I wasn't sure where else I could post this with a straight face. See, I'm graduating this spring (woo!) from Iceland's Academy of the Arts (lhi.is - essentially minuscule departments for most artforms and architecture brought together under one administration to make running them a credible bother), music-department, playing the horn as my major, and as part of that I'll give a concert which appears to be mostly set for 9/5. If anyone of you happens to be in the general area and wouldn't mind rounding off the day with some music written for the horn, do swing by. I don't think there will be an entrance fee - isn't usually the case - but now the school isn't paying this bill anymore. Most likely not.

And, hm, there will be no need for the whole community to turn up! It's possible I'll have (at least?) half a dozen relatives coming, maybe a friend or two from back home, other kids from school (hey, I'm older'n most of 'em!), maybe even a small delegation from ISO (it's a small community, and my teacher works there) - and the target venue expects to seat around 80. Mkay? There will probably be a webradio kind of stream - they like to do that.

If you like to have the most up-to-date information on this, it's safest to contact me on Facebook (I just created an event, and all): Arve Eriksson
(My profile picture should look quite purple.)

Releases / Re: [REL] Final Fantasy VII FMV Restoration

Well, this is a cause for celebration! %&"#%& shame I'm not at home where FF7 is...

28
That looks like the right file - though next step might be to tell Explorer not to hide known file-extensions. *Swears enough to make Barret blink over the dumbing-down of operating systems of today*
I don't know how to progress from here, unfortunately. I think I saw a post where someone was having similar problems, though. See if you can find it and follow any suggestions posted there (search for that error-line about not being able to open ff7input.cfg).
Two more things you can do:
1. Look around for Aali's OpenGL-stuff. Somewhere there's a link to a different set of shaders in case of problems. Back up your current shaders, and try the other pack.
2. See if your ff7input.cfg is write-protected, or hidden, or whatever. If necessary, change the attributes so it can be written to.

29
Ok, then it's something this mod changes. Good (?). Look for a file called APP.LOG or CRASH.LOG (should be in the main FF7-directory) and post its contents.

porcupinetree: I doubt I can help (I also doubt I'll return soon enough to get a reply in before everyone else have had their say and sorted it out; I think it's been years since my last post here), but YOU can help US help YOU by providing details on your graphics hardware and drivers (as seen in XP, if it differs from Mac-side) in the meantime. Does unmodded FF7 work? (FF7 1.02, with or without Aali's driver)

Tadah, I crawl out of the woodwork again! Regarding all this about CD-images and prompts about inserting the right disc, I just want to add that you can adjust what drive FF7 tries to find its discs in through the registry. Just search for your installation path (quickest way to find the right place) and look for an entry called 'data_drive' or something like that - adjust to point it to where your CD or image is. Yes, you should even be able to keep all the files on your harddrive and point to that location - not sure what happens if you put all the data in one spot instead of dividing it up per disc then, when the CD-change points come.

Aaand... Sorry if I'm a great big git by asking this, but is this the sort of definite version? That is, I won't need to worry about checking back here for an updated version in the near future? I notice it's been quite a while since 2.5.1 was released. (And if you think that's a complaint, there WILL be trouble!)
Well, definite until new interesting mods come along, anyway?

General Discussion / Re: Wheres Qhimm?

Hm, I suppose I wouldn't mind hearing what company that would be, but it's good to hear he's doing well for himself all the same.

32
Ok, I just took care of Kelkoo's request. It should be in his mailbox momentarily.

Fermy: I tried to download your savefile, but Mediafire said it wasn't there. What's the story?

p2dc: You may have put your foot in it regarding one little technicality there. :-P If your savestate was made with the Platinum-version, I should be able to help you after the 10th, though. Even so, it would probably be much better to use .mcr-files for this.

(And before anyone gets any funny ideas, I've e-mailed some of the people at the beginning of the topic to see if they still need help. Have to work through the back-log too...)

