Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: Joey on 2001-01-02 09:55:00
There seems to be a lot of error messages. It reports that MFC42D.DLL has something wrong......

The SaINT obviously compiled the debug version of Garden, which requires the debug version of the Microsoft Foundation Classes. Try picking up the latest files from MS' web site, or get SaINT to compile the release version.

any difference qhimm between the debug version and the normal one?
Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: dagsverre on 2001-01-03 01:49:00
The debug version is a little larger and slower.

hmm, i remeber qhimm saying something about athor archives where just 'sampled' and only the field archive was extracted (in the debug version), so maybe in the release version...

Joey, but you work at SquareSoft, right? They can give such a proggie to their 'part-time-staffs', and if not, your friend can help you, can't he?

We are not supposed to have something to do with cheat programs. The last guy I know who brought a cheat program to work and it was discovered by everyone ended up whacked by everyone and an egg on his face everyday until he quitted.

Joey: I believe Ged's point was that, since you work at Square, wouldn't you already know how FF8 works? Wouldn't you have access to complete programs much more advanced than Griever? (The programs originally written to make FF8 in the first place.)

Also, on a side note, I'm confused. Why would someone bring a cheat program into work? Wouldn't he be more concerned with trying to take company stuff home with him?(like those programs I mentioned)

Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: Joey on 2001-01-10 14:24:00
1) No I don't because I did not program FF8. If I did, I would have to refer to those who made it and my secret will be....

2)Don't know. maybe he wanted to expiriment with something......

Anyway, Do you guys know where can I get Source code for VB?

Ok now does anyone find this funny.. Joey wouldnt square have "cheat" programs to test the game.. I thought thats one of the things they used to beta test the game.. see if it crashed if you did this or that... In fact i believe thats how cheat codes were discovered. They are basically for the programmers / beta testers to fully test the game in all areas.

there are two versions
 a debug one
and a release one.
the one your using is the debug one
Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: Srethron Askvelhtnod on 2001-01-11 20:14:00
ksfung: If you're going to run the debug version, you'll need to get the debug version of MCFC. I believe it is available from Microsoft's site.
Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: on 2001-01-12 03:29:00
Well, I am not sure about a debugged version of the dll MCFC, but mabye http://solo.abac.com/dllarchive/

can help, it's a DLL archive site.

Post by: CKtalon on 2001-01-13 15:31:00
how do u use the full version?
Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-13 17:43:00
AARRGGHH!
any way, youve got to have a full install of ff8,
then click on the new project/decompile button then point gardens to your ff8 dir, and then it will decompile ff8's data files, simple?
Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: sENGzAI on 2001-01-13 20:30:00
then ??? how to edit it ???
Title: Garden by The SaINT

Fire up Garden, and drag and drop files into it, basically.

I run Garden.exe
There's no new project..
only open project/decompile/compile options...
That's all..so how?
Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-14 12:32:00
ahem (i think you know what im going to say :D ),
well then isnt garden supposed to EDIT FF8 DATA FILES!!!!
So wouldnt DECOMPILE be a simple choice (and the most obvious!!  :x )
puff. I think im gonna have to right page about HOW TO USE GARDEN, EVEN IF QHIMM MADE IT ONE OF THE EASIEST APPS TO EVER USE!!! (if qhimm made it then its gonna be easy to use, cause it aint got no instructions!!)
:x anymore half hearted qustions about garden will be dealt with the same stiff lipped responce from me  :D! only post serious questions about garden!!

Ficedula: Heh. Keyboard wore out?

ksfung: Heh. I'll let the Skillster handle that one. Oh, wait. Maybe he already did.

Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-15 01:04:00
ok, im cool now.
when you open your new project file (which you get after decompressing ff8), you will see the projects name in the list box to the left.
click it to open the folder and you should see a data or ff8 folder appear, now keep clicking ff8>data>field>eng> (i think) now you get a big list of folders, pick one  :D
they are all locations, eg bg (balamb garden) FH (fisherman horizon), now open that folder and youll see folders for all the locations in that area (aa, ab, ac ,etc) now open one, youll see a list of files in the box in the bottom left corner, find the one with a *.msd (dialog file) extention, d' click it to open it and viola!
you should see dialog on the right.
now after editing it, (if you wanna see your changes in ff8), save and recompile ff8 data files and fire up ff8

SO..Garden is used only for editing message boxes?
Does it have any other uses like being able to view the background or field data or 3d models of Squall and co.?
If so...please tell me..Thanks!

CKtalon: Yes, only text. Perhaps some crazy programmer will someday finish it, which would mean that there would be other features that aren't yet implemented (such as viewing 3D models, backgrounds, etc).

Is there any way of just decompiling the text only? As I find that decompling takes up about 1gig of hard disk space!
Title: Garden by The SaINT
Post by: The Skillster on 2001-01-18 20:07:00
theres no other way around it.
besides if you just extract the dialog files, how are you going to recompile the whole archive to use it with ff8?
unless qhimm comes up with a ficedula style updating feature...

Unless he changes his mind, Qhimm's done with Garden. Maybe someday, someone else will continue the project.

Maybe I shouldnt have released the debug version. Some people here, are experiencing high blood pressure because of it.
BTW, we shuld switch to another topic title. This one is misleading, "Garden by The SaiNt".

The SaiNt: Well, it's not really that bad. It's just a tad annoying when someone posts a question, you answer, then someone else posts exactly the same question several lines below or even makes another thread about it. Still, not a big deal.

Ah. The ever-so popular Ficedula and Qhimm. I admire Ficedula because (s)he actually updates their site. Qhimm's just sits there with the same old content. Me and my friends have been waiting a year and a half for it to be updated. And nothing has happened. Please take this into consideration Qhimm.

Firstly, I'm a he. No offence taken, I guess I don't reveal much personal info

Secondly ... *how* old is this thread??! Don't see resurrections from this far back very often

It is rather odd that you'd pick an old thread like this to begin posting in...

Fice:  I've always thought your nick was rather masculine-not that I dwell on those sorts of things.  Given that this forum is 97% male, I *usually* assume "non-gendered" nicks are male, unless otherwise stated.

Every single time someone asks me about updating the page, I quote what is written there. I'm having problems with my ISP, so I can't update the site. Is that really so hard to comprehend, or is there a human urge to annoy people about obvious things?

In the little spare time I have, I do work on some of my programs. I won't tell you which, because I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. I also somehow find time to work out the new design and fiddle with the client-side processing thingys... and now with this new board, I'll have to re-do a lot of it
