet Exploiter (won't let me view the .png's!  I downloaded two of the pics and they look great!  Keep up the good work on the remake project.

FAQs and Tutorials / A few things to add
« on: 2002-12-15 18:29:56 »
I know I'm not that far from being a newbie myself, but I have a couple additions.

Smilies have a place in a message board, but too many can be annoying. If the amount of smileys you post is more than 1/5 of your word count, you may consider cutting some of them.

Post counts are simply used to show how much a member participates in discussion.  "Spaming" the board (repeatedly posting messages without any content) to raise your post count could get you reset (Your post count goes to zero.)

Everyone interprets things differently than others depending on their culture, life experiences, and many other factors.  If somebody posts a message that could be considered insulting or offensive to you, don't immediately flame them.

If somebody posts artwork asking for advice don't just post "It's great" or "It sucks".  Always tell them something they could do to improve it, which is much more helpful.

General Discussion / FFVII-2??

I doubt that the project willl ever get off of the ground myself.  This seems like it's just a idea right now, probably in a few months the whole thing will just become moot.  If it does make it into production, I don't think it would have much of a effect on the remake project.  You guys won't sell it, right?

Troubleshooting / Background viewer
« on: 2002-11-05 00:32:32 »
If I remember correctly, some backgrounds are displayed incorrectly and there's no way to change it.  My only advice would be to try another program, which might work though I'm pretty sure all of the programs for viewing backgrounds are based off of Qhimms code for gast.

Archive / FF7's menus
« on: 2002-11-05 00:24:33 »
I ran ff7 on a p 120 with a voodoo 1 and the menus were not to bad.  However, on that computer, I was used to stuff running slow (I was also raytracing with povray) so it could have been my imagination.  On my current computer FF7 doesn't work at all  :( so I can't test it.

General Discussion / the rules of ff
« on: 2002-10-28 00:47:31 »
I'm not sure about that.  It seems like some of them are on the same world at different times.  I'm not quite sure (because I haven't played 2-6 much) but I get the impression that the "four crystals" plotline is used in more than one game.  Final Fantasy 8 is definitely not on the same world as ff6 or 5.  But I did find a clever little timeline of a single Final Fantasy world on the net that went from 1-7.  It seemed to fit together pretty well to.

General Discussion / FF7 Model Viewer/Editor

Sorry Intel-Xenon, I'm not very good at linking on this board. The links were blender3d.com and milkshape3d.com.  And for anybody who asks, yes I do own a legal copy of Milkshape.

As for your sephiroth question, short answer, not that I know of.  For a while,
I was tring to reconstruct Aeris in Milkshape.  First off, I was new to milskshape (I had only used Povray/Moray) so that may have made it harder, but essentially I dicovered one valuable tool.  In Lgp tools, in the hrc file that the charecter is in, It will tell you which objects to use for which bones, and those usually are good clues as to what body part it is.

Hope this is helpful.

I think Lgp Tools can extract backgrounds, just left click on the image and save it as a .bmp.  Besides, Even if they couldn't export them, you could still take a screen capture (which is probably the best course of action if I'm wrong).  In the case of importing a background, I have not seen any way to do it.

Yeah I'm one of the evil none paying hotmail users.  Oddly enough, I haven't gotten any spam at all. (Other than their offers to upgrade to the "premium service" or whatever they call it.)

How did Cloud win over Alucard?  I'm not a huge fan of Castlevania but still! (Of course, seeing as how this board is probably mostly in favor of Cloud I'd better keep my mouth shut.)

EDIT: Small error

Considering how I don't have the money jto buy either Max  or Lightwave, I think I'll have to stick with good old Povray. (Although I am considering a student version of LW.)

Wow. These images are really good. Just out of curiosity, what 3d program do you use?
