D'oh cyberpunk was what I was looking for with VII, not steampunk  ::)

Exactly right. Look at all of the systems and content from the games previous to VII and it doesn't take long before you see that VII has got all of these but nicely wrapped up in a graphics engine that was innovative for the time and made the game even more compelling to play. VII is a classic jRPG in every way. I think the thing that puts people off it more than anything is its lack of medieval fantasy setting in favour of a steampunk sort of style.

It's hard to find the turning point but I think there's actually been a steady decline since VII in one way or another. Not saying VII was the last great FF and the turning point but none of its successors have been as good due to various reasons. I didn't like the GF system in VIII, I appreciated the innovation but it just didn't gel with me and I also disliked the environment. IX while more "traditional", felt in some way empty. I don't know if by being "traditional" it ended up with less substance, I can't really explain it.

Then we get to X where things started to pick up. Loved the plot and the fantastic battle system, not so keen on the weapon system and the "world map" but there was more than enough stuff in the actual world to offset that. It was an overall good package but in many respects you could see worrying hints of the direction the series was going to take. X-2 deserves no mention. XII I thought was a good game in its own right despite a terribly weak plot. If it had been given a name other than FF (with the common FF aspects also replaced of course) then I think the FF purists might have rated it higher than what they do. By now though you can see that Squenix is really starting to mess and has moved completely away from what the old school of us perceive as a Final Fantasy game.

XIII I haven't played, I don't actually own a current gen console, but I don't even have a desire to play it. I have a true feeling that I'll never play a proper Final Fantasy game ever again, mainly because Squenix' idea of an FF game is completely different to our idea of one.

And that's the kinda review it takes to get me interested.
By turn-based strategy, do you mean along the lines of final fantasy tactics?

Yeah it's pretty much FFT with mechs. The skills system was expanded over time, 3 brings in new types of weaponry, 4 brings in a multi-attack ally link-up system and 5 is pretty much an all-round polish.

Evolved is a completely different game to the old ones and while I've not played it I've heard it's not great.

Yeah the FM series never had a big following but they were good turn-based strategy games in their own right. The graphics for FM3 are a bit ropey even by PS1 standards and the system a bit strange when compared to FM1 (snes), FM2 (Japan only PS1), FM4 and 5 (PS2) but it's still a decent game. FM4 wasn't well received but I thought it was really good.

Now then young man, you should go back 1 generation further to the PS1 and enjoy some of the great gameplay to be found on there. Front Mission 3, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Vandal Hearts, Star Ocean 2. Home of some true timeless classics.

PS1 copy bought on day of release, still in mint condition and locked away in a safe place. I also bought a platinum release copy so I could play it again without having to run the risk of doing any damage to the original  ::)

PC I managed to get a good condition 2nd hand copy from Forbidden Planet (2nd hand game shop, sells cool manga stuff and t-shirts for emos) for only £15, not long before the game became a real collector's item. I never really used it until now though, because modding it was pretty much unheard of at the time and I was pissed off with it thinking that the PC version would look better and run smoother than the PS1 version

I've been pretty lucky when it came to having games that become pretty rare and expensive. The only one that bit me was Star Ocean: The Second Story which I had to part with £60 for a 2nd hand copy due to the fact it had a very small PAL-UK print run.

Completely Unrelated / Re: dload ff7 pc for windows 7?

The standard PC version patched to v1.02 works fine for me on Windows 7 x64 (along with any additional mods from here I've applied). Finding a legitimate copy isn't easy after so long but a few are still out there. The best thing to do is check any 2nd hand high street retailers and sites like eBay and Amazon. It's difficult but not impossible.

As already mentioned, no support or assistance is given to piracy and that "piracy" also stretches to the distribution of any copyrighted content from Square. The mods distributed here are perfectly legal because they contain no copyrighted content from other Square games. This is why there are no mods here that contain ripped content from games like Crisis Core because that is Square's property and they have taken down sites before that host ripped content.

It's not just role-playing games but games in general which are lacking in creativity and originality. Your fps map design pic summed up the general state of things perfectly.

I pretty much agree with everything that DLPB has said apart from his opinion on XII. I think it's a fantastic game that was unfortunately strangled by a poor plot. But anyway.

I just don't understand the claims over the time needed to reproduce VII. 3-4 years for a brand new game yes. That includes designing and concept art from scratch, coming up with the plot and script etc from a blank page. VII doesn't need any of that. Heck, there's no need to change the kernel or any of the other systems. All of the non-cosmetic content is already there and so is all of the base work for the graphical content.

I dont think they need to make a sequel. I would much prefer a remade FFVII (no story changes, only graphical/sound).

This.

After all, what is the majority of this site dedicated to? Making VII more modern and better looking. One of the best things about VII is its traditional gameplay and mechanics. There's way too much desire to try all sorts of weird systems and I just don't like them.

People have been begging for a current-gen VII remake for at least a decade so they can't deny there hasn't been a demand for it. Instead we just get treated to disappointing new "Final Fantasy" labelled games and crap VII spin-offs.

Sure, Squenix might want to throw a big budget at a VII-2 but for a remake of VII I really don't see the requirement for a huge budget. If anything, a VII remake would be the ultimate cash cow for them but I sure as hell wouldn't complain if they did it.

It must have taken me close to 6 hours to do all of this modding manually but boy what a result. All the time was worth it and unlimited kudos to you for a flawless and idiot-proof guide. The clear instructions also served to help me understand what processes are needed when modding so I was able to add a few additional unmentionable changes to the game.

The only criticism I have, and it's really just nit-picking, is that I'm not keen on the Sailor Mars and Sailor Jupiter models but as I said above, because of the concise instructions I was able to change these myself. Such a mass of content and this is my only "complaint"? Just shows you what a true quality contribution the Bootleg Edit is.
