It's far cooler than the real thing, I'd argue.  Seeing as "the real thing" doesn't exist, except in the form of a few bytes coding for its model in the Dissidia rom :P

Because if you are going to make a cosplay sword out of metal, you might as well sharpen it into a real sword :P

also... the wooden one weighs about 4ish pounds... i'd wager you wouldnt be able to hold up a steel version.

If i ever had the chance to do a FF cosplay, i would go for Vincent. He's my favourite character, although he's somehow plain, since he's a secret/secondary char in FF7 :/