[Edit] Also, I'm playing through the game testing some text-modifications I made. I've hit a glitch that happens both with and without mods, it seems. If anyone is interested, the topic I posted for it is titled "Showstopper glitch before flashback at Kalm" - right at the start of the game. (MIFFED!) I can upload it to Spacesend or something in a heartbeat, just send a PM to remind me, or something.
Never mind, I managed to get myself through. My topic shall be updated. Move along, there's nothing to see here.

And now cwtan should be a little bit happier.

Now Zeyta too is dealt with. Productive lil' chap, me!

[Edit AGAIN] p2dc: I couldn't use the savestate, unfortunately.

Troubleshooting / Re: When I Insert Disc 1 Nothing Happens
« on: 2009-04-25 19:10:07 »
Try setting compatibility-mode to Win98/95. Also, I for one have been having problems with the high-res patch. Try running without it, if the compatibility-fix doesn't help.

34
I tried it with the official 1.02-exe - same result. Or do you mean playing through the game up to that point with no edit of any sort, from the very top, so to speak?

[Edit] Haha! I managed to get through on my own! I used Jenova to give myself some 8-inch cannons and other attack-items, and they worked as advertised! Strange, though, that regular attacks wouldn't target the dragon while items did... Anyway, this is SOLVED. And I LIKE 8-inch cannons.

35
So, now I run into my first serious FF7-problem past getting it to run at all in XP. Howzat? Right, the problem.
During said flashback, there's the scene where Cloud paces round and round the Shinra-truck, asking the fellow soldier about his motion-sickness and getting excited about his new Pre-Emptive materia. (You know the one?) Right after that, there is a battle with a big green dragon. And the catch is that the dragon absolutely cannot be targeted. It can use Flamethrower all it wants, but Young Cloud and Sephiroth can only attack themselves - as if the dragon just isn't there. In other words, I can watch until hell freezes over as Sephiroth tries to kill himself and the dragon torches Cloud again and again. No crash as such.
This seems to be patch/mod-independent - it happens with official 1.02, PRP, tweaked flevel.lgp as well as unmodified, irrespective of kernel2.bin-tweaks...
System is a laptop: HP Pavilion dv1000. I'm unsure about the exact specs (it's not my own), but it's running XP SP3. Compatibility-mode is set to... either Win95 or 98. Won't run otherwise. For reasons we can discuss later, I'm running the game through a disc-emulator - images are prepared from my own LEGIT discs, I'll have you know. :)

Does anyone know of a fix, or is this a case for the Playthrough-request topic?

FF7 Tools / Loveless - a FF7 text editor [v.1 - 2.5]
« on: 2009-04-12 07:41:15 »
Just wanted to say: Silent Warrior LOVES Loveless.

I got some memory-leaks in v2.4, are they gone? (Also some degree of bloat, but I guess that's the encoding...)

Well, just make sure you're not deleting text that is actually displayed, or otherwise used in the game. With so much text, you'll have your work cut out for you... However, if you find any references to the Junon-events in Midgar sceneries and vice-versa, you can probably safely assume they can be deleted. Look out for the strings telling the .exe what music to play (usually at the end of the message-list)! HOWEVER: Text-data doesn't take up an awful lot of space, and Loveless v2.4 seems to compress the .lgp to a lesser degree than the original, so the file will most likely get bigger anyway. Unless, of course, it's fixed in v2.5, as your screenshot shows you using. Where did you get that?? The version in the wiki is 2.4! I wantsss it!

Archive / Re: Help Please Cannot recruit Yuffie
« on: 2009-04-07 14:44:33 »
Compatibility! :x Grr!

Prince Lex: It has helped me on several occasions, actually - though perhaps not including anything FF. And, yes, that has only ever helped in getting the game to at all start, never mind what goes on after that...

Clink: Do you have any patches installed? If you don't, have a look around the forum and the main site - there are a few patches available for various little things. Patch 1.02 and 'Chocobo-crash fix' are probably mandatory. (And with Jenova you can probably hack Yuffie into your party so you won't have to deal with the encounter if it keeps crashing.)

