Releases / Re: [FF7PC-98/Steam] New Threat Mod (v2.0.9999)
« on: 2024-02-20 22:06:59 »
I'm playing New Threat 2.0 Combat Only with Echo-S. I had a random encounter with Shin Godo in the Corel Prison area while I had Yuffie and Barret in my party. I'm assuming this is a glitch as it looks like this is supposed to be the Yuffie endgame ultimate weapon fight.

Releases / Re: [FF7 PC]Wizard Staff: Modern Spell Names
« on: 2024-02-18 17:18:21 »
It looks like this thread hasn't been used in awhile. Is MSN integrated into another mod now such that I should not use the standalone MSN mod anymore?

When using MSN with New Threat on Steamdeck (installed with 7th Deck), I run into some problems, like Braver being renamed "B ver." When I run this on PC, I have no issues.

When using Wizard Staff with Echo-S, 7th Heaven "deactivates spell names" while keeping MSN activated (?). This functionally deactivates MSN since that's MSN's only function. From what I can tell MSN is supposed to work with Echo-S, so this seems off.

I'm working on trying to install this on Steam Deck with whatever UI mods can work along with it and I'm trying to rule-out what's an issue with 7th Heaven, what's an issue with other, and what's an issue with Steam Deck. I'll try installing on PC first. I'm wondering if folks could recommend some accompanying graphical mods.

I remember I couldn't figure this out when I played 1.5 back in 2020 and enjoyed with vanilla graphics, which was still fun, but thought I'd ask. Maybe another place is more appropriate to ask.

7th Heaven / Steam Controller Functionality
« on: 2020-04-21 21:09:41 »
I have not been able to find an answer to this question using the search function. Please let me know if the problem is answered elsewhere.

I have tried without success to get 7th Heaven/New threat to work with a steam controller.

Using the Game Launcher/Controls GUI, one preset (NoNumpad + Std Gamepad) seems to almost work. OK maps correctly, and I can move with the analog stick. However, Menu is not mapped correctly, so I am unable to open the menu unless I use the keyboard (right-shift). Changing the in-game controls does not seem to have any effect on the out of game controls (which I think is the intended function of GameLauncher, so that part makes sense, I guess). This does make it hard to troubleshoot re-mapping the keys, because I can't tell what the various keys on the steam controller are being auto-mapped to.

I am using all the default mods except for ProtomanZxAdvent's Mod Compilation, cmh175 avatars, cmh FMV pack, and ESUI Controller Addon (the latter because I am using Enhanced Stock). (Those mods didn't seem to work with New Threat.)

Thanks for any troubleshooting advice you can offer. :)

Maybe the subtitles would be more universally easy-to-read if there were black borders around the letters.

General Discussion / Re: It's FFIX's turn.

It is not necessary to skip FMVs if you just want Excalibur II; however, if you want to get Excalibur II while also not permanently missing anything and reaching the endgame with low-level characters so that you can level with fancy stat-boosting items, it becomes necessary.  I guess it's technically possible (I had about 10 minutes to spare IIRC, and maybe you can sneak a few more minutes with some lucky chocobo-hunting), but it sounds awful.

I think it's only advisable to do this on emulator where save state can be abused.

Here's the guide I used way back when: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197338-final-fantasy-ix/faqs/41181

I think "Squall's Dead" and "Rinoa==Ultimecia" make the story better.  I was bummed when Square explicitly ruled them out.

Aerith didn't rejoin after the funeral scene, and Cloud still commented on Sephiroth having killed her.

Is this normal behavior (e.g. does she rejoin later), or does this mean something is wrong?

I'm still not fully clear on whether or not to patch to 1.02 before running bootleg or if that is done automatically...  The version I have is 1.00 - should I patch beforehand?
My recollection is that the patch is implemented by Bootleg, but this should be clear from the files it has you download....

Try the "Easy Installation via Bootleg" thread in the FAQ section.  It should make this point clear.

