Releases / Re: [FF7PC-98/Steam] New Threat Mod (v1.5)
« on: 2019-06-29 23:17:47 »
Stupid question time. Firstly, I'm very curious about this mod. While I love graphics mods (I find Remako for instance revolutionary) I'd always wished for mods that adjust the storyline or events or add new content without breaking canon. Example: I loved the idea behind the Jessie mod, although when I tried it unfortunately it didn't work properly.

Back to the topic, two or three days ago I installed 7H and Remako but spent almost an entire day to get them working, and I did! Using integrated graphics too which I heard would definitely break 7H with graphical mods. Great experience. However, I hadn't noticed New Threat because I found its description on 7H very vague and from the name assumed it's a hardcore mod. (After reading up on it, it sounds awesome.) Big mistake. I believe I've invested close to nine hours into FFVII and I'm currently at Fort Condor. My question is: would it be a big deal if I activated the mod this far into the game? Compared to the hard work you've put into this mod those nine hours are nothing. However, I'd probably wait a few months before restarting the game if I must do that.

I also must ask about the load order. I've read about how to prioritise it (ordering by the mod category) but since this seems to contain some of everything, should I place it at the top? Here's my current mod setup: https://pastebin.com/9L7efFg8

This is awesome, great for translation projects. Unfortunately I can't see a lot of those happening, but it's cool that you're doing one. Sounds ambitious. It would be funny if someone could rewrite FFVIII's text into a comedy version. (Something witty though and not full of fail.)

Looking forward to your future releases. I'm new to FFVIII editing and this looks cool.

Will there be any roles available for very small role characters like guards who only speak a couple of lines?

Wow, fantastic! I anticipate any updates.

Wow, interesting project. I'd help but I thought my British voice would be a setback. Interesting you're accepting British VAs since it would be odd if a lot of characters had different accents. I'd like to see how this turns out. I would contribute myself, but I don't really have any experience and don't think I'd be much good anyway!

I'll keep watching this project though. I'm looking forward to it. It would be nice if you could combine it with some of the more popular modifications when the project goes "gold".

So it is in theory possible? But didn't you read that quote? The data is read in a different way. Even if it is possible, I bet the models will need to use the same amount of indices/vertices (I don't know much about 3D modelling so correct me if I'm wrong) as the PSX originals.

That's a real shame. I thought it'd be pretty cool. The thing I hate about FFVII/VIII PC modding is that unless you back up the entire game - if you do something wrong - you're fucked. Everything's really fiddly and you can only have one installation obviously, so there's no multiple mod loading. That's of course expected with most PC games. Oh well, it was worth asking.

I don't think looking at a few games' levels is going to be confirmation of the PSP's 'graphics' being worse than the PS2's. The PSP has quite similar specs to the PS2's. And, I'm not talking about having brilliant-quality new models. Just the ability to customise them a bit. Only slightly higher-poly than the originals.

Is there no way to edit the models/other data in the PSX version? It would be so great, but probably unlikely.

It's not the black box problem. It's horizontal lines. But I'll try the patches anyway and get back to you if it doesn't work. Thanks.

Ugh, software mode... *shudders*

I have problems with lots of horizontal lines with my notebook. I have a Geforce Go card, not sure which one. It works generally okay in software mode except the soundfont music lags at times, which is funny considering my notebook has a 3ghz processor. Anyway, I didn't previously notice the Geforce patch so I will try that tonight and see if it works! I'll also see if there's any anti-aliasing options on the Geforce menu but I don't think there was. Oh well, I'll snoop around on the forums.

This patch looks mighty good - I'll apply it when I get home. I bet the backgrounds are pretty blocky, being double the pixels and all, right? They're bad enough on 640x480!  :-D I wouldn't dream of turning on FSAA though. I have to turn it off every time I wanna play F.E.A.R. which looks turd with it on.

This is all very cool. If only we could edit all the field data to create a custom FF game from. Of course, that's never going to happen, but it's good to dream.

I just registered here, and all this looks pretty sweet to say the least. Is this the soundfont patch then? It's a pity that the replacement music is in MP3 format as it can't be looped seamlessly, as opposed to a MOD format, but I guess it's better than MIDI! Now I just need to buy FFVII/VIII PC over the next few days!  :)