39
Uh... Is it just me, or doesn't this have some unexpected side-effects? (Or maybe the main executable farted?) When I looked in at the Junk shop in Balamb, right in the beginning, I could get maybe half of Squall's different gunblades, Quistis' and Selphie's strongest weapons, at least one glove for Zell... (Well, I say 'get' - components notwithstanding, dig?) That's not having read any weapon-magazine at all at that point - I don't remember that from my previous play-through. Not that I complain, I suppose...

40
All I did was to get Loveless and start working. It doesn't seem to be any greater secret than that. Of course, you'd probably love to have a dedicated tester to go along with the effort. There are A TON of things you'll want to test to make sure you worked with the correct area...
(Note that Loveless doesn't seem to compress the files as much as Square/Eidos...)

Well, methodic determination is key. There are many files, many conversations, an awful lot to touch up, plenty of opportunity for dubious continuity in textual polish.

FAQs and Tutorials / Re: STICKY: FF8 Enhancing
« on: 2009-03-20 21:12:22 »
Mumiah: Hold yer horses right there! Gamma-adjustments shouldn't be adjusted unless you really know you need it (or unless funky old games like Riven commands you to), but anisotropic filtering (AF) and anti-aliasing (AA) is definitely something you'll have interest in working with. If you don't remember what the gamma was set to before you changed it, see if you can find some 'Reset'-button - or if you're satisfied with your present gamma-level, just don't worry about it. It only changes monitor brightness, more or less.

Now, to AA/AF. AA affects the contours of the 3D-models (through various possibly ingenious ways), BUT it will make demands on your GPU - loads of calculations needing quite a few core-MHz. Depending on what you set the FF8 Launcher to, and your monitor-size, you might not actually notice a difference between 2x and 4x - never mind 6x and 12x - but your GPU definitely will. If you notice lacking performance, AA is the option you should reduce first and see if it helps.
AF takes samples of the textures and scales them to... well, different resolutions, I'm not sure about the inner magickery of that. Now, this will take HUGE chunks of your VRAM. If this were a somewhat new game with 4092x4092-textures... Don't. But, well, as FF8 probably predates 1024x1024-textures, it should be safe to set the AF-multiplier to just about anything you like. You just most likely won't notice a difference. :-P The affected parts are textures on 3D-models, either placed at an odd viewing-angle or far in the distance. In other words, you MIGHT notice it A LITTLE in the combat-screens, and you'll notice it more on the world map, but NOT AT ALL in field-maps (cities, Garden, 2D-backgrounds, those tings).

(Actually: In older games - and FF8 before FF8 Launcher - AF has a tendency to cause really interesting effects. I don't remember what causes the grid-artifacts in FF8 (7 too?), but it definitely did something in FreeFalcon 3/Falcon 4 while in 2D-cockpit view.)

Oo, oo, can I have it, too? Of course, I won't have a chance to use it until around May, but this will give me something to look forward to. I suppose Moomba is all I'll need as well - I only care about the text, and I have neither time nor proper tools for anything else. (Though I'd love the hell out of ANY program that will let me change the music used in-game in a better way than running Winamp with FF8 muted...)

43
Not only poor translation, I'd like to say... Garden... I tried to use it once, but I only got the source-code in the download - pretty useless when you don't have a compiler at hand. :-P It's usable now, then?

44
Oh, beep me sideways... OK, so here I am, monkeying around with FF7Music (effin' MIDI...), first pass de-Engrishification complete, the game boots just fine with the new LGP, and then what? I make another attempt at getting FF7Music to work, and the new exe won't run! I am GRUMPY! Still, it is A touched-up dialog (and some 130 Mb instead of the original 120+-something). Not a 100% perfect v1.0 sort of thing - some text-windows need adjusting, but, meh... Some day I'll have time to take another crack at it - this time to nullify the superfluous texts (like having the entire Junon execution-up-til-Weapon-attack-episode in every Junon-file, the debug-thingies).