Hi, I just installed FF7 using the bootleg patch and everything seemed to have installed great - no errors, and I can run the game and run around and fight.  My only issue is that the battles are a bit strange - when I am in the initial fight with the two soldiers I have two grey bars where my limit should be, both very close to the "Ex-Soldier" where my name is, and there is no blue background indicating the stats area.  I can see my current/max HP though, but the background for the whole right area is 100% transparent (non blue)  When it's my turn I can select fight/magic/item on the left side perfectly fine, but the right side it's just a mess.  Also, it won't let me start the game in full screen mode
I had this problem, too.  I think it arises because of Aali's 9999 limit breaker fix.  Try disabling that from the configuration and see if it fixes the problem.  Also, try pressing F5-F8 (I think those are the ones) to change the setting of the battle menu (i.e. during battle).

The limit breaker should still have been implemented through the Menu Overhaul mod if you selected the option back then.

Aali's custom driver is among the mods integrated with the Bootleg process, yes.

IMO, Vincent is higher-tier for his good stats and long-range weapons, but his limits are still kind of not so great.

I'm just before Jenova-LIFE, but I've decided to get Omnislash during Disc 1.  However, I've never done this before, and I can't get the Gil-GP guy to appear.

Was he removed from the Hardcore mod, does he only appear later, or am I just unlucky?  What's the most efficient way to get enough GP for Omnislash this early?

The Aeris Revival mod only check once to add Aeris back to the party.
If you've passed  the checkpoint, you'll have to use Black Chocobo to edit your save game and add Aeris back.
Using Aeris Revival with Hardcore results in Aeris missing from 3 scenes.  She normally would loiter around spouting a few lines of dialogue.
Also, the Retranslation is not completely compatible with Hardcore and Aeris Revival.
You'll lose the Retranslation on scenes altered by either mod.
The only major conflict is a few lines of dialogue.  Otherwise these mods work together.
Cool!  It looks like I can turn the Hardcore playthrough into an Hardcore+Aerith playthrough without missing too much, and then later I'll be able to get the full Retranslation experience (even if it isn't quite done yet).  I'm excited.

Time to grind out Great Gospel. ^^

I didn't take anything from that site apart from the replacement input file.  Other than maybe the FMV issue, I haven't experienced major problems so far apart from what appear to me known mod issues.

Pardon the double-post before.

***

I've been playing through on a Hardcore playthrough without Aerith revival with intent to follow-up with retranslation+Aerith revival once the next release is out.  However, it's my understanding that, much like the retranslation+Hardcore playthrough, a retranslation+Aerith playthrough are not fully compatible, so it might be better to play the retranslation without Aerith.

What would be the expected behavior if I loaded my current save from an Aerith revival+Hardcore Bootloader?  I'm just past Wutai, if that matters.

16
It might be ideal if there were a widescreen effect so that the subtitles could go within the black bar...it would get around the contrast issue...

17
I think having text boxes in different parts of the screen can be helpful when there's no voice-acting.  Similar to why comic books put text in boxes.

18
@ PitBrat -- Thanks for the clarification.  After I finish my Hardcore playthrough, I'll re-install everything with the new tools and do a Retranslated playthrough. :)

@ UG -- IIRC, the file I replaced manually after installation was this ff7input.cfg:

http://www.finalfantasy7pc.com/Files/ff7input.cfg

Which I found from this site

http://www.finalfantasy7pc.com/mods/aalis-custom-graphics-driver/

My use of the word "config" in that quote is a little misleading.

The laptop keyboard patch did work for me originally, but for some reason it "undid" itself when I opened the game for the 3rd or 4th time.  Then I replaced my ff7input.cfg file with that one, and it fixed the problem.  I have no idea what un-fixed the keyboard settings, but the game was 100% unresponsive to keyboard inputs that time.

I can still repost the version of the file I used if you want.

