I learned C++ before Java, too.
Well, actually I didn't learn Java, but at university, I'm forced to use it :(

Currently, I'm programming the Simplex-Algorithm in Java.

I remember one of our professors at university saying:
"Java is better than C++. Java is easier than C++. And Java does not use pointers and dangerous things like that..."

When I was debugging my simplex implementation, Java came up with this:

Funny, isn't it?  :-P

Archive / Re: 3ds to .p conversion
« on: 2006-05-16 20:22:03 »
We will be able to create new .p files from scratch.
Most of the format is decoded, it will be a bit tricky, but it should not be too hard to write a tool or plugin that can do that.

Unfortunately, I'm extremely busy at university right now, so I don't have the time to take care of that right now...
And there are still sooo many file formats that wait to get decoded... :|

The game I'm personally looking forward to is Metroid Prime 3.
BioShock sounds interesting, too, however, I doubt that I will ever buy a XBox360...

After countless of conversations with countless of people I decided to choose a programming language myself.
So, and which language is that?
That's the most important info that is missing in your post if you want that people can help you.

Quote from: chaoscontrol
- What language do you know, do you like it? why did you choose it? etc...
I know 3 languages: Visual Basic, C/C++ and Java.
QBasic was the one I started to learn first. It was easy, but extremely limited...

After that, I switched to Visual Basic. It was nice to start with windows programming, however, when programming Ultima, I realized that the language is far too limited for such big projects which I wanted to create.

That was the reason why I started programming in C/C++. It gives you the ultimate programming power - there are (almost) no limitations in what can be done with C/C++.
However, it is definately not a language for beginners. There are a lot of traps in C/C++, especially when working with pointers and things like that, so you really need to know that exactly you are doing.
The first thing I did when starting with C/C++ is: I bought a "C/C++ for Beginners" book from Microsoftâ„¢.

As for Java, I can use that language a bit. I personally hate it.
Java seems like a castrated version of C/C++ to me - mostly like C/C++ but without pointers  :-(

As for a general advise:
I would start learning a more basic and easy programming language (as Python), and later, when you have understood the basics of programming, try to learn another more complex language as C/C++...

I think it's easier to switch from an easy language to a more comlpex one than directly starting with a complex language...

Well, Cadd, I'm sure you have been thinking a while before posting this decision.

Although I'm not happy seeing one of our old members leaving, I still respect your decision.

Good luck with your current and future projects.

I'm sure we'll meet again some day.

I have been sitting for about 20 minutes in front of my monitor and was thinking if I should close it or not.

I did not close it because the discussion was off-topic, I closed it because I had a bad feeling about what posts would come next if I had left it open.
And that's exactly the reason why I did not split the topic - the discussion would have gone on in another topic.

On the other hand, I could've splitted the argument to a new topic and close that one... sorry, didn't think of that.

Quote from: Jari
Did that make you feel good? Flexing those big moderator muscles?

No, it didn't. Hitting those mod buttons is like being a cop and giving someone a ticket for driving too fast - it makes me feel like the most unliked man in the world.

Quote from: Jari
I mean... smart moderator might have found the split topic-button, or something, but it wouldn't feel so good because you couldn't show off your powers, right?

See paragraph #2.

Quote from: Jari
They were probably mean to you in the army, ordered you to do all kinds of stuff (...)

Yes, that's the way it was. Unfortunately.

Quote from: Jari
(...) and now you take it out on other people?

No.
I did not close it to demonstrate my "power" or to be mean to someone, I just tried to do what is one of a moderator's jobs:
Making sure that the members do not start smashing each other's heads.

I didn't close the topic because of your answer, Jari.
The reason was the first line in the next reply. And please do not tell me you didn't see the sarkasm in it...

So, if there is interest in having the "original" Post-Your-Desktops-Topic back alive, I can cut the off-topic argument out and re-open it, although I know that this is not what Jari is trying to achieve with this topic.

PS. I wonder why eyes appear red in photos, because at least my dog's eyes used to look bright green if you pointed a flashlight at it.

Although I do not know much about photography, I think that the environment (where the dog, cat, girl or whatever is) has to be dark.
When you trigger the flashlight using a photo camera, the iris does not react quick enough to close the pupil, and then the color of the inner side of the eye gets reflected, which is red...

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / Introducing Q-Gears
« on: 2006-04-18 23:24:37 »
Well, I personally have to say that I don't like the idea of having a "new" engine open source... Qhimm already mentioned one reason in his last paragraph.

Secondly:
Quote from: Qhimm
(...) people are already asking "what kind of custom data will we be able to put into the game?".

When the project is open-source, then it won't be any problem for a skilled programmer to implement functions what will load custom data.

Thirdly:
We have a big "We do not support pirated copies of ..." written in our forum FAQ.
FF7 is copy protected (even if not very well), so what about the free engine? It would be also able to play pirated content, at least if it's open source.
A simple Seek-And-Destroy job on the source code would disable any copy protection routines we would implement...

As for my personal opinion:
I have been waiting months for someone to start this project.
(I cannot start a project like this, I'm simply not skilled enough to write a whole game engine :erm: )
But: We should keep it closed-source.

 - Alhexx

 - edit -
Since we're already talking about legality here, I have one question:

If an engine is able to run custom content, too, is it then "more illegal" than an engine that runs only the original game content?

If yes, then why?

Archive / But what about ff8?
« on: 2006-04-12 09:11:14 »
Well, the main problems with FF8 are:

1. There's not that much interest in modding FF8, since it's simply not that popular and most people want to see FF7 get modded.

2. Most of the FF8 file formats have not been hacked yet. We have been working on the FF7 formats for over 5 years now, and as EmperorSteele wrote, the real modding began about one (or a half) year ago...

Scripting and Reverse Engineering / Does FF7 use OpenGL?
« on: 2006-04-03 22:00:31 »
As far as I know, FF7 does run only on D3D.
However, in Version 1.02 they planned to run the engine under OpenGL, too.
The opengl renderer seems to be implemented, however, it was never used.

Posting a topic like "I need someone to help me" usually does not succeed.
Your post sounds a bit like you need someone to do the dirty work for you.
If you really want that someone helps you, you'll need to be a bit more polite, I think.

I wasn't implying I was being the typical jerk that rips off Squaresoft, I DO FULLY OWN the CD, on BOTH platforms, and only mentioned it so that anyone who would try to help me out would know how far patched my version is to help out any confusion incase there was a possible way noted in any version.

We generally do not give any support for the Ultima version, since it is a) illegal and b) it has not only the offical patches applied, but also cracks.
Nobody really knows what patches or cracks have been applied to the Ultima version, so that's another reason why we do not support it.

You should put this search into google - maybe you'll find any tools like this.

A bit more information would be helpful:

When exactly does it crash?
Does it display any dialog boxes?
etc...