I have some manner of muley thingy - you should be able to find it there under the name of 'FF7PC Updated texts [SW].7z'. (Hey, open source!) 115 Mb or so. ed2k-link:
ed2k://|file|FF7PC.updated.texts.[SW].7z|121165063|A9AC714AA59EFEBE822D8F5569D639D6|/
Savvy young bucks like you lot should be able to make heads and tails of that.

Also, the internet-access-part is a funny li'l thing. I generally wake up early, but I think your only real chance to get the file from me that way is by being up somewhere between 5 and 9 AM GMT. Yup. It appears the speeds drop right around 8.30 regular, in fact.

If there are any other suggestions on where to upload this in a more accessible form, I'll go to work on those during the weekend. Possibly.

45
It happened to me - I think I got around it by setting XP compatibility mode to Win95.

46
Mass-rename? I don't know what that would do for me, but I've already got Loveless installed, actually. And I've been industriously de-engrishifying the whole thing for a few weeks now - working alphabetically, now down to s-something or other. And FF7 still works with the modified LGP... Of course, I haven't yet played to an area where I've made extensive updates, but that's a good start, at least.
Goals:
- It must make sense (Engrish to be removed)
- What I perceive as bloody silly must go (Buugen's 'Ho Ho Hooo's nearly eradicated, Hojo in Costa del Sol should be a tiny bit more mature)
- Points for style awarded if the item-names in the "Received item "x"!"-boxes match the kernel.bin-line-up

Current report from Loveless's Compare: "Different number of texts in each file." 8-) (I guess the parser has a fit over the couple of {NEW PAGE}es that I deleted.)

But, seriously, have anyone of you checked out just how much... well, massive quantity of art AND text, there is for Junon?? Beep me sideways, I tell you!
I also noticed that Loveless seems to have a memory-leak...

I also need some assistance with this (I bet I was here for the same reason x years ago...).

I've followed most links here, and though I haven't checked my progress very often (mom's laptop + XP = crashes(scary), yo), last I remember I had no success. I just started a new game to check up on some of these fabulous little mods (FF7Music, Phoenix Rejuvenation Project, and some other small patches). Now, the ff7.exe in question is straight out of the patch .zip and poked and prodded with cetra.
When I first unpacked FF7Music, it went straight into FF7's main directory (later moved to \ficedula). I have TWO different versions of FF7M: 1.10 and 1.51a. Never mind how the music is set up- lot's of spaces in the filenames, of course, but otherwise of doubtful relevance - but the older version had this handy log-window that reported FF7.exe as FOUND, but ff7music.dll as NOT FOUND. The newer version has no such output, and both simply don't work as I want them to. :x Kurses! ff7music.dll v. 1.1.1.0 is in the main (ff7.exe) directory, NOT in \ficedula. ficeconsole.dll v. 1.5.0(+) and the other one have copies BOTH in \ficedula AND 'Final Fantasy VII'. Though the .ini came with the older version of FF7Music, I have adjusted it to conform with the new parsing-wizardry (the first time I ran the new exe, it parsed the spaces as full stops... ouch!). If I have to do it over, I will hate any number of things... Bloody tedious...
Psst! (Filecount: 91)

Why the [insert Barret-tirade here] doesn't it work??

I basically approve of the suggested replacements, but I bet any replacement of Red XIII with a biped will be a problem ordinary people might not feel compelled to fully solve... Also, I whole-heartedly do not like KH (well, KH1 at least - KH2 was more alright-ish due to the beginning), so do not expect me to take it for a test-drive when it nears release.
(My opinions of KH are, of course, entirely unrelated to anything important here and now. If you feel you desperately must change my mind about it, do it through PM.)

I actually tried to do this myself a while ago, but with no success. It really didn't help that Cosmo didn't work as advertised for me, forcing me to manually decrypt the scenes (some wossname-utility someone else made, mind) and edit them with Notepad... But yeah, I'm interested, me.
