Final Fantasy "like" games
« on: 2004-06-17 21:38:17 »
I am trying to find more games that are somewhat like Final Fantasy games. Please post what platform it is for too.
The few I know are ...

Breath of Fire 4 for PSX
Chrono Trigger for SNES
Secret of Mana for SNES

I know there are a bunch more for SNES and I am more interested in PSX/PS2/PC games because the graphics are a hell lot better.

havent Square Soft and Enix combined to make "Square Enix" ?

I am not saying write long lists just a few games that you can put on the same level as FF7 :)

I'm more interested in PC games though... they should release more of these types of game for PC because the gfx look so much better when you got aniso. filtering and anti aliasing on  :D

Enix is another rather specialized (or was, before they merged) company.

Yep, Squaresoft and Enix merged into SquareEnix.

You can list Chrono TRIGGER but not Chrono CROSS?!?!?!

£ main characters, 47 sub characters...and no, thats WASNT a typo, 47 people to have in your party (3 at any one time)

Ive just imported it from USA as its only released over there and am running it on an emulator and its damn good.  Cant find a program to rip and ISO though so i get better DTR's.....Any ideas people?

Digital Tape Recorders? :o

Nonono :P  Data transfer rates.  I find that laoding movies and changing areas/engaging in batlles has 1 second lags...sometimes movies are up to 5 seconds....

Thanks for the CloneCD idea, but ive already used my 15 day trial of it  -_-

You could just download the disc image from some P2P service. No harm done, since you have the original.

Anti-piracy organizations and some software licenses which prohibit even backups will certainly disagree with me, but I don't see how anyone (well, except SlySoft, possibly) would suffer from that.

The only PC games I know of that play like FF are....

Anachronox, I never saw the ending of this one....Couldn't figure out the final battle...then I lost my harddrive. You do have to level up all your party members....or the final battle will own you. That's probably the main reason why I couldn't beat it. And the game has a point-of-no-return...that I was stuck at, because of lack of saves. And Grandia II, if you can find it.

As for the PS2...
The closest match to FF10 would be Xenosaga (but with more talking, and more cutscenes....a lot more cutscenes...like, 75% more, with 25% being actual playing, or so it will seem for the first 15 hours.)
And Shadow Hearts....good game, but It feels better, if you've played Kouldelka, first. And I don' know about this one...I haven't played, it so I don't know how much like FF it is, but I may get it someday Suikoden3.

As for the PS1...pick one....but I like Xenogears out of all of them....Legend of Dragoon wasn't that bad and neither was Legend of Legaia or Valkery Profile. But all of these got repetitious, except for Xgears....the story was interesting enough to ignore the reputition, much like your FF games.

I just picked up a copy of Chrono Cross today. So I will start playing it soon. I am expecting a lot out of it because I have read a lot of good reviews..

I guess what separates FF games from others is the story. Even though fighting FF gets repetitive really fast, the story makes you want to keep playing, so that's what is "similar to FF" for me :)

Lufia 2 was awesome!
Lufia 1 was ok.

I particularly liked Tales of Phantasia for SNES.  It was only released in Japan, but DeJap did a translation.

I remember Planescape Torment.... I actually finished that one. It has multiple endings...kinda. But all the endings didn't make any since except for the one without the final battle....which is kinda wierd, if you think about it. A game without a final battle. You can only activate the good text, ending if you have a special dagger...and attempt to kill the main character with it....via. text.  Anyway it was the only ending that made any sense...or gave the ending movie a meaning, anyway.