EDIT: I've shared the Bootleg information here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?ddprteye4t5t2a8

I should say that I noticed that I changed the Opening background from the picture of Cloud/Sephiroth to the original background, so I guess one change from default did take place.

Turning off fullscreen alone fixed the screenshot issue.  It looks like the fullscreen underlay causes the problem.

Here's what plays when Cloud tries to walk into the quicksand around Gold Saucer on foot:

The same thing happens when I'm shown, for example, how to navigate the world map, etc.

Wow, that youtube video is impressive.  It looks very professional.  I'm blown away.

Using the Bootleg default install, I haven't noticed any major FMV changes other than retranslation (which I noticed in the Niblheim flashback).  Is this normal, or should the FMVs be noticeably improved?  I just chose all the default options.

Maybe make the last clause (kono mentsu) more reflective of concern than of holding him back, since the intended message (if Asa is correct) is that Aerith and Red XIII are first and foremost people Barrett wants to protect rather than fellow fighters.  The interpretation makes you wonder if the elevator boss was added late in development.

"Sh*t!  We're completely surrounded.  On my own, this'd be nothin'... but these guys...wonder if they'd make it...?"

EDIT: I did a quick search for the Mahjong term.  This is what it appears to mean specifically in that context, which is pretty clearly where the metaphor is drawn from (http://www.osamuko.com/2009/04/03/big-list-of-japanese-mahjong-terminology/):

mentsu -- meld -- [the term used here] "meld" comes from [the Western card game] rummy

A "meld" is when you have, say, 3 5s and may play them to earn points.  I'd never known the formal English term.  So the metaphor may be that the pair [Aerith/Red XIII] share a certain characteristic [needing protection].  It might make the gaming metaphor is little clearer, if it wasn't before.

I don't know if there's a way to work in a gaming metaphor without making the tone seem weird in English (this is probably a pretty casual expression in Japanese, but in English the equivalents will make him sound like Setzer), but it may be worth thinking about.

22
I'm pretty sure I understand him.  I'll elaborate.  It's all based on that last line.

It looks like Asa's emphasizing that the people with Barrett are Aerith and Red XIII.  Barrett only knows Aerith as someone who was captured (one boss fight aside).  He only knows Red XIII, similarly, as someone who had been captured before he helped him escape (i.e. by shooting the container he was in).  Tifa and Cloud, whose skills he trusts, are still elsewhere.

So, Asa interprets mentsu to mean "group" (which, as I've gathered, is in this context really a gaming metaphor being something like English "being dealt this hand"?) and he gives the context for why Barrett would appear to speak disparagingly (but not really) of his companions.  He still sees them as people who require saving/protection/sheltering from Shinra (not that he begrudges them that -- after all, past Barrett quotes have emphasized how much he feels he owes Aerith).

Side-Issue: Was a new version released?  I thought I saw that a new version was coming (005?), but I don't know if it was ever posted.  I get confused because there are something like 3 threads that all feature updates about this umbrella project....

This is kind of a really dumb question, possibly, but I've noticed that taking screenshots while playing FFVII just leads a black box to be saved (possibly the underlay?).  So, umm.  Is there a way around that?[/list]

24
I should mention, I've noticed that any World Map text doesn't work quite right.  It just kinda scales vertically along the left-hand side of the screen.

Also, the Chocobo races (not to mention the bike minigame, but that's over and done) are FAAAST, but I actually like the new speed.  They used to be so tedious. ^^

@Iecerint
Can't you just switch with cloud? I mean, equip something else with cloud then equip the silver one on barret. Or, if you're stuck, you can use a save editor to switch their equipments.
I sold all my excess armor getting gil for a lifetime Gold Saucer pass.

I have a save I can go back to, but it's before I grinded out some limits.  It's not a big deal.

Maybe Bronze Bangles or something could be added to the bar's item list to get around this issue, if you perceive it to be one.
